School subjects: mon emploi du temps Teaching notes Resources include: A PowerPoint which can be downloaded from www.teachitlanguages.co.uk by entering the resource number 17743 into the quick search box in the top right hand corner of the webpage. Detailed notes for each slide, including answers, can be found below. An interactive task to sort opinion adjectives by whether they are negative or positive. This can be launched from the website above by searching for 17743 and clicking on the yellow star icon. This could be used as a starter or before students do the writing task on slide 26 of the PowerPoint, to give them more ideas for opinions. A vocabulary grid for students to find the English and learn the key words, perhaps as a homework activity (page 1 of this word document). A sample bingo grid and a full list of the vocabulary for the teacher to play loto with the class. Students copy the grid and choose nine of the French words from their vocabulary lists, writing one in each square. The teacher then calls out any of the English meanings from the list and students tick off the right square if they have a match. Remind them to shout loto if they successfully tick off all nine words! This could be a plenary or the starter to the following lesson, after students have done the learning homework. PowerPoint notes: Slide 1 is an animated title page (Les matières) with sound effects. Slides 2-13 introduce some common school subjects (anglais, art dramatique, dessin, français, espagnol, histoire-géo, informatique, maths, musique, sciences, sport, technologie). On the first click, a symbol appears and pupils repeat the word after the teacher. On the next click, the written word appears and pupils repeat again. Slide 14 contains a succession of words for subjects with the letters jumbled. The subject symbols are around the outside. Click when they get each answer and the correct spelling will fade in to replace the anagram. Then ask them which picture the word should go with (they say the letter). When they get this right, click again and the word will float to its correct location. As it arrives, the next anagram appears automatically no need to click. When the last word is placed, there is a burst of applause! For added challenge, you could encourage students to remember whether the words are feminine, masculine or plural. Slide 15-23 What s missing game. Answers for each slide below. Slide 15 français, technologie www.teachitlanguages.co.uk 2013 17743 Page 3 of 4
School subjects: mon emploi du temps Slide 16 anglais Slide 17 dessin, français, histoire-géo Slide 18 sciences, sport Slide 19 dessin, espagnol, histoire-géo Slide 20 maths, art dramatique, anglais Slide 21 art dramatique, français, espagnol, informatique, sciences Slide 22 anglais, art dramatique, histoire-géo, musique, sciences, technologie Slide 23 everything except art dramatique and sciences. Slide 24 shows a timetable with the subjects represented by symbols. Initially pupils have to identify a subject from the day and time given by the teacher (or another pupil). For example: Teacher: mercredi à treize heures trente Pupil: les maths The next three clicks show them how to build up the phrase Mardi / à neuf heures / j ai anglais. Click again and a letter appears behind each symbol on the timetable. The teacher now gives pupils random letters and asks them to construct a sentence based on the model. Slide 25 gives a model for pupils to use when drawing their own timetable. Slide 26 gives a grid to support pupils in writing sentences about their timetable, along with an example showing the words which they will need to adapt. Before doing this you may wish to use the interactive provided where students sort a range of opinions into positive or negative. More able students could be encouraged to look up alternative adjectives in the dictionary for a more creative approach. www.teachitlanguages.co.uk 2013 17743 Page 4 of 4
