Center for Global br Nursing Scholarship The mission of the TWU College of Nursing Center for Global Nursing Scholarship (CGNS) is to prepare nursing students to become exceptional citizens in a global society who live and lead with integrity, accountability and excellence, which is accomplished through worldwide collaboration with nursing colleagues to provide global learning opportunities for both nursing students and faculty.

Goals of TWU br CGNS Establish collaborative relationships with developing countries and/or their nursing programs to develop and sustain baccalaureate, master, and doctoral programs in nursing. Contribute to the knowledge base for nursing practice within the Millennium Development Goals.

Goals of TWU br CGNS Collaborate with international partners toward educating nurses in the conduct and application of research findings. Provide global service-learning opportunities for nursing students, graduate nurses and nursing faculty. Collaborate with intra-institutional programs that promote cultural diversity.

Increased focus on health promotion and disease prevention have refocused nurse educators and leaders efforts to reposition nursing into a global arena with international standards of education (NLN, 2003). Internationalization br within the NP Program at Rotterdam University An American/Dutch Partnership Curriculum: Various lessons in English; English books and articles; International NP guest lecturers and students; Global health care topics (cultural disparities, transcultural nursing, comparing international healthcare systems); 1350 = $1775- airline ticket, transporation, hotel, some food; Part of their registration fee; Marketing Tool- international trip.

Internationalization brabroad Promoting Borderless Nursing Practice An American/Dutch Partnership Creates a lasting impression of another healthcare and nursing system Increases cultural awareness. Reveals the importance of collaborating with international colleagues. Promotes nurses who are open to other philosophies, cultures and possibilities.

The Beginnings br Moved to the Netherlands 2003. International coordinator at Rotterdam University. Needed to find partner school. Alumnus of Texas Woman s University. Made site visit. Collaboration since in 2005.

Preparation: br Logistics Book airline tickets and hotel for large group 3 months in advance: Roommate list/passports/driver s license; Coordinate drivers for cars-baggage to a minimum; Make contact with local hospitals: Each hospital hosts 5-8 students for the week; provides 1 hr to let students present case study re: NP role implementation; many hospitals provide CEU s for event.

Preparation: br Logistics Keypal Exchange Eight week CV/autobiography exchange; Topics: role implementation, healthcare and nursing systems, challenges balancing professional and personal life;

Keypal Exchange br Week 1 Introduction, Short Autobiography, CV exchange. Week 2 For American students: What is your image about the Netherlands; For Dutch students: What is your image about the USA. Week 3 Explain your healthcare system in simple terms; Discuss the socio-political issues affecting your healthcare system; Discuss pros and cons; Current trends. Week 4 Description of your role and work environment as an NP student; Challenges and barriers to your role development. Week 5 Open for friendly exchange/discussion. Week 6 How do you distinguish yourself from a registered nurse and a nurse practitioner? What activities will facilitate this role transition? Week 7 What have you gained from this international exchange? What questions would you recommend to be added to this schedule? Week 8 Evaluate exchange

Evaluation br This assignment accounts for 10% of the course grade & has two parts: KeyPal exchange (5%) Evaluation of the KeyPal experience: a 2-page narrative summary due to their clinical advisor. In the summary they discuss the international collaboration and the top three things they learned related to the collaboration and the KeyPal topical questions. Clear writing style without grammatical errors of the summary narrative and address your learning outcomes of the topical questions and your international experience. Case study with collaboration including the international visitors (5%): Clear presentation of Case Study. In addition, each student evaluates their colleagues and self on the contribution to the Case Study.

International conference on NP practice and education hosted by University of Rotterdam and Texas Woman s University alternating between US and European sites. Future brplans Funding for Houston faculty & students traveling to Rotterdam. Development of graduate nursing elective for exchange program. Expansion of exchange opportunities for more members of NP faculty.
