2 Academic Portfolio 2 RN-BSN ACADEMIC PORTFOLIO Each RN-BSN student is required to maintain an academic portfolio in Foliotek, an online portfolio system, throughout the core of the BSN program. The academic portfolio is a collection of data related to the student s progress in achieving the baccalaureate program outcomes. It is a tool for student learning, self-evaluation, and assessment. It serves as a link between curriculum course content, course objectives, program outcomes, and professional nursing experience. The student portfolio is used to showcase professional role development, values, core competence and critical thinking. The completed portfolio is an integral portion of the student and program assessment process. Introduction The academic portfolio guidelines are designed to provide an explanation for what should be found in each section of the portfolio. It is required that the portfolio be developed through Foliotek and will be retained by the department for evaluation by accrediting agencies. The portfolio will be reviewed after each course. Some examples for determining a grade may be as follows: Professional appearance Demonstration that BSN program outcomes have been met Journaling examples showing evidence of current nursing practice Evidence of value-based nursing, growth in the profession, and life-long learning Objectives Demonstrate student professional growth through the program Assess student academic achievement at the end of the RN-BSN Completion Program. Provide students with a tool that documents learning in order to enhance professional advancement and Provide documentation for program evaluation purposes

3 Academic Portfolio 3 Bachelor of Science in Nursing Outcomes The Bachelor of Science nursing graduate will be able to: 1. Demonstrate professional nursing leadership with technical proficiency. Graduates demonstrate use principles of management and leadership, evidenced in: a. the care of clients, families, and communities b. management of physical, fiscal, and human resources. 2. Apply critical thinking and problem solving to provide nursing care, which promotes holism and adaptation by: a. discovering research questions b. critically analyzing research c. applying research to practice. 3. Incorporate the principles of communication, client education and client advocacy into practice. 4. Exhibit a commitment to individual and professional growth as a lifelong learner, evidenced by: a. continuing formal education, informal education b. reading refereed professional journals c. participating in shaping the health care delivery system. 5. Provide, delegate and/or supervise nursing care based on current knowledge, theory, and research to promote holism and adaptation as evidenced by the ability to: a. Assess and diagnose the health status of diverse individuals, families, and communities. b. Plan, implement, and evaluate the care for diverse individuals, families, and communities in structured and unstructured settings who require nursing at restorative, maintenance or promotion levels. 6. Evaluate career choices within the nursing profession based on emerging skills and personal strengths and abilities. 7. Display behaviors as a member of the profession of nursing based on standards of practice and professional codes of ethics to: a. assume accountability for own nursing practice b. practice within ethical and legal frameworks 8. Demonstrate collaboration with other health care providers to promote the full human potential. (The liberal arts education provides opportunities for growth in knowledge, personal integrity, spirituality, and professional competence).

4 Academic Portfolio 4 It is expected that each student will address all baccalaureate program outcomes by the end of the program. The collection of course summaries must reflect analysis and application of the baccalaureate program outcomes, not just a list of facts. For example, baccalaureate program outcome #1 may be addressed in Leadership and Management and Research. The reflective summary from Health Assessment and Community Nursing may demonstrate achievement of baccalaureate program outcome #2. The goal is to document that all eight outcomes have been clearly met by the end of the program. At the end of the program you can create a webpage through Foliotek to share with family, friends, prospective graduate programs, and/or prospective employers. A prospective employer should be able to read the reflective summaries and see the highlights of what you have accomplished in this program. Present yourself to future employers by making these summaries creative, relevant, easy to read, and informative. Guidelines for Sections of Portfolio: Personal/Introduction This should be a narrative introduction. You may want to share about your family, hobbies, where you have lived or anything that will help the reader understand what makes you, you! This will be submitted in NU300 Adaptation Framework Professional Experience (Resume or Vitae) Provide a copy of a current resume or vitae that is professional in content and appearance. If involvement was in committee work, give examples of policies, reports, or procedures that you may have had a part in writing. You may include copies of peer or supervisory evaluation, personal or joint publications and presentations. Be creative and showcase your expertise. This will be submitted in AH330 Business Concepts Prior Learning Experiences (Transcripts/Certificates/etc.) Write a short narrative sharing your academic history. Copies of transcripts are optional. Place copies of all CEU s along with seminar outlines or program descriptions in this section. All professional certifications should be identified here. If you have been given any special awards or recognition, include copies of certificates. If you belong to a professional organization (ANA, Sigma Theta Tau, AWHONN, etc.), include copies. There is a special section in Foliotek for this information and it will be reviewed at the end of the program. Summary of Student Academic Achievement via RN-BSN Program Outcomes At the conclusion each course that provides applicable Program Outcomes and is required for inclusion in the Portfolio (see individual course syllabi), write a 1-2 page summary of what you learned in the course. Relate individual course objectives, through the use of reading, assignments, project team work, class discussion, papers, or presentations to the baccalaureate program outcomes listed on page 2. Not every program outcome needs to be addressed for every course,

5 Academic Portfolio 5 however, each program outcome must be eventually addressed. A general guide would be to address specifically those Program Outcomes indicated on the course syllabus. Course Portfolio Requirements You are given a list of required assignments to include in Foliotek; each syllabus has a list of assignments required for the portfolio as well. These required assignments reflect all eight baccalaureate program outcomes. Identify which baccalaureate program outcomes you are demonstrating on each example of work. For the examples of work, you may choose to include a short explanation on how you feel this assignment met one or more of the baccalaureate program outcomes. Reflective Exemplar Think about work situations that you have been involved in during this program and how you acted differently because of something you learned in the program. Write a story about this situation and explain how it demonstrates the way you have changed because of knowledge, experience, insight, or experience gained while you were involved in this program. The exemplar should also demonstrate evidence of value-based nursing and good communication. Your philosophy of nursing could be included here. It would be interesting to see if your values stated in your philosophy were evident in your exemplar. This will be submitted in NU450 Integrated Concepts Development Plan Look back over your portfolio, especially the individual reflective summaries. Identify areas related to the baccalaureate program outcomes that you feel are a weakness. Develop a plan for improving this weakness. This portion of the portfolio should demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning. Your plan should offer specific idea, not general ideas, for continued life-long learning. This will be submitted in NU450 Integrated Concepts Program/Course Evaluation Surveys There are course evaluations in Foliotek for each course where you have the opportunity to evaluate the individual course and your success in the course. In NU450 Integrated Concepts you will be evaluating the entire program and how you were able to meet the program outcomes. Please Note: All outcomes are also assessed by Employer through EMPLOYER SURVEY (post-graduate). Examples of documentation are not inclusive of all assignments required of students. The assignments are subject to change as

6 Academic Portfolio 6 curriculum assignments change. The minimum requirement is to present an assignment(s) for each baccalaureate program outcome.
