Postgraduate Study at UOW Postgraduate study at the University of Wollongong (UOW) will give you an edge over others in your field even before you graduate. Our programs are designed to help you take your career to the next level, opening up more options for you in life. Whether that means improving your expertise, or changing direction, a UOW degree will get you where you want to go. FLEXIBILITY Postgraduate study requires focus, time and commitment. You already have other responsibilities your current job, your family, the life you ve spent years building. That s why many of our courses offer the flexibility to study full-time or part-time. At UOW, we don t believe the present should get in the way of the future. Other UOW campuses run on an intake system offering four intakes per year and some faculties offer a distance education program. Delivery Modes You don t have to stop your career to improve it. At UOW, we deliver our courses in a number of ways other than traditional face-to-face classes. BLOCK DELIVERY You can attend successive full-day classes to rapidly cover course material. WEEKEND CLASSES Some postgraduate subjects run on weekends to make it easier for you to fit study around your work schedule. EVENING CLASSES As with weekend classes, you will often have the option to attend lectures and tutorials after hours to help make study convenient. DISTANCE AND ONLINE LEARNING Most subjects at UOW integrate online learning including class discussions, reviewing and submitting assessments. Some are available entirely by distance, with no face-to-face classes. RANKINGS & RATINGS Young, Successful and World Class UOW was ranked equal 33rd in the world and equal first in Australia in the 2012 Times Higher Education Top 100 Under 50, a list of the world s best universities under 50 years old. We ve wasted no time earning our reputation for excellent research, teaching and learning. Top 100 in the World for Employers UOW is ranked in the top 100 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings Employer Review 2011. This review rates institutions based on employers opinions of their graduates. QS Top 200 Business School The Sydney Business School is the 13th top business school in the Asia Pacific region as ranked by QS in the 2011/2012 QS Global 200 Business School Report. Of the 11 Australian institutions featured in the list, the Sydney Business School placed third. The QS rank is devised with the input of employers from around the globe. Excellence in Management and Marketing In the ARC s Excellent in Research for Australia (ERA) assessments 2011, the Faculty of Commerce Schools of Management and Marketing scored 4 or world standard while Tourism scored 5 for outstanding performance well above world standard and was ranked first in the country. UOW: not just Wollongong UOW has campuses in the Shoalhaven, Southern Sydney, Batemans Bay, Bega and Moss Vale. It is possible to study an entire degree at one of these locations, without having to travel to Wollongong. OPTIONS AND APPLYING Coursework Programs UOW coursework programs will help you make a real impact on your career. You will develop practical, relevant skills based on the latest findings and practices from around the globe. Your degree is completed through subjects focusing in particular disciplines or professional areas. Some coursework degrees also offer research subjects. Similar to undergraduate study, postgraduate coursework assessment is based on a combination of written assignments, presentations, formal examinations, class participation and practical exercises. Sydney Business School Trimester One 4 February Trimester Two 13 May Trimester Three 19 August Most Coursework programs within the Faculties of Creative Arts, Education and Health and Behavioural Sciences have a closing date of 31 October for courses commencing the following year. Psychology, Nutrition, Clinical Exercise Physiology and Exercise Rehabilitation programs close on 30 September. Late applications will be considered where places are available. Costs UOW offers Commonwealth supported places for a number of their postgraduate coursework degrees where the Australian Government contributes, on average, about three quarters of the total funding for the educational costs. Eligible Commonwealth supported students can access HECS-HELP to defer part or all of their tuition fees. For further information visit www.uow.edu.au/future/postgrad/costs Research Programs There are three research options,, Professional Doctorate and Master of Philosophy, with entry requirements varying across program options. Research Strengths The UOW has built its successful research reputation by focusing on Research Strengths, grouped by five research themes, which are: Environmental Sustainability; Innovative Materials, Engineering & Manufacturing; Health & Medical Research; Information & Mathematical Sciences; and Society, Policy & Culture. UOW is home to the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science, is involved in a number of ARC and Cooperative Research Centres and has research institutes and centres supported by the National Food Industry Strategy, NSW Health, the Royal Australian Navy, and industry partners including BlueScope Steel, Integral Energy and leading companies in the pharmaceutical and information and communication technology sectors. Costs Most research programs are exempt from tuition fees. It is a UOW and Australian Government policy to award Domestic Doctoral and Master of Philosophy students an exempt place. For further information visit www.uow.edu.au/student/finances Scholarships UOW offers a wide range of research scholarships and awards to eligible Domestic Higher Degree Research (HDR) students. These scholarships are in the form of stipends and allowances to assist candidates in meeting their living costs while they undertake their research (please check individual scholarships for allowances and stipend amounts).
