We offer a range of programmes, including HNCs, HNDs, Degrees and BA Honours Degrees, for those interested in studying a higher qualification in sport, health and social care, and counselling. With vocationally specific content, the courses are designed to provide students with the relevant employability skills for their chosen career. Many can be studied either full-time or part-time and some are delivered across two days, allowing for the opportunity to work alongside the course. Students will benefit from high quality teaching, bringing together experience and expertise from the private and public sectors. Sport lecturers have extensive knowledge in coaching sport to elite level, while staff teaching the BCAP accredited counselling degree programme are actively involved in the academic and clinical aspects of the field. Within health and care, there are particularly strong links with service providers and professional organisations within the sector. There are excellent facilities for sport, including well-equipped fitness suites and a large, multi-purpose sports hall that has hosted international basketball matches. Diploma of Higher Education Person-Centred Counselling This course focuses on person-centred theory and practice, it has taught elements, seminars, tutorial and personal development groups. The use of role play is a significant part of the programme. Students will work with clients under supervision and deepen their grasp of theory and practice. Different therapeutic modalities are studied and commonalities, as well as significant differences, explicated and critiqued. Applicants must be able to demonstrate capacity for self-awareness, maturity and stability and be able to cope with the emotional demands of the course. description The course will involve a comprehensive study of Carl Rogers theory and practice contextualised in a range of key paradigms. Students have the opportunity to work with clients through the counselling service with clinical supervision provided. The course is also validated by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and will enable students to apply for accreditation after further work with clients. This course is made up of two levels: The Certificate in Higher Education which is studied in year one, and the Diploma which is studied in year two. College-based learning makes up much of the programme and, in addition, clinical work and supervision are arranged on an individual basis, and take place on a non- College day. This programme is delivered through classroom based activity, guided assignment work, seminars, workshops, experiential and client work. BA (Hons) in Counselling Studies This is professional training in humanistic, person-centred counselling/psychotherapy. Who is this course for? This course is for individuals with an interest in mental health and the human condition, and a willingness to work with others in times of significant distress. What our graduates do Some graduates find employment within the NHS, as part of the IAPT (improving access to psychological therapy) programme; others set up in private practice or work for voluntary organisations. It should be borne in mind that counselling/ psychotherapy is not a full-time activity and that most therapists work part-time or have other occupations in allied sectors. Students experience a psychologically demanding programme which will challenge their world view. The full-time Degree allows students to gain these industry specific management skills in two years. description The Degree in Management of Sport programme provides the opportunity to develop and practice managerial skills and knowledge applied to the variety of sports industries. The team of lecturers delivering this programme are all experts in their field and importantly maintain their connections with industry which includes the Team Manager of Great Britain U20 Men s Basketball Team, the Sports Development Manager and Time Warner. A range of guest speakers and industry visits complement the team of lecturers and further emphasises the dedication the team have in maintaining the vocational relevance of the degree programme. In addition to the two days at College, students will be required to undertake one day per week in a work placement. Many students choose to do their work experience with their current part-time employers, but if this is not suitable, students are supported with finding suitable work placements. Excellent industry visits enrich learning and have included trips to the Olympic Village. content Year one The first year of the Degree programme is designed to introduce students to a range of management and sport subject areas and to develop the important academic skills needed in order to get the best degree possible. Direct applications You may apply directly to Colchester Institute using one of our own application forms ONLY IF: (a) it is your intention to study part-time or (b) you are currently undertaking a full-time degree at Colchester Institute and wish to transfer internally to another degree or (c) you are applying for postgraduate study. Fees INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT PLANNING Major Government reforms to student finance commenced in 2012-2013 resulting in universities and colleges being able to charge variable fees.
