A quick guide to... Setting Up Goals

What is the GetResponse Goals feature? An easy-to-use interface lets you track website conversions from email links. Here s how it works. You send out an email campaign containing a link to a page on your website. When a subscriber clicks the link and takes a specific action you have pre-defined, the Goals feature tracks those actions. It also generates data you can use to monitor and improve future campaigns. The Goals feature does not require any external application. You simply complete a Profile and install the auto-generated script. The system automatically tracks and reports user behavior and measures website conversions. Goals are harvested only from URLs that have been assigned to individual roles. Getting the most out of GetResponse Goals A good example of using Goals is to track the process of completing an online purchase. Let s assume that the outgoing message contains a link to two specific products. The intention is not only for the customer to complete the purchase. We also want to collect information about profits generated by selling these particular products through information sent via email. With dynamic tracking scripts, Email Analytics quickly provides results on specific objectives such as sales and traffic - listed in a simple, interesting way. 2

What s needed to track the results? 1. Message must be sent in HTML format using GetResponse. 2. The Goals tracking script must be properly installed on your website. 3. Recipient s browser must allow the system to create a cookie file. 4. Your Goals Profile must be configured properly. 5. At least one Goal must be created. How is the Goals Profile created? To create a Profile, hover on Statistics in the Dashboard menu and select Email Analytics. From the left sidebar, select Manage Goals. If you are visiting this screen for the first time, you will be prompted to create a Profile, because none exist. Hint: Profiles are not campaign-specific. This means you can use the same Profiles and Goals in multiple campaigns inside your GetResponse account. Next, complete the configuration settings: Manage Goals - View and adjust the configuration options. Profile name - Define a name and description for the Profile. Domain URL - Specify your domain to be tracked by the Goals you create. Hint: Each domain can have only one Profile assigned in your account. Creating several Profiles for a single domain would cause interference in Goals monitoring. 3

Paste code on your site - The script from the code frame should be pasted in the source code of the page you want to track. The best place for this script is the top of the source code before closing the </ body> tag. Code should be placed throughout the website, meaning that the tracking code should be placed on all pages assigned to the domain. Check code status This quickly checks whether the previously generated script has been installed correctly on your website. Hint: Parameters specified in the pasted script that are numbered from 0 to 5 are used to collect additional values dynamically. Each value must be assigned to a specific parameter in the following format: param_0 numeric_value Parameters accept numeric values only. They can be entered manually or generated dynamically by the website s own script method. 4

How are individual Goals created? Creating an individual Goal depends on how you configure the settings: Manage Goals - This is the main Profile management page, where you access the configuration options. Goal name - Define a name for the Goal description, such as sale of a specific product. Goal status - Select ON / OFF to specify whether a Goal will be tracked or not. Match Type - Determine how the Goal will be matched on the domain. Click Learn more about matches to help you decide which is best for you. Web address - Determines whether the assigned URL is protected or not. URL - Enter the exact address to be tracked. As you ll see, a prefix to the root domain that you specified in your Profile is registered permanently, so you specify only the end of the address assigned to a particular web page. Goal Type I - Enter the value that will be counted to calculate profits. Goal type II - (Track multiple variables for this Goal) - This functionality is for assigning specific names to your parameters. You must first determine the parameters in the code tracker script, as described in the above hint. Number of parameters defined in the source code must match the number of parameters defined in the user panel. Otherwise, the Goals will not be counted because of incorrect settings configuration. 5

How to track the results of Goals Basic information about the Goals is available in tabular form in the list of Goals in each Profile. Precise data on the benchmarks can be found in the statistics of the campaign. To view statistics for a particular Goal returned by a specific email message, you first need to define the campaign from which the message was sent. Then, select a specific message title from the dropdown list. In Goals you will find two types of charts line and bar graph that show results achieved versus Goals of a selected message. You can view data graphs for any tracked actions, which means that the sent email messages had to contain a link to the page you want to track. Or they must have been divided into individual Goals and parameters that you named before you sent the emails. 6

7

Goals and mailing list segmentation Goals are also available from the segmentation panel. This means you can create segments based on data from any of your Goals. To create a segment, specify the following criteria: Select the Goal as the search condition. Specify the Profile in which the Goal was created. Select the parameter value, such as: less than, greater than, etc. Determine the value by which the prior parameter will be determined. 8

A few final tips Goals work only in the context of GetResponse campaign emails sent. Goals cannot be used as a general website traffic-monitoring tool. To define Goals, you need a domain in which you can install the script in the source code. Each domain can be assigned only one Profile. You may create unlimited Goals, and each can be assigned additional dynamic parameters. 9
