Overview This is the second international symposium by ASTM on Exterior Insulation Finish Systems (EIFS). The first symposium was held in Washington, DC on 21-24 Sept. 1992. It concentrated on the development, use, and performance of EIFS. This symposium is similar but concentrates on the materials, properties, and performance of EIFS. The concern about the longevity of EIFS continues as usage increases and EIFS becomes more popular. Some walls failures have occurred from wind and water damage. Designers and engineers need more information about material properties and physical behavior to help design and build longer lasting wall claddings. Some of the views presented in this STP recommend change, others seek improvements and refinement of the existing concepts used with EIFS. All this information is beneficial to increase knowledge and promote future discussions about EIFS. Currently task groups in ASTM Subcommittee E6.58 are working on developing standards for EIFS.
