Registering Unless you have been pre-registered with Editorial Manager (you will have received confirmation of a username and password), you will need to register before proceeding. Select Register on the main menu bar at the top of the screen (see below) You will then be taken to a Registration page Please enter your personal information to begin this process, note information fields marked with (*) must be completed Next to the line that asks Are you available as a Reviewer? click the Yes button At the bottom of this form is a field where you must pick a preferred user name. You will need to remember this in order to access Editorial Manager When you are happy with the information you have provided, click the Continue button to proceed Logging In Upon registering with Editorial Manager, a notification will be sent to the email address you specified in your registration information; it will contain your username and password. You will need these to log in To log in, click login on the main menu bar at the top of the screen (see below) You will be taken to the Editorial manager Log-In screen (below) Enter your username and password in the appropriate fields. This will bring you to the Reviewer Main Menu a list of functions you have been enabled to perform within the system Changing your password You may change your password at any time. To do so, log into the system and select Update my Information from the main menu at the top of the screen (see below) Simply select your old password and retype a password you would prefer Click update to process your request. Software requirements As a reviewer using Editorial Manager, you must have Adobe Acrobat (a PDF reader, version 5 or higher) installed on your system. If you need to install this software, you can download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader at the following address http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html If you experience difficulty installing or using this software, you should contact your IT department for assistance, Adobe also offers a help database for their free Reader at this address: http://www.knowledge.adobe.com/kanisaesp.asp?adobeproduct=acrobat_reader New Reviewer Invitations If you are invited to be a Reviewer for a manuscript, you will need to indicate whether you choose to Accept or Decline. From the Reviewer Main Menu, click New Review Invitations this takes you to a list of review assignments that you have yet to agree or decline Click View to view the Title and Abstract of the manuscript. By clicking Agree to Review, the manuscript will move into your Pending Assignments, where you can begin the review process. Clicking on Decline to Review will alert the Journal Office that you will not be reviewing the paper. If you agree to review the paper, but later decide you cannot, please follow the instructions for Submitting your review and select withdraw from the recommendation list; alternatively please contact the Journal Office via email Updated 10/05/05 5
Submitting your review Once you have agreed to review your assignment, you can access the manuscript by clicking on Pending Assignments on the Reviewer Main menu. There are several actions you can perform from this menu You may download the PDF to your desktop by selecting Download Manuscript. To print out a copy of the manuscript from the PDF file, select File menu in the upper left corner of the Acrobat window and select Print When you are ready to submit your recommendations, click Submit Recommendation. This will bring you to the Reviewer Recommendation and Comments Sheet (below) Updated 10/05/05 6
By using the pull-down menu at the top of the form that is under Recommendation you can choose your recommendation tern (Accept with revision, Reject etc.) Enter you review comments to the Author (they will not know who reviewed the paper) and any confidential comments to the Editor in the fields provided For guidance on reviewing papers specifically for Ships & Offshore Structures click on Reviewer Instructions which will deal with details on paper content, subject matter and so forth For your convenience and to take advantage of word processing features (spell check, bullets etc) we suggest you use your regular word program (MS Word) when typing your review, then copy and paste you comments into the boxes provided. Click Save & Submit Later to save any comments and continue working. By clicking Open in New Window button at the top right of the data entry fields, this will open a new window browser, providing a larger view of the review field. Clicking Proof and Print will open a window containing all of the review information you have provided. Click Submit Now to proceed, this will bring up a screen that shows you the body of your review for you to proof read before returning it to the Editor.
