Why is Area Increasing? 1. Economic returns are better in frontier regions than in traditional areas. 2. Soybean yields are more stable in frontier regions. Rains are more consistent in frontier. 3. Land is available. Land is less expensive in MaPiTo than in Center-West. What is Preventing Brazil from Even More Expansion? Roads are poorly maintained and treacherous during rainy season. There is not enough grain storage in Mato Grosso for their large crops.

Chinese Grain Production Expected to Be Unable to Meet Growing Demand 21 percent of the world s population 9 percent of the world s supply of arable land 6 percent of the world s freshwater resources 11 persons to feed per hectare of arable land, more than twice the world average of 4.4 Nearly 20 percent of China s arable land is polluted. 3 percent moderately or seriously polluted 8.2 million acres arable land unsuitable for agriculture (337 million acres total arable land)
