MPPA Newsletter / July 2014 Congratulations Class of 2014! On Friday, May 16, 2014 the 51st annual Graduate Program Commencement took place. The event was held under the sunny skies at William Rolland Stadium. As tradition, the event began with the unveiling of the flags. Three students from our program carried the flags including Bexy Gomez (United States of America) Dora Cardona (California) and Tariq Alghamdi (Saudi Arabian). The Commencement exercises included the national anthem, the CLU hymm and of course inspiring welcome speeches told by our CLU members and faculty. MPPA student Jason Barnes, gave the introduction speech for the Class of 2014 to the audience. We are so proud of our graduates and thank all of the family members and friends in the audience who were there to support! To watch the graduate commencement video, click here! MPPA Graduate Reception On May 9th, MPPA students were invited to a reception to celebrate their accomplishments. Dr. Powell led the reception and presented the two new full time faculty members, Dr. Linda-Marie Sundstrom and Andy Pattison. Awards were also administered to students who excelled in particular areas of the program. Ana Maria Kilpatrick received an award for Outstanding Departmental Service, Michael Laparaik received the Distinguished Student award, and Jason Barnes received an award for Outstanding Leadership. The Public Service Fellows, Nina Kuzniak, Zach Zabo and Bexy Gomez, were also recognized at the reception. The Public Service Fellows are outstanding CLU undergraduates invited to participate in the MPPA program with full scholarship and summer stipends to complete research. PRING MPPA Newsletter / July 2014 Faculty News Message from the Director Dr. David Powell I hope everyone is enjoying Summer Term! The days are warmer and the parking is more plentiful so what s not to enjoy? Even though it is summer, things are still happening around the MPPA Program. Dr. Sundstrom and I had the pleasure of attending the celebration of President Reagan s life on June 5th at the Reagan Library. We heard an interesting panel discussion moderated by Peggy Noonan and attended a luncheon that featured a keynote address by former Secretary of State James Baker III. In other faculty news, congratulations are in order for Professor Andy Pattison who was recently appointed to the Ventura City Housing Commission by the Ventura City Council. Professor Pattison will serve as an appointed Commissioner. The MPPA Program sponsored a successful Inside City Hall event on June 12th featuring Ventura City Manager Mark Watkins. Special thanks go to Professor Pattison for organizing the event! If you have not registered for Fall and Winter Terms yet, please do so as soon as you can. PRING MPPA Newsletter / July 2014 Faculty News Faculty Attends Reagan Memorial Thursday June 5th marked the 10th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan s death. Dr. Powell and Dr. Sundstrom were invited as V.I.P. guests to attend the beautiful remembrance event at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley. Speakers at the commemoration included James Baker, Peggy Noonan, Frederick Ryan, Steven Hayward, Lou Cannon and Craig Shirley. As tradition, Nancy Reagan placed flowers on her late husbands grave after the remembrance. CBS interviewed her after the reception and she solemnly stated, I still feel his presence every day and often find him in my dreams at night. Student News Career Services Fall/Winter Registration Fall 2014 and Winter 2015 registration is already open. International MPPA students must contact Darla Arcuri in the MPPA Office. All other MPPA students may register online through WebAdvisor. Please access WebAdvisor for the most accurate information on class availability. Comprehensive Exam The Fall comp exam will be on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Winter exam will be on February 14, 2015. And the Spring exam will be on May 9, 2015. The exam focuses on the 5 core courses in the MPPA program. Students must pass each of the 5 subject areas. You must register for PA 5XC during the Fall Term and plan to take PA 501 as a preparation course. The exam fee is $300. More info on Comp exams is posted in MyCLU under Comprehensive Exam. Abdullah Alshehri, graduated in May is now the Organization Development Specialist in the Policies and Procedures Department at Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA). Courses of Interest Sustainable Development Course (582-02) A Sustainable Development Policy course will be offered in Winter 2015, taught by Professor Andy Pattison. The course will focus on the underlying principles and issues of sustainability: environmental protection, economic development and social equality. Case studies, class activities and guest speakers will be used to analyze how governments achieve their objectives related to sustainable development. Previously, State Senator Fran Pavely has spoken to students regarding sustainability and policy. Sustainable development policy and planning has become increasingly popular in recent years. Careers in the field of sustainable development are also a growing sector of the job market, so expertise and knowledge of sustainable development policy and planning skills are highly valued. Strategic Planning Institute (507) This course is a hands-on workshop representing a collaboration between the CLU MPPA program and the Ventura County Center for Nonprofit Leadership (CNL). Students learn strategic planning tools for public and nonprofit agencies, and apply the techniques on behalf of a local nonprofit agency. Festival of Scholars 2014 The Festival of Scholars showcases the scholarly work from both undergraduate and graduate programs. This year the MPPA program had four representatives in the festival! One MPPA student participated in the Political Science Perspectives on Global Citizenship and Civic Engagement abstract presentation. Shakespeare Festival 2014 This year the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company will be performing both Twelfth Night and Antony and Cleopatra. Twelfth Night is a romantic comedy that tells the confusing story of reuniting lost twin siblings. Antony and Cleopatra is a romantic tragedy showcasing the rage and angst that ensues between two distant lovers. Faculty Bios Brad Bjelke, J.D., is Vice President and General Counsel of California Regional Multiple Listing Service, Inc., a California non-profit mutual benefit corporation. Professor Bjelke is an administrative and constitutional law scholar who has been teaching at CLU for more than 8 years. He is a frequent speaker on administrative law and compliance issues. Robert Brooks, J.D., Bob Brooks retired from the Ventura County Sheriff s Office in 2011, after serving as the Sheriff for 13 years at the conclusion of a 37-year law enforcement career. Bob received a Doctor of Laws degree from California Lutheran University and graduate degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School and Regent University. He is currently an adjunct professor in CLU s Public Policy program teaching Business Ethics and the Maldonado Fellow in the Public Policy program at Pepperdine University. Jeff Burgh, M.P.P.A., serves as the Assistant Auditor-Controller for the County of Ventura, with extensive experience in budget development and execution. He teaches Public Budget and Finance. Tom Cady, M.P.A., is finishing his doctorate in Criminal Justice and is former Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Oxnard. Loredana Carson, M.P.P.A., has worked in Adult Education for Conejo Unified School District for over 17 years. In addition, she teaches the Foundation courses for International students in the MPPA program. The Foundation course serves to acclimate the students to American University practices and focuses on the best practices of researching, writing, and oral presentation skills as well as providing an overview of American history and government. She holds a B.A. in Linguistics from UCLA. K.T. Connor, Ph.D., is Managing Director of Applied AxioMetrics, an international network of consultants working with the assessment and application of valuing and thinking patterns. She is currently President of the Robert S. Hartman Institute, a not-for-profit organization devoted to furthering the work of Hartman, the "Father of Value Science." She holds a Ph.D. from USC and a Masters from Case Western University. Dao Minh Doan, R.A., M.U.R.P., Dao Minh Doan, RA, MURP, is a licensed architect in California, CFO/Senior Principal and partner at Mainstreet Architects + Planners, Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from UCLA, with concentrations in Transportation Policy and Planning, and Environmental Analysis and Policy. Marilyn Gesch, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in Sociology from UCSB and was a Research Fellow at UCLA in the HIV/AIDS Training Program. In her work as a research consultant she has conducted studies on clients' health behaviors for the Ventura County Department of Public Health. Bruce Gillies, Psy.D., an assistant professor at CLU, holds a doctorate in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. After 22 years of active duty in the Navy, he retired in 2000 as a Master Chief (E9). He has conducted scientific and applied research in Org Leadership, Sports Psychology, Org Development and Career Development, and has been a consultant to Fortune 500 companies. He also teaches in the undergraduate program and in the MBA program. Herbert Gooch, Ph.D., holds an M.B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. He is a professor of Political Science. Jeff Gorell, J.D., had his own firm specializing in policy development and advocacy at state and local levels before his election to the California State Assembly in 2010. He has worked for the District Attorney s office and is a Lt. Commander in the Navy, recently returned from Afghanistan. 10

Faculty Bios Doug Green, M.B.A., teaches Non-Profit Management at CLU, and has extensive experience in local management and strategic planning in this sector. He is currently finishing his doctoral studies at Pepperdine. Stan Hakes, M.P.A., is Chief of Staff to Ventura County Supervisor John Zaragoza with more than 25 years local government management experience in the fields of public works, budget and finance, environmental policy, community outreach and county administration. He is a former Chair and Board member of the Municipal Management Association of Southern California- Channel Islands Chapter. Kathleen Haworth, Ed.D., completed her doctorate in Organizational Leadership and has been awarded a National Distinguished Principal Award by the U. S. Department of Education for excellence in her work in educational administration and policy. She teaches in the areas of social policy and organizational leadership. Richard G. Heller, Ph.D., is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees (including his M.S.B.A. and J.D.). In 2001, he received his Ph.D. from USC s School of Policy, Planning, and Development. In addition to his professional work, for more than fifteen years, Richard served USC as an adjunct faculty member teaching courses in USC s law school, Graduate Business School, and School of Policy, Planning, and Development. Haco Hoang, Ph.D., is a political science professor with an emphasis in International Relations from Boston University. She was a Fulbright Scholar at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore. Hoang was a policy analyst in Los Angeles on education and budget issues and also worked as a policy consultant on projects related to female gangs, youth civic engagement, and neighborhood councils for the City of Los Angeles. Dante Honorico, M.B.A., M.P.A., is the former Chief Deputy of the Ventura County Sheriff s Office and is now a consultant specializing in change management, cultural diversity and public safety. Linda Le, M.P.P.A., was serves as Ventura County Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector/Chief Operations Officer. She teaches both Human Resources and Organizational Behavior. Jennifer Lobenhofer, MA (Political Science, Miami University) & MRP (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) is owner and principal at JSL Community Strategies, a consulting firm providing planning and analysis services to community and economic development agencies. Jennifer has more than a decade of experience providing training, technical assistance, and applied research support to local governments and nonprofit organizations in the area of community and economic development. She previously served as director of the Community Economic Development program at the University of North Carolina s School of Government. Jose Marichal, Ph.D., teaches courses on the Internet and Politics, public policy, race and politics, community development and California politics. His current projects include: a study of the relationship between acquiring digital skills and feelings of trust/efficacy among Latinos and African Americans and an examination of how civic hacking affects power dynamics at the local level. He is founder of the blog ThickCulture, sponsored by Contexts magazine. 11

Faculty Bios Robert J. Meadows, Ph.D., is a professor and chair of the Criminal Justice and Legal Studies program at CLU. Prior to teaching, Dr. Meadows was a police officer in Los Angeles. Dr. Meadow s research and teaching interests include violence and victimization and legal issues in criminal justice. Nanette S. Metz, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in Public Administration with an emphasis is aviation from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She served as a NASA Research Fellow during her study of network effectiveness for public-private partnerships in two national aeronautic alliances. She is a specialist in transportation policy who has her own consulting firm. She has taught at CLU since 2010 as well as for Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University and California State University--Channel Islands. Alisa Sparkia Moore, Esq., earned her J.D. from the University of Michigan, her B.A. from Michigan State University and her certificate in dispute resolution from UCSB. An attorney licensed in New Mexico, she provides public relations and communications assistance to colleges and universities in California, and teaches a range of courses from the associate's degree level through master's programs. John Moore, M.P.P.A., is the Editor of the Ventura County Star with an MPPA from CLU and extensive experience in print and digital media. Brent Morris, Ed.D., is a 34 year law enforcement veteran with experience at the City, County, and Federal level. Serving with the Ventura Police Department, Santa Barbara County Sheriff s Office, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Ventura County Sheriff s Office, Brent held a wide range of assignments including patrol, jail operations, training, executive protection, human resources, finance, and coroner investigations. Brent retired as a Commander with the Ventura County Sheriff s Office in 2012. Adina Nack, Ph.D., is a Professor of Sociology at CLU with interests in the social construction of identity and power relations, and she specializes in medical sociology and deviance studies. She serves locally as a member of the HIV/AIDS Coalition of Ventura County and nationally on the Board of Directors for the Council on Contemporary Families. Andy Pattison, M.P.A., received his B.A. in Biology from Skidmore College, and a Master in Public Administration with a focus in Environmental Policy, Management, and Law at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD). Andy is currently a National Science Foundation Research Fellow and Instructor at the UCD s School of Public Affairs where he is also a PhD candidate in the Sustainable Urban Infrastructure program. David Powell, Ph.D., comes to the MPPA Program from California State University, Long Beach where he served as Director of both the on-campus and MPA Distance Learning Programs. Prior to arriving at Cal State, Dr. Powell also taught public administration and political science at Florida Gulf Coast University and Eastern Illinois University. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Miami University in 1996 and also holds a Master s degree in Political Science from Ohio University and undergraduate degrees in Political Science and History from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Judith Richards, MBA, teaches Marketing Theory, Principles of Marketing, International Marketing, and Integrated Marketing Communications in the School of Management. She created the Negotiation and Conflict Management class offered in the MBA/MPPA programs. Richards enjoyed an exciting 20+ year career working for Fortune 200 corporations as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. She is president of her own marketing and healthcare consulting firm. 12

Sandy Smith, M.P.A., is a land-use consultant in Westlake, and former City Councilman and Mayor for the City of Ventura. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Public Administration. Linda-Marie Sundstrom, Ph.D., has taught graduate level Public Administration and Nonprofit Management courses at UCLA, Cal State Long Beach, and Cal State Northridge. She is a Fulbright Scholar who taught graduate and Ph.D. level courses in Ukraine in 2010. She is full-time faculty at CLU and taught at Cal State Long Beach for many years. Dr. Sundstrom has a Bachelor s Degree in International Business and Marketing, a Master's Degree in Public Administration, and a Doctorate in Public Administration, with emphasis in Nonprofit Organizations. Prior to teaching in academia, she was a Senior Analyst in the Executive Office for one of the largest counties in California, where she developed, funded, and evaluated complex policies and projects that crossed departmental and jurisdictional boundaries. After her tenure in local government, she became a grant writing consultant for government agencies, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and tribal governments throughout Southern California.!
