PHIL-MONT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY SUMMER AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES NEWSLETTER 2015 This newsletter contains information for summer recreational, volunteer or academic coursework based on material that has been sent to my office. I have included basic information, websites, phone numbers or addresses of the various opportunities so you can obtain more information or applications. Please go online and search out other summer programs at various colleges or camps that might be of interest to your son or daughter. The programs listed here are only the tip of the iceberg. Many, many colleges offer summer courses for high school students and some even allow high school students to take regular college courses. Go to the website of any college you may be interested in. There are several opportunities for elementary and middle school students, so check for the age group of each. I know summer seems far away but many of these programs have early deadlines so you might want to search your research now. ~ Mrs. Furcola THE NEW ENGLAND CENTER FOR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING, based at Boston University's College of Communication, is offering an Investigative Journalism Workshop for high school students in grades 9-12 in July 2015. The program gives participants hands-on and academic training in investigative reporting and the chance to work on investigative stories that could be published in school newspapers or in major media outlets in New England. Stuents participate in investigative reporting workshops led by university faculty, as well as award-winning local and national journalists. Go to http://studentprograms.necir.org/broadcast-journalism-workshop. KIDS COLLEGE AT PENN STATE in Abington is for elementary age and secondary students. There are camps for science, math, physics, sports, political science, robotics, computers, art and culture, film and television, business and much, much more. There are various classes within each category. The website is http://www.abington.psu.edu/youthteen. BOSTON UNIVERSITY is holding various summer programs both for credit or non-credit. Most are for juniors and seniors but there are several offered to freshmen and sophomores. For information go to: www.bu.edu/summer/highschool. JEFFERSON LAB HIGH SCHOOL HONORS PROGRAM is designed for high school students who have completed at least 2 years of science and have a good academic standing (3.3 GPA or above) and sincere interest in science. The program runs from June 22 to July 31. Visit the website: http://education.jlab.org/hsapplication/index.html. GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF CONTINUING STUDIES offers several summer programs for high school students. Freshmen, sophomores or juniors with a passionate interest in politics and current events may want to attend the JUNIOR STATESMEN SUMMER SCHOOL at Georgetown, Princeton, UVA or Stanford. The program is rigorous and admission is highly competitive. Go to www.jsa.org. SKYHAWKS Sports Programs for Kids is seeking students to work at their sports clinics this summer coaching soccer, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, tennis, flag football and roller hockey. This organization has

been providing these clinics in conjunction with non-profit organizations for over 20 years. Visit the website at http://www.skyhawks.com. Learn filmmaking at THE NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY'S FILM & ACTING CAMP. The academy offers summer workshops for students ages 14-17 and a tween program for ages 10-13 who have little or no previous filmmaking, acting, or animation experience. They are intensive, short-term courses that fully immerse students in the craft of writing, directing, casting, shooting, acting in, editing, and animating their own films. SUMMER FUN CLASSES - Students currently in 7 th, 8 th, and 9 th grades can apply to the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology in Willow Grove for a great summer experience. Eastern is offering classes in the following: Auto Mechanics and Collision Repair Junior Chef Crime Scene Investigation Fun with Fashion Computer Art/Digital Photography World of Construction Drawing and Painting Looking Good Pastry Boss Video Game Programming There is usually a waiting list well before the application deadline, so if you are interested, register immediately. MARYLAND INSTITUTE COLLEGE OF ARTS hosts a Summer Pre-College Studio Residency Programs for artistically inclined students to experience firsthand the challenges and excitement of an intensive college-level art program in a broad range of subjects as well as programs for students in grades 1-8.Go to: http://www.mica.edu/programs_of_study/programs_for_children_and_teens.html UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAM offers Saturday school for grades 1-8 as well as for high school students. There is a Summer Institute for high school students. Go to www.uarts.edu/precollege to see what is being offered. CORNELL SUMMER COLLEGE is a comprehensive academic summer program for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students get to experience all the opportunities and challenges of college life. There are academic, social and cultural activities in three and six-week sessions. Students take courses for college credit like art, writing and veterinary science and do some career exploration. The courses are too many to list, so please go to the website at www.summercollege.cornell.edu. THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND DEMOCRACY, a joint project of William and Mary College and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, is offering two pre-collegiate programs in early American history for juniors and seniors. THE SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR THE GIFTED has residential (ages 9-17) or day programs (ages 5-12) for highly qualified, academically talented students. The program has many of the elements of a summer camp with academic, cultural and instructional recreation. The Pennsylvania institutes are at Bryn Mawr College, but there are many others across the United States. The website is www.giftedstudy.com. PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER @ BROWN is a program in which students in grades 6-12 can experience all facets of life on an Ivy League campus. They take college courses, explore Boston, Providence and Newport, attend social events, play sports, and much more. OXFORD ADVANCED STUDIES PROGRAM is for students ages 16-19 who have good academic standing. The program takes place at Oxford and Cambridge University Colleges. Check the website at http://www.oasp.ac.uk/summerprogram. CARSON SIMPSON FARM CHRISTIAN CENTER offers camping experience as well as paid and volunteer positions for students. Check them on the web at www.csfarm.org. NEW YORK UNIVERSITY S Precollege Summer Programs offer great opportunities for rising high school juniors and seniors. The program is six weeks (7/5 8/14). Earn college credit while experiencing life in New York with other precollege students. Visit the website at www.nyu.edu/precollege. MONTGOMERY COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE offers PSAT and SAT Preparation and Driver Education Classes (30-hour classroom component). For information call 215-641-6397. These courses are held at the Blue Bell campus at 340 DeKalb Pike. SUMMER STUDY PROGRAM at PENN STATE is a six-week pre-college experience in which students can earn college credits at the University Park campus. Afternoons focus on enrichment, SAT prep, community service, sports and social events. Enrollment is limited; apply early. The website is www.summerstudy.com. Three other programs that come under the same heading are University of Colorado at, Fordham University, and the Sorbonne in France. TEMPLE UNIVERSITY in Ambler offers an SAT Review Workshop. Go to www.temple.edu/ambler or call 267-468-8500. TEMPLE UNIVERSITY - Summer Education Camps at Temple University Ambler and Fort Washington this summer. Summer 2015 marks the 23rd consecutive year that Temple University Ambler has offered summer camps. Camps are available for kids, tweens and teens between the ages of 8 and 17. They provide a wonderful opportunity for youths to learn about a specific area of interest, experience a college campus and have lots of fun at the same time. TEMPLE UNIVERSITY also offers WOMEN S ENGINEERING EXPLORATION to introduce students to the world of engineering (mechanical, electrical, environmental, civil and biomechanical) and robotics. The TYLER PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAM is for high school art students, grades 9-12. Offerings are; Portfolio Bootcamp, Artstart and Digistart, In Production: Film and Video Workshop, Architecture Institute, Pre-college Summer Workshop, Weekend Workshops, Junior Art Workshop (for students entering 8 th or 9 th grade). CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY has various summer pre-college programs for students who will be juniors or seniors next year. The programs are in architecture, art, design, drama, music, National High School Game Academy plus an Advanced Placement/Early Action course. The website is: www.cmu.edu/enrollment/pre-college. HARVARD UNIVERSITY offers an eight week or 2 four week summer school programs for seniors, juniors and sophomores. For detailed information: http://www.summer.harvard.edu/.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS in Scotland offers either Scottish Studies or creative writing. Students entering 11 th, 12 th grade go to http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/study/nondegree/summer/programmes for more information. THE WASHINGTON WORKSHOPS FOUNDATION presents the Student Leadership Seminars for students who have demonstrated academic achievement and potential as well as extra-curricular activities, work and community service. THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA offers Penn Summer High School Programs and The Young Scholars Program for academically gifted students. From its historic Young Artists Workshop to its innovative Summer Art & Design Institute for High School Women, MOORE COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN offers a full range of educational programs for boys and girls grades 1 12. Moore s programs are centrally located in the heart of the cultural community in Center City Philadelphia. If you go to the website you can read about the various offerings. SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY S Summer College offers two week art studios and many exciting programs that offer college-level, college credit courses. For further information go to summercollege.syr.edu. Hands-on technology camps, id TECH CAMPS, with weeklong day and overnight summer technology programs, are being held at several universities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Students learn to create 2D and 3D video games, build robots, design websites film and edit movies, create comic books, learn programming and more. The camps are for students 7-18 years old. Go to www.internaldrive.com to learn more. DREXEL S summer academic programs are open to highly motivated high school students who wish to explore what a university-level program is all about. Workshops are led by Drexel faculty and utilize Drexel's labs, facilities, and the city of Philadelphia's many resources. Drexel's 2015 Summer Institute Programs are offered through the LeBow College of Business, the College of Engineering, the Earl Mack School of Law, the Westphal College of Media and Design, and the College of Medicine. OXBRIDGE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS offers The Oxford Prep Experience or The Cambridge Prep Experience for students in grades 8 and 9 and The Oxford Tradition or The Cambridge Tradition for grades 10-12. Senior high students can also attend classes in Paris, Spain or France. There are over 65 courses to choose from. Check the website at http://www.oxbridgeprograms.com/index.php for more details. THE PENNSYLVANIA FREE ENTERPRISE WEEK is a summer program for current sophomores or juniors interested in learning more about the free enterprise system and opening their own business. The program is held at Lycoming College in PA. There are four different weeks to choose from. Each student accepted into the program will receive a scholarship to attend and the only fee is a nonrefundable $285.00 registration fee. To learn more go to www.pfew.org. The final deadline has been extended (but not for long on a first-come, first-served basis).

THE SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM at PACE UNIVERSITY in New York is for exceptional current sophomores and juniors from July 12th to July 25th. The website will provide more information: http://www.pace.edu/summer-scholars ACE (ADVANCED COLLEGE EXPERIENCE) at Community College of Philadelphia offers inexpensive courses with transferable college credits. The program is for students going into 10 th, 11 th, or 12 th grades, Go http://www.ccp.edu/search/site/ace / or call 215-751-8310. Offerings are Acting, Environmental Science, Introduction to Architecture, Automotive Technology, Intro to Business, Intro to Computer Graphics, Intro to Geographic Information Systems, Intro to Hospitality Industry, Intro to Human Geography, Intro to Law, Intro to Japanese or Spanish, Intro to Leadership Studies, Intro to Music technology, Intro to Video Game and Simulation Development, Intro to Network Production, Psychology, Science, Technology and Society, Survey of Justice, or Introduction to Video Production. SPRUCE LAKE WILDERNESS CAMP in Canadensis, PA, uses wilderness adventures to point young people to Christ. Go http://www.sprucelake.org/youth-camps/summer-camp to see the many offerings available. There are camps for students from 7 through 18. In WELCOME TO SUMMER COLLEGE, Ithaca's residential pre-college summer program, high school students experience college life and college-level courses while living in a safe environment. The College has two program offerings, each with many interesting courses designed and reserved expressly for precollege students. The website is http://www.ithaca.edu/gps/summer_college. The CURIE ACADEMY is a one-week summer residential program for high school girls who excel in math and science. The focus is to give sophomores and juniors a chance to learn more about engineering in an interactive atmosphere. Cornell University's faculty and graduate students will lead CURIE participants in classes, lab sessions, and project research. Social events, panel discussions, and other out-of-classroom activities will provide participants with opportunities to network informally with Cornell faculty, staff, and students. Its mission it is to advance diversity in engineering and its related disciplines. Applications from students from backgrounds critically underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math are especially encouraged. DeSales University is offering a Summer Video Institute for ages 13 and up. The SVI provides an intense and rewarding introduction to the world of digital filmmaking. The campus is located in Center Valley, PA and has a residential option. Go to www.desales.edu/svi. REGIS COLLEGE SUMMER SCHOLARS is a pre-college program offered July 12 17, 2015. Students attending the program will explore two hot career paths Healthcare and Communication. They will engage in coursework from three college-level courses: Communication, Writing Seminar, Public Health, and Marketing. Regis College is located just 12 miles from Boston, MA. COMMUNITY SERVICE AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES If you do a search you can find many volunteer opportunities. THE MURAL ARTS PROGRAM is always seeking dedicated individuals to volunteer their time. If you have a few hours on a consistent basis or if you only have time to help with an event once in a while, they could use your help. Opportunities exist for artists (great learning experience and way of gaining solid mural-making experience), office assistants, and event assistants. If you are interested, please let them know your hours of availability and what type of work you are interested in. You can get information at http://www.muralarts.org. PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM wants high school interns who are willing to devote their time, talents and expertise. Applicants must be 18 years or older. THE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE SCIENCE MUSEUM is looking for student volunteers who are 15 or older, enjoy people, and are willing to promote science education. THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER is looking for volunteers to greet visitors, work in exhibit areas, assist in offices and work at special events. You must be over 15 to apply.
