Master of Teaching A graduate program for future teachers

Welcome to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education Why Melbourne? We offer a vibrant, friendly and exciting place to study, with contemporary facilities designed to meet your learning and social needs. Our environment is student-focussed and supportive and our courses are challenging. Home to a number of internationally recognised education experts, we are at the cutting edge of teaching and research. We are Australia s number one and among the world s finest for Education * (*QS World University Rankings by Subject). 1

The Master of Teaching difference The Master of Teaching is unique in Australia. Our innovative curriculum brings together theory and practice in a way that will give you powerful insights into children and young people, and how they learn. We are the only teaching degree in Australia to use a genuine clinical framework: You become an active part of a school or early childhood community from early in your studies, and are closely supported throughout. This means you can connect what you learn at university with what you learn while teaching (in a similar way to trainee doctors or nurses in a training hospital). You will develop the professional skills to assess and diagnose students individual learning needs, and to work with learners of all abilities. Our graduates: feel very well prepared for teaching are highly sought after by schools and early childhood services. Pari Gupte on placement at Malvern Central School 2

Early Childhood The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) is designed with a new type of early childhood professional in mind one who operates in a multi-disciplinary field involving care, education and health. The course covers children aged 0 8 years, reflecting the Victorian Government s early childhood strategy. Structure You can commence this program in either a start-year or mid-year intake. There are differences in the qualification options for each intake which are outlined below. The mid-year intake is recommended for those who are unfamiliar with the educational context of Australia. Start-year intake The core program comprises four full-time semesters over two years. You can choose to exit after the third semester with a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, which will qualify you to teach in early childhood settings (children aged 0 5 years). In your fourth semester, you can choose from one of three options to gain the full masters: 1. Early Years: receive dual registration to teach in early childhood settings and primary schools 2. Early Childhood (professional development): specialise in an area of interest, such as special education, and receive registration to teach in early childhood settings 3. Early Childhood (research): research a topic of interest which can form the basis for moving into PhD studies, and receive registration to teach in early childhood settings. You can undertake the fourth semester any time up to five years after completing the Postgraduate Diploma. Kate Hardinge, Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) candidate The clinical model that the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) uses and the interwoven nature of the practice and theory really attracted me. This course has given me the skills to involve children in critical reflection of the learning program. I have confidence in myself and my own abilities, and I am looking forward to gaining employment, knowing I am very prepared to teach. 1st Semester, 50 points and block placements in pre-school and primary settings. 2nd Semester, 50 points and a block placement in an early childhood setting. 3rd Semester, 50 points and a block placement in a pre-school setting. Exit Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood) ready to teach in early childhood settings 4th Semester, 50 points Up to 15 contact hours per week, plus 2 days per week in a primary school setting and 1 block placement. Or 4th Semester, 50 points Specialise in an area of interest by completing subjects from another course. Or 4th Semester, 50 points Completion of an individual research project in a particular area of interest. 5 Shan Pan, Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) graduate The Melbourne Graduate School of Education has a great reputation back in China and I was attracted to the practical elements of the course. I am now working as a kindergarten teacher in Brunswick - I wanted to work here first to apply what I have learnt at university then, we will see what happens next. You never know what will happen in the future, right? Mid-year intake This program is designed for students unfamiliar with education in Australia. It is undertaken in four semesters (200 points) over two years. The first semester provides an in-depth opportunity to learn more about working with children in an Australian context so you are better prepared to face the challenges throughout the remainder of the program, particularly during placements in early childhood settings. In turn this will help you achieve better results in the course and improve your future employability. This course will qualify you to teach in early childhood settings (children aged 0-5 years). 1st Semester, 50 points Up to 15 contact hours per week, plus observational visits in early childhood settings. 2nd Semester, 50 points and block placements in pre-school and primary settings. 3rd Semester, 50 points and a block placement in an early childhood setting. 4th Semester, 50 points and a block placement in a pre-school setting. Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) ready to teach in early childhood settings Qualification outcomes for each The outcomes of the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) differ depending on which intake you commence your studies. The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood) and the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) have been approved by The Australian Children s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and successful completion qualifies you to work in children s services in Australia (with children aged 0 5). If you are interested in receiving dual registration to teach in early childhood settings and primary schools, you will need to begin the course in the start-year intake and undertake the Early Years option in the fourth semester. You will then be qualified to work in children s services and to gain provisional registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as a primary teacher. Similarly, if you are interested in moving into research, you should begin the course in the start-year intake and undertake the Early Childhood (Research) option in the fourth semester. If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body. You may also choose to pursue a career in areas like: children s services coordination early childhood research policy formation quality regulation and assessment early intervention for children with special needs. 4

Primary The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a two year, full-time course that qualifies you to teach across all primary years as a generalist teacher with specialist knowledge in literacy and numeracy education. Eligible teacher candidates may also undertake subject specialisations in either mathematics or science. Ellie Jarrett, Master of Teaching (Primary) graduate I loved the practical experience I gained through the Master of Teaching model. By spending two days a week in a school, I was able to put my knowledge into practice straight away. The exposure to current teaching practices and the mentorship I received during the course helped me to feel well prepared in my first year of teaching. Working as a teacher is a great career; there is always an opportunity to learn and the fulfillment of working with children is constantly rewarding. Structure The first three semesters (150 points, 18 months) focus on your development as an interventionist primary teacher, who can teach across the curriculum and personalise learning to meet students individual needs. In addition, you will be introduced to different approaches to teacher-led research as you begin a series of capstone subjects. In the final semester (50 points, 6 months), you undertake specialised study in literacy and numeracy teaching. You will select from a suite of research-focussed capstone subjects to inform and improve your practice and also choose an elective subject to explore an area that interests you and is relevant to today s school system. Career outcomes The Master of Teaching (Primary) will qualify you for provisional registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body. You may also choose to pursue a career in a related field, such as: policy formation education research assessment and evaluation youth health and wellbeing. Semester 1, 50 points school placement and 1 block placement of 10 days. Semester 2, 50 points school placement and 1 block placement of 15 days. Semester 3, 50 points school placement and 1 block placement of 15 days. Semester 4, 50 points school placement and 1 block placement of 10 days. Master of Teaching (Primary) ready to teach 5

Secondary The Master of Teaching (Secondary) prepares you to be a highly effective teacher in your areas of discipline. Structure The program is intensive as you will complete one and a half years of standard study (150 points) in one year, after which you will be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary). This qualifies you for provisional registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). There are three options to complete the remaining 50 points of the Master of Teaching. All three options include subjects that prepare you to become a researcher-practitioner, and provide specific research training and project experience. 1. Induction: this option parallels the requirements for full VIT registration. You will work with a dedicated mentor taking an inquiry-based approach to developing your practice in order to build your professional portfolio. Subjects must be completed within your first year of teaching. 2. Research: if you achieved an average of 75 per cent or above in the first 150 points you can research an area of interest. This option allows you to progress to a PhD (subject to meeting academic requirements). 3. Professional development: broaden your expertise by undertaking subjects from an area of interest within our range of specialist programs and cement your learning through a capstone project. The research and professional development options can be commenced up to five years after completing the Postgraduate Diploma and taken either full-time over one semester or part-time over two semesters. Candidates are strongly encouraged to complete the final 50 points to achieve the Master of Teaching. In the future, all Australian graduate entry teaching degrees will require at least two years of full-time equivalent study before you can work as a teacher. Completing the full masters will ensure your qualification remains competitive in years to come. Career outcomes The Master of Teaching (Secondary) will qualify you for provisional registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body. You may also choose to pursue a career in a related field, such as: policy formation education research assessment and evaluation. Semester 1, 75 points Up to 18 contact hours per week, plus 2 days per week placement and 1 block placement of 20 days. Semester 2, 75 points Up to 18 contact hours per week, plus 2 days per week school placement and 1 block placement of 20 days. Semester 3, 50 points Completed through the induction, research or professional development options. Exit Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) ready to teach Andrew Power, Master of Teaching (Secondary) graduate I am working as an instrumental music teacher, teaching brass at three different schools, whilst also completing the final 50 points in the Master of Teaching via coursework. So far I have used the Master of Teaching as a pathway to network with schools (I am now working at one of my placement schools), as well as using much of what I learnt in my practice as a teacher. Master of Teaching (Secondary) ready to teach 6

Internship program In the Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship you get paid to teach in a secondary school while completing your teaching degree. Following a rigorous selection process, we ll match applicants who have the right mix of outstanding academic results, experience and aptitude to teaching internships in secondary schools around Victoria. Structure The program consists of 200 credit points of study taken over three years while you are employed and teaching at a secondary school. You will complete 150 points over the first two years while teaching on a reduced teaching load (0.8 FTE), enabling time for university studies. In your final year, you will transition to full-time employment (1.0 FTE) while completing 50 points through capstone studies and electives, or a research project. Study is structured around five campus-based intensives with additional study conducted online throughout each year. The course starts in November with a 6-week study program and school induction. You will then commence employment in a school the following January from the beginning of Term 1 on a starting salary. Support Throughout the three years, you will be provided with an exceptionally strong support network of supervisors, mentors and coaches to help you transition into leading a classroom. You will continue your academic studies alongside teaching so you will continually be able to apply what you are learning. November preceding Year 1 6 week on-campus intensive study period and school induction (late November to mid-january). Career outcomes You will graduate with: a strong understanding of the latest research in interventionist teaching strategies so you can individually diagnose and tailor learning for the range of your students abilities an abundance of hands-on experience in the classroom eligibility to apply for your full teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching putting your employability in good stead as you branch out in your teaching career. Jodie O Connor, Internship candidate The drawcard of this course is that I don t have to go without a salary, and I m able to go straight into school. I think studying this way will make me a better teacher. With all the support the university offers over three years, I think it s a great way to really improve ourselves and become the best teachers we can. Year 1, 87.5 points A teaching load of 0.8 FTE plus on-campus intensive study period (1 week, winter school holidays) and ongoing online study. Year 2, 62.5 points A teaching load of 0.8 FTE plus 2 on-campus intensive study periods (1 week each) during school summer and winter breaks and ongoing online study. Year 3, 50 points Full time employment (1.0 FTE) plus 50 points of study completed through capstone studies and electives, or research option (including a 1 week on-campus intensive program in summer. Timing and mode of study during the year depends on options selected). Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship eligible for full teacher registration with VIT 7
