BSc Oil, Gas and Energy Management Introduction The rate of exploration and development of the world s energy resources is increasing rapidly. This course is designed to help prepare you for a successful career in the international energy industry, specialising in the oil and gas sector. Why choose this course? This course will teach you about the processes, threats and opportunities that underpin the successful management of the international energy sector in the 21st century. You will have the opportunity to develop the skills required to support a range of exciting careers with national and multi-national energy companies, consultancies, energy ministries, investment banks and international energy agencies. By choosing this course you will benefit from student membership of the Energy Institute (EI), the leading professional body for the international energy industry. What will I study? In your first year of study you will examine sources of oil and gas and patterns of their consumption in a globalising world. You will be introduced to methods of electricity and power production and better understand the economic and business environment. Your second year provides you with opportunities to analyse petroleum technologies and compare hydrocarbon, nuclear and renewable sources of energy. By coupling this knowledge to an understanding of global economic issues, and an ability to identify hazards and assess risk, you will be able to evaluate energy policy. You will then have the opportunity to supplement these skills with those necessary to secure and succeed on an industrial work placement. As a final year student you will explore major issues in energy markets, climate change and carbon management and investigate an issue of your choice in a research project. You will have the opportunity to gain professional accreditation in health and safety and participate in the activities of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. In all three years of the course significant opportunities exist for you to enhance your employment prospects. Specialist modules focus on developing your career skills, giving practical guidance on career opportunities, job applications and interviewing techniques. You will also benefit from visits to organisations such as the EI and an annual programme of experience talks in which former graduates (and other professionals currently working in the industry) discuss their careers since leaving university.

MA International Relations Oil and Gas Security Route Introduction Access to secure sources of energy is a vital requirement for governments and ensuring that access is a key goal for policy formulators. How governments secure access to oil and gas, using both the diplomacy of soft power and the coercion of hard power, is a core issue in contemporary international relations. At the same time, the size and transnational reach of the major companies involved in oil and gas exploitation poses questions about the relevance of the state in the current international system. The oil and gas security route examines the theoretical concerns of international relations in the context of the practical realities of the oil and gas sector, in the areas of geo-political competition, environmental impact and the future of the industry. Why choose this course? The course has been designed to enable newcomers to engage readily with the subject, whilst offering those who already have a background in international relations an opportunity to deepen their exploration of its scope and complexities. What will I study? The route includes the following mandatory and optional modules. Mandatory Modules Theories in International Relations Impacts of Oil in the Developing World The Future of Oil and Gas Optional Modules Governance for Security in the Developing World Post-Colonial African Politics International Terrorism Diplomacy in the International System Foreign and Security Policy Formulation (field trip) Community Action (work experience) How will this course improve my career prospects? The oil and gas security route provides an explicit and detailed understanding of a crucial component of the current international system, marrying analysis of the issues and debates within the sector to the strategies and mechanisms employed to address these questions. The route is designed to help equip you for employment in the public and private sectors, with the potential to work for national and multi-national energy companies, energy ministries and inter-governmental and nongovernmental organisations.

MSc Oil and Gas Engineering Introduction The oil and gas industry is continuously developing and is therefore both recognised and expected to remain as a major contributor to the economy of many developed and developing regions as it continues to be driven not only by new oil and gas discoveries, but by a constant demand to find newer, safer, more efficient and cost-effective ways of extracting resources. Whilst exploration continues to globally identify major oil and gas finds, these are increasingly less accessible and require complex engineering solutions to deliver effective operations and supply. Additionally, the significant and rising operating costs of existing installations is driving the sector to seek suitably qualified engineers who are able to support operations and initiate improvements within the four main strands of oil and gas facilities: offshore, onshore, sub-sea and pipelines. This course aims to equip you with sectorspecific oil and gas engineering, technology and operational skills to succeed in this competitive environment. It will provide you with specialist education in oil and gas engineering and equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required by the industry to solve and manage oil and gas engineering problems and complexities and to optimise existing processes to deliver increased efficiencies. Why choose this course? The global nature of the industry offers significant scope for graduates to have an incredibly varied career spanning international borders. This course is designed to allow you to develop the knowledge and skills for a wide range of professional opportunities in national and multinational oil and gas companies and consultancies. What will I study? A wide range of subjects is available, giving you a multidisciplinary approach to oil and gas engineering. Modules: Durability, Reliability and Sustainability Engineering Materials for the Oil and Gas Sector Fluid Flow Systems including Distribution and Transmission Control Systems and Instrumentation for the Oil and Gas Industry Petroleum Processing and Gas Technologies Drilling and Production Technology Health, Safety and Environmental Management in the Oil and Gas Industry Project Management Study Skills and Research Methods Research or Industry Sponsored Project How will this course improve my career prospects? Throughout the course you will find yourself working on current industry-based problems, providing you with the opportunity to gain additional skills and experience. The course will keep you up to date with current events and the latest, leading-edge industry thinking through opportunities to visit facilities and hear from leading industry figures. These visits are a great way to network with potential employers.
