Course Description Cyber Security Fundamentals introduces the basic concepts and terminology of cyber security and information assurance. The course examines how the concept of security integrates into the importance of user involvement, security training, ethics, trust, and best practices management. The fundamental skills cover internal and external threats to network security and design, how to enforce network level security policies, how to protect an organization s information, and a broad range of other topics. Students must make a grade of 70 for minimum competence. Students will receive Interim Reports and Nine Weeks Report Cards as well as various other reports throughout the semester. A = 100 93 B = 92 85 C =84 77 D = 76 70 F = 69 0 Assessments And Examination Policy Assessments will be given at the completion of every section. The final exam will count 20% of the student s overall grade. The final exam consists of various topics and standards learned throughout this course. Exam Exemption Policy Students in Grades 9 12 take cumulative, standards based, end of course examinations. When applicable, schools administer State End of Course tests required by the S.C. Educational Accountability Act. No student may exempt a State End of Course Exam. Cumulative examinations have a computational weight of 20 percent of the final average. Seniors are exempt from a course final exam if they have an overall average of 85 or higher. Seniors who have at least an 85 average may opt to take a final exam in that course to improve their grade. For these students, their final grade may be raised, but not lowered, by their final exam grade. Those seniors who do not have an overall average of 85 or higher will take exams as scheduled. Students in grades 9 11 will take exams as scheduled. TestOut Advanced Cyber Security Syllabus 2

TestOut is an online courseware platform designed to provide students with a simulated environment in which to complete tasks and activities outlined as part of the CompTIA Security+ certification exam objectives. Completed all the material in TestOut is very important as it will lay the ground work for the physical lab exercises we complete in class. Because of this, each lab and practice exam question activity is worth 1 point. Your TestOut grade for each module will be determined by adding up all of the 1 point activities and dividing by the total number of 1 point activities. For instance, if Module 2 has a total of 25 activities (all the practice exam sections and labs), you can earn 25 points. If you only complete or pass 20 of those activities, your grade will be 20/25 which is put into the gradebook as an 80. That being said, in TestOut, we will adhere to the grading system already in place. For instance, lab exercises are pass/fail. You must complete ALL portions of the lab correctly in order to get full credit for the lab. If you incorrectly complete on portion, you do not get credit for the lab. With the practice exam sections, you must score 80% of the questions right in order to receive credit for the practice exam section. Book Study and Assignments: This semester we will be reading Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know by P.W. Singer. Throughout the semester we will have Reading Checkpoints and assignments to ensure that students are reading the text and understanding where everything we re learning fits in to the world. Please see my website for more information on the assignment and check the course calendar for due dates on these assignments as well. Collection of Assignments: The majority of assignments will be collected through Schoology.com or another classroom management system where they be graded and returned. If the CMS does not allow the collection of assignments for any reason, they will be turned in to a designated area in the classroom. When they are returned, they should be placed in the student s binder. COURSE POLICIES Student Make up Work Policy Students will be responsible for all work missed during an absence due to an illness or an emergency. If a student misses class. It is the student s responsibility to make up all missed work within five (5) days of missing school. Students will have access to an online learning environment that can be supplemented for classroom learning. This is not the primary means of learning, but it a valuable resource for success in this course. In the event that a student misses a lab that cannot be replicated on an individual basis, I will assign an alternate task for the lab. Student Conduct In Class Policy Any acts of classroom disruption that go beyond the normal rights of students will not be tolerated. Students will follow all procedures and policies in accordance with the Wando Advanced Cyber Security Syllabus 3

High School Academic Code of Conduct described in the Student Handbook. Additionally, there is to be no unauthorized eating, chewing gum or drinking in the classroom. Students are expected to practice good safety at all times. When in my classroom, students must comply with the following policies: 1. Follow directions the first time they are given. 2. Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. 3. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking. 4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 5. No food or drinks near the computer including water. 6. Food or drinks may be placed at the back of the room. 7. Bookbags, purses, etc. are to kept at the back of the room and out of the walkways. If a student breaks one of these policies, the following consequences will occur: First time student breaks a policy: Second time student breaks a policy: after class. Third time student breaks a policy: after class. Fourth time student breaks a policy: Verbal warning is given. Student will remain 30 seconds Student will remain 60 seconds Referral to Administration. If a student is severely disruptive, an administrator will be called to the classroom and the student will be removed. You will receive a copy of the classroom management plan along with this syllabus. Please read, sign, and return it the next day of class. Cell Phone Policy It is my experience that cell phones pose a great distraction to students when used in the classroom during instructional time, when instruction does not require the use of them. Therefore, I will not allow cell phones to be used in my classroom during instruction unless it is for teaching or instructional purposes. If that is the case, it will be very apparent and instructions will be given in the assignment. Students can use their cell phones during independent assignments unless it appears that the device poses a distraction to the student. It is up to the teacher to make this determination. If it is determined that the device poses a distraction, the student will be asked to put the device away. If it reappears, the discipline plan below will be followed according to school rules. Wando High School s Academic Misconduct Policy is described in the student handbook. Students assume full responsibility for the content and integrity of the academic work they submit. A student's submitted work, examinations, reports, and projects must be that of the student's own work. Students shall be guilty of academic misconduct if they: Represent the work of others as their own Use or obtain unauthorized assistance in any academic work Give unauthorized assistance to other students Modify, without instructor approval, an examination, paper, record, or report for the purpose of obtaining additional credit Misrepresent the content of submitted work Laboratory Policy For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other words, students may not "work together" on graded assignments unless express permission is given. Such collaboration constitutes academic misconduct. A student may not use or copy (by any means) another's work (or portions of it) and represent it as his/her own. Students must have DIRECT PERMISSION from the teacher to work together. It will be made absolutely clear what is and is not a group assignment. As a computer user at Wando High School, all students must adhere to the rules and procedures identified in the Wando Internet Guidelines found on pages seven and eight of the student handbook. Students who take courses within the Career and Technology Department will also sign and agree to the CCSD Acceptable Use Policy Code of Ethics on appropriate computer use in the classroom. The content covered will be delivered and mastered at the student s own pace. The teacher will provide weekly checkpoints so that students stay on schedule and will notify parents when the student falls behind. In an independent study, students have more responsibility to finish work without the direct instruction from the teacher. Between checkpoints, the instructor will sit down with each student and discuss the key points and highlights of the material covered.
