HUNGARY - BUDAPEST Located at around 200 m above sea level, Hungary is a state of 93 thousand Km² situated in Central Europe. The region is referred to as the Carpathian Basin. North to South it is 268km and East to West, it is 528km. The terrain consists flat land plains to the East and smaller mountains to the West. Kékes Tetô being the highest point with 1014m in height. The main rivers are the Danube and the Tisza, both are considered large and are conducive to ship and boat travel. The largest lake of Europe is also found here called Balaton, is 78 Km long and 14 km at its widest point, covering an area of 592 Km² and is referred to by Hungarians as the "sea of Hungary". It is a summer paradise for sailing, fishing and swimming with its silky sky blue waters. Budapest, the capital of Hungary is situated along the Danube. The river divides the city into two parts. The hilly Buda, is located along the right bank of the Danube, while the flat left side is called Pest. Budapest is populated with approximately 1.9 million people. Roughly one fifth of the country's population. More information about Budapest, Hungary is available at: www.budapest.com and www.hungary.com FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE The faculty has an uninterrupted teaching record for more than two centuries (since 1787), making it thus one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world. The Faculty of Veterinary Science Szent István University Budapest is the only veterinary school in Hungary. It is a state institution supervised and financed by the Ministry of Education (with the co-sponsorship of the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development), and is accredited to issue the diplomas of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M), Master of Science (M.Sc.) in applied zoology and the postgraduate degree of Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D) in veterinary sciences. Postgraduate education is also organized by the Faculty for the veterinarians on several fields of the veterinary praxis meeting the demands of the colleagues wishing to specialise themselves in a certain animal species (horse, cattle, poultry, pet animals etc.) or in a specific field of veterinary praxis (microbiologist, toxicologist, veterinary legislation expert etc.). Besides the graduate and postgraduate education, internationally highly estimated research work on practically each field of veterinary work is run by the academic stuff of the Faculty, mostly in cooperation with the support of different national and international grants. Keeping the 3

demands of international integration and joining the European education and research community in mind, since 1989, in addition to a yearly enrolment of about 100 Hungarian students, international students have been continuously enrolled in the school. A full veterinary program has been instituted and is offered in English with the pre-clinical section also in German. Currently about 450 international students from all over the world are studying veterinary medicine in Budapest. In 2001 a new Large Animal Clinic was opened in an ideal rural environment of the University Field Station area, 30 km from the city. The historical campus remained the centre with the Office of the Dean, the Basic Science Departments and the new Small Animal Clinic opened in 2006, while the new Large Animal Clinic will gradually develop into a centre for farm animal and equine practices. Both sites are equally equipped with up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic facilities and will provide increased opportunities for teaching, practical training, and research. In the meantime, the entire Hungarian higher education system has undergone a reorganization: the formerly autonomous smaller institutions have been united into large multifaculty universities. Owing to this integration process, the veterinary school is now part of the Szent István University as the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest. OFFICE FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS The Office for International Relations Office is responsible for all students coming in the framework of the different scholarship programs or bilateral agreements. Here you can get more information about studying at the Faculty of Veterinary Science and also about leisure activities, and useful tips. At the first visit, students are asked to come to the office in order to get an information package. Our office is situated in building H. 2 nd floor, room 201. IMPORTANT! Attendance at lectures required The Faculty Council decided to change the Academic Rules relevant to the attendance at lectures. This change has been approved by a unanimous vote of the Council which included also the representatives of international students. Accordingly, the former free attendance has been changed to a required attendance following international trends derived from the credit system. Credits are given on the basis of workload to which lectures also belong. The opinion of the Council was that the codification of free attendance is no longer compatible with the new version of the Hungarian Higher Education Act whose 2004 version omitted the paragraph on voluntary attendance. The Council left for the Departments the way and degree of control. The number of missed lectures is limited to three. Certificates of parallel study related activities will be accepted on the formula which can be downloaded from the following link: www.univet.hu/english/education/attendance.pdf or can be obtained at the Office of Internal Relations. In case of more than three unexcused absences from a subject, its semester will not be accepted. GRADING SYSTEM In the Hungarian grading system the best grade is 5 (excellent), the lowest grade is 1 (fail). ECTS grades at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Szent István University. Equivalent ECTS Grades 5 Excellent A Excellent 4 Very Good B Very Good 3 Good C Good 2 Sufficient D/E Sufficient 1 Fail FX/F Fail LANGUAGE COURSES Although most of the guest students join the English programme of the Faculty and study all subjects in English, you may consider learning some basics in Hungarian as well. Amongst the language courses offered by the Department of Foreign Languages (building N) one of the most popular is: Hungarian as a foreign language. Students can join the course at four level: elementary, lower- intermediate, intermediate and advanced. Due to the high number of foreign students studying at 9

our Faculty and the places are limited, guest students are recommended to enrol to the course right at the beginning of the semesters. Enrolment is taken place at the Department of Foreign Languages. For more info please visit: www.univet.hu/english/units/languages/ Many language schools and foreign cultural institutes also organise Hungarian language course for foreigners and also EILC (Erasmus Intensive Language Courses) are offered in Hungary. For more detailed information on how to apply for a EILC course please visit the following website: http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/index_en.html or ask for more information at the Erasmus Office of your University. 10

CULTURAL FACILITIES There is a huge range of cultural entertainment to choose from in Budapest. There are theatrical performances and concerts of classical and light music every day, with both Hungarian artists and guests from all over the world. Grand opera and ballet are staged at both the Opera House and the Erkel Theatre, whereas the Operetta Theatre is the place to see and hear the operettas and musicals. Foreign language productions, mostly English, are put on at the Merlin Theatre. 15

Vibrant folk music and dancing shows are regularly held at the Buda Vigadó and Duna Palota Theatres. The Budapest Spring Festival and the Budapest Autumn Festival are two major international music, theatre, film and art festivals. www.festivalcity.hu In June beside the Festival of Music, the Bridge Festival and the events of the Danube Water Carnival take place. In August one of the most inevitable locations of the cultural and music life of Europe is found in the green island of Óbuda. The one week long festival is called Sziget fesztival (Island Festival) and was first organized in 1993. It is very popular amongst students and young adults and year by year more and more people come to the festival also from Europe and other corners of the world. Sziget is not only a festival, but a week-long opportunity to camp out in the temporarily built festival city on a gorgeous island where besides basic facilities posting and banking services, restaurants, pubs, shops and a number of other amenities provide comfort and entertainment. www.sziget.hu From the programme of the numerous cinemas found in the city you can easily choose your preferred movie with the help of the following website: www.budapestsun.com Last, but not least we have to mention some important cultural events at the Faculty. Probably the most formal from these events is the Stork-Ball organised in each November for the newly enrolled students called in local slang a stork. Another important series of events takes place usually in the springtime. It is called Equus Days with lots of fun and programmes like sport matches, carnival, parties and the so called International Day when foreign students can bring their culture a bit closer to us and present a little bit the country where they from. Another popular party is the Equus club taken place every Thursday in the Students Club in the campus in the organisation of the Students Organization.
