COURSE OBJECTIVES The goals of the French 31A course, identified by Alberta Education, are to develop in students: 1. intermediate, to advanced communication skills in French in the areas of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. 2. cultural sensitivity, by developing a greater awareness and appreciation of other cultures and lifestyles. 3. originality and creativity in the language. 4. the ability to acquire, and expand on concepts and generalizations about language and language learning. 5. the desire to improve one's proficiency in the language through enrichment and further study. B. CLASS EXPECTATIONS All students are expected to : 1. cooperate with and be respectful of one another and the teacher 2. be punctual 3. attend all classes unless there is some serious reason to be away. (A note and/or phone-call from your parent(s) / guardian(s) is required to explain all absences. If the absence should occur on an examination day, or when a major assignment is due, a note written by your parent(s) / guardian(s) to Student Services is necessary to explain the absence) 4. speak only French during class time. C. ASSIGNMENTS 1. Usually, some class time will be devoted to assignments. Students may, however, be expected to do an average of 20 minutes of homework per day. 2. Whether or not homework has been assigned, students should get into the habit of reviewing the new concepts taught in class daily. D. ASSESSMENT 1. Often times, an exam will be given at the end of a chapter or new task. 2. Quizzes will be given throughout the term on listening and oral skills, new verbs and/or verb tenses, grammatical structures, or vocabulary. 3. Oral presentations, individual and group, as well as written work will be given throughout the term.

2 4. A final exam, aural, oral and written, will also be given. 5. If a student misses an exam due to illness, his/her parent should phone the school ( ) or the teacher (above) before the exam is written that day. 6. MYP summative assessments: Each Criterion will be evaluated twice during the course. Criterion A Oral communication message and interaction Maximum 8 Criterion B Oral communication language Maximum 8 Criterion C Writing message and organization Maximum 8 Criterion D Writing language Maximum 8 Criterion E Reading Comprehension Maximum 16 E. EVALUATION Evaluation in French is based on the five abilities basic to language learning (aural comprehension, oral production, reading and writing, and cultural understanding). Based on the suggested allotment of time for skill development of the French Curriculum Guide, marks for each report card will be allocated as follows in a cumulative format: 20% oral production -oral presentations -in-class question/answer communication -oral reading -discussion pertaining to a particular reading, or piece of French literature -participation and contribution to in-class discussions and debates. 50% term work -tests (quizzes, unit tests, lab tests) -major assignments (some research involved) -homework assignments -grammar structures -interpretation of, or pertaining to a particular reading, or piece of French Literature -reading comprehension (MYP Criterion E X 2 per year) -in-class essays -prepared oral presentations (individual and group) -written exam: MYP Criterion C & D 5% midterm Multiple choice Written exam: MYP Criterion C & D Oral exam: MYP Criterion A & B 25% final exam 10% Multiple Choice Exam 5% Oral Exam (MYP Criterion A & B) 5% Written Exam (Composition) (MYP Criterion C & D) 5% Listening Exam The Power School Grade Book Codes: Only the following may appear for a student on an assignment in a course.

3 1. a numeric value 2. [Green check mark ] This indicates an assignment has been received 3. Late L (Red L ) this indicates that the assignment is has not been turned in on time. No change to the course grade will result. 4. Exempt EX (Grey EX ) this is used for all items that are not to be included in that student s grade calculation. (see disclaimer) No change to the course grade will result. 5. Missing M (Tan M ) The student has missed an assessment but has the opportunity to complete the required work. The work will be evaluated when submitted according to a timeline set up in consultation between the student and the teacher. This code will calculate as a zero until the code has been replaced with a numeric value. Please Note: A range of assessment information is used to determine a student s final grade. At Archbishop MacDonald High School, individualized assessments provide specific information regarding student progress and overall performance in the course. Student assessment may vary from student to student to adapt to differences in student needs, learning styles, preferences, and paces. Due to special circumstances assessment criteria may vary from student to student in the same course. F. COURSE CONTENT The French 31a course uses the text, Destinations 4 and Destinations 5. A significant amount of vocabulary is covered in each unit. The material studied in each chapter is as follows: Unité d introduction - Prononciation et Poésie Les clichés français (stéreotypes) Unité A La francophonie Les langues et la communication : Destination 4 Les pronoms réféchis L impératif Le pronom d objet indirect: lui / leur Le pronom y et en Les prépositions + pays, provinces, villes Le passé composé Voyages : Destination 5 Le pronom interrogatif lequel Le futur Projet de musique Projet des pays francophones Unité B La santé et les loisirs Le monde qui bouge : Destination 5 L interrogation L imparfait Le conditionnel Unité C Les défis de mon avenir

4 L Avenir : Destination 4 Le futur proche Le futur simple Les pronoms relatifs: lequel / ce qui / ce que / ce dont Carrières : Destination 5 Le pronom relatif lequel Les expressions impersonnelles Film et Projet : Le Café des Rêves Unité D Les sciences et la technologie L homme qui plantait les arbres Le monde autour de nous : Destination 4 Les expressions impersonnelles Le passé composé et l imparfait Le Passé du Conditionnel Unité E Les mythes et les légendes Le Petit Prince par Saint Exupéry Each unit covers a significant amount of new vocabulary, and grammar. This course expands these concepts in further detail and in other texts. Our online resources will be used to enrich this program. The text is also interspersed with a cultural component throughout.
