The dancer Location: on the Passer Promenade (in front of the Kurhaus) Created by the topiary business Romiti & Giusti The horticulture method used for the plant sculpture of the St. Nikolaus cathedral s tower was also chosen for the topiary dancer: the delicate work has a height of 190cm and consists of carefully clipped perennial privet (Ligustrum delavayanum). The dancer stands metaphorically for Merano s status as a cultural town and is reminiscent of the sculptural depiction of four dancing girls on the roof of the Kurhaus. Plant sculptures and topiary in Merano The plant egg Location: on the stairs leading from Corso Libertà to the Passer Promenade (in close proximity to Piazza della Rena) Created by Merano s Town Gardeners (Stadtgärtnerei) and the smiths of the Bauhof smithy About 2.5 meters high, this giant-size plant egg is made of two parts: the lower part is covered with Iceland Moss (Cetraria islandica), which distinguishes itself sharply from local lichens by its light-grey color, while the sculpture s upper part is decorated with blossoming spring and summer plants. The iron frame of the egg was forged in the municipal smithy. The sculpture is set into a small flowerbed. Created with great attention to detail, the plant sculptures of the Merano Spring event show all the creativity and artfulness of their creators. The bell tower of the St. Nikolaus cathedral Location: on Via Cassa di Risparmio Created by the topiary business Romiti & Giusti With the St. Nikolaus cathedral, one of Merano s undisputed landmark buildings gets a sculptural depiction for the Merano Spring event. Based on the cathedral drawings of American illustrator Steven Guarnaccia (see pages 23-25), the renowned Tuscany-based topiary business Romiti & Giusti was commissioned to create an artwork. For the sculpture the horticultural practice of topiary was used, whereby fast-growing perennial plants are planted in a flowerbed or similar container, with the iron frame of the sculpture positioned on the soil. Once the plants start to grow, their foliage is clipped and trimmed to develop and maintain the shape, with the plants eventually filling in the frame (in this case the bell tower of the St. Nikolaus cathedral). The ground around the sculpture s flowerbed will be decorated with green graffiti. Two doves in flight Location: on the Passer Promenade (in front of the Kurhaus) Created by Merano s Town Gardeners (Stadtgärtnerei) and the smiths of the Bauhof smithy This twin sculpture was put on public display at last summer s international Cervia Città Giardino flower show, where it was well received by both critics and visitors. For the 2017 Merano Spring event, the doves are back in Merano and adorn the Passer Promenade. As with the giant-sized plant egg (see above), iron frameworks were covered with Iceland Moss (Cetraria islandica), which needs to be watered regularly to prevent it from drying out. The two sculptures measure 1.5 meters in height each and are positioned together on a two-meter-high pedestal made of cork-oak wood. / 12 / / 13 /
Crocus bulbs for Empress Sissi at Elisabeth Park It is arguably Merano s best-known tribute to Empress Elisabeth of Austria: the Sissi Statue of white marble, created in 1903 by Viennese artist Hermann Klotz to commemorate Sissi s four sojourns in Merano (in 1870, 1871, 1889 and 1897). The monument is located in the Elisabeth Park, at the start of the Summer Promenade. Two pandas Location: on the Passer Promenade (in front of the Kurhaus) Created by: Merano s Town Gardeners (Stadtgärtnerei) and the smiths of the Bauhof smithy Two cute panda sculptures, created with the same technique used for the two doves. One of the panda bears is smaller than the other, with the twin sculpture measuring about one meter in height. The artwork will be on display from late April. For the Merano Spring event, the Sissi Statue will be surrounded by violet crocus flowers, as the Town Gardeners planted crocus bulbs (primarily of the Crocus tommasinianus and Crocus vernus varieties) in the meadows immediately in front and behind the monument. The violet hues of these quintessential spring plants will not only delight the eye, but remind the beholder of Merano s 700 th Anniversary Year (see page 31), violet being one of the colors chosen for the anniversary logo 700xM, alluding to the grape and apple cultivation in Merano s immediate surroundings. In addition to the crocus bulbs mentioned, the Town Gardeners planted 90,000 flower seeds in various locations, with plants of the Fritillaria genus deserving special mention: These flowers will bloom in May on the Paeonienhang, a slope located on the Summer Promenade, by the Roman Bridge. Eagle, snake, woodpecker and Atlas Location: on the Gilf Promenade Created by Merano s Town Gardeners (Stadtgärtnerei) and the smiths of the Bauhof smithy These four plant sculptures are located on the Gilf Promenade, a trail running along the bank of the Passer River, featuring numerous subtropical plants and a great view of the Gilf Gorge. The frames for the sculptures were created in the municipal smithy and subsequently filled with mosses, ferns and cushion plants. Next to Atlas holding the Earth on his shoulders, to an eagle and a snake, a woodpecker adorns a cedar and makes for a valuable store of raw materials for real woodpeckers building nests. Two horses jumping over a hurdle Location: on the Passer Promenade (in front of the Kurhaus) Created by: Merano s Town Gardeners (Stadtgärtnerei) With its Racecourse (see page 22), Merano has an internationally acclaimed venue for horse races. The undisputed highlight of its racing season is the weekend of the Merano Grand Prix in September (this year on September 23 and 24). In tribute to this prestigious event, the Town s Gardeners created a sculptural depiction of two riders on horseback jumping a hurdle. The artwork is made of plant material exclusively, with each figure measuring about two meters in height. While this twin topiary is normally put on display in the weeks leading up to the Grand Prix, this year it already adorns the Passer Promenade from late May. / 14 / / 15 /
The Pallet Lounge created by the South Tyrolean Gardener s Association at Piazza Terme South Tyrol s gardeners showed their outstanding ability to create eye-catching decorations out of inconspicuous everyday objects last year by setting up an urban gardening project for the Merano Spring event. This year, five gardeners of the Merano area will again put their creativity to the test, creating a lounge-like furniture arrangement of densely planted pallets in time for the opening day of the 2017 Merano Spring (April 7). The Pallet Lounge will consist of a table, some benches and other slightly elevated seating opportunities. It will add a dash of spring color to central Piazza Terme. The plants chosen for the artwork are spring plants with pastel blooms like those of the Nemesia genus or Iceland Poppy (Papaver naudicale) and Wallflowers (Erysium cheiri). The Pallet Lounge will be on display until mid-may. The project is organized by the following companies, in collaboration with the Merano Tourist Office: Further attractions of the Merano Spring event» GrünKultur Luther (Merano)» Gärtnerei Reichert (Merano)» Gärtnerei Waldner (Scena)» Gärtnerei Wielander (Merano)» Gärtnerei Zöschg (Postal) The letter case created by the Laimburg School For the third consecutive year, students of the Laimburg School for fruit-growing, viticulture and horticulture created a land art object for the Merano Spring event. For inspiration the twelve horticulture and floristry students involved turned to Steven Guarnaccia s illustrated children s book Collecting Merano (see pages 23-25), a tale of two young collectors named Ava and Otto, who decide to take a stroll through Merano together. For their letter case, the students and teachers used natural materials and plastic to design twelve caskets as receptacles for collected items of various sorts. The letter case itself is made of larch trunks; a cavity cut into each trunk allowed a student to design it according to his or her ideas. In the artwork, individual design is therefore juxtaposed with a collective creative effort (the larch trunks joined up with plastic tubes). The finished letter case will be on display from April 4 at Merano s Marconi Park (former mini-golf facility on Via F. Innerhofer). / 16 / / 17 /
The flowerbeds designed by Salzburg s Town Gardeners on the Passer Promenade from late April Merano and Salzburg became twin towns in 2000. The exchange between both towns has been fertile since, especially in the cultural field. However, it has also led to the establishment of economic and trade relations, to joint tourism projects and a close cooperation on issues pertaining to the fields of administration and the protection of the environment. It has also fostered the exchange and understanding between the inhabitants of Merano and Salzburg. The 2017 Merano Spring event makes a valuable contribution to this prospering partnership. Notably, Salzburg s Town Gardeners were invited by their South Tyrolean colleagues to design the two central flowerbeds on the Passer Promenade, in front of the main entrance to the Kurhaus. They opted for floral depictions of two major tourist attractions of the Salzburg area. The first flowerbed will be reminiscent of the well-known garden of Mirabell Palace, with roses bringing to mind the palace s rose garden. A small fountain decorated with figurines and ornamented tiles enhance this flowerbed arrangement. Even more striking will be the second flowerbed based on the park of Hellbrunn Palace, with a reproduction of the famous Germaul as centerpiece: This grotesque face made of copper has huge ears and rolling eyes. Its mouth collects water; once it is full, the face pokes its tongue, thereby allowing the water to run out. The one-meter-high reproduction of the original Germaul - which can be admired in all its hideous beauty in the Neptune Grotto at Hellbrunn Palace - was a gift made by Salzburg s Town Gardeners to their Merano colleagues during a visit. Further attractions of the Merano Spring event Three important parts of Merano s town center - the Portici Arcades, Via Cassa di Risparmio and Piazza della Rena - are embellished to highlight the beauty of spring. The Portici Arcades: Merano s main shopping street offers family-owned, old-established shops next to trendy fashion boutiques and outlet stores. It consists of two rows of houses with arcades, elegant bay windows and numerous archways, that are separated by a pedestrian passageway. For the Merano Spring event, the Portici Arcades will be decorated with flower garlands and white umbrellas sporting yellow roses. The umbrellas will be illuminated at night. Via Cassa di Risparmio: As the location chosen for the topiary bell tower of the St. Nikolaus cathedral (see page 12), Via Cassa di Risparmio is one of the main sites of this year s Merano Spring event. The ground around the sculpture s flowerbed will be enhanced by graffiti of the cathedral and the sleeve image of Steven Guarnaccia s book (see pages 23-25). The color used for the spray painted graffiti contains yoghurt and pulverized cellulose; it is solvent-free and fully biocompatible. The graffiti will be visible starting from April 7 until the end of May. Piazza della Rena: On this public square featuring tourist attractions like Kallmünz Castle, deck chairs will be provided to those wishing to relax in the sun. Moreover, a bookshelf designed for the Bookcrossing project will be displayed there. Anyone may read the books to their heart s content or leave books on the shelves. The Bookcrossing initiative was started two years ago by Merano s Town Library. / 18 / / 19 /
The new access to the Passer River The new trail connecting the Gilf Promenade and the Lazag recreational area For the spring season, a new access to the Passer River was created along the Winter Promenade, by the Wandelhalle arcade. This new Passer Terrace serves to highlight the central role played by water for Merano. Some medium-sized stones, placed in two rows as small steps, take to the riverbank and invite passers-by to stop and relax. Another access to the Passer River was created in July 2012 and is located at Piazza Terme. These three landscaped Passer Terraces offer green lawns and are ideal spots for contemplation and relaxation. They are popular meeting places and hangouts in the summer months. Both projects are part of an Interreg program funded by the European Regional Development Fund. Located within walking distance of the town center, the Gilf Promenade and the Lazag recreational area are prime examples of Merano s sustainable urban planning and the incorporation of green areas into its urban landscape. For this spring season, a new trail connecting the Gilf Promenade and the Lazag recreational area was created along the left bank of the Passer River. At just a few meters distance from the bridge over the Gilf Gorge, a flight of steps leads up to a platform and a bridge marking the trail s start and offering splendid views of the Zenoburg Castle. The path itself runs underneath the stone bridge into the Passeiertal Valley and continues - along Merano s town limit - on the bike route to San Leonardo/St. Leonhard, all the way to the Lazag recreational area, which is popular with locals and tourists alike. Merano and its water In Merano, water is a ubiquitous element. The town is located at the confluence of the Passer and Etsch rivers. 95% of its drinking water comes from water sources - a percentage few towns can match. Moreover, Merano features 69 public drinking fountains; at its thermal baths, water is a key component of wellness packages and spa offers. The popular Waalweg trails run along ancient irrigation channels, forming a dense network in Merano and Environs. They are scenic hiking options leading through untouched nature. The Gilf Promenade The Gilf Promenade is one of Merano s most romantic walks. It ends at a gorge, where the Passer River enters Merano. The walk is particularly interesting from a botanical point of view, since it features numerous subtropical plants. Near the top, it meets a winding path that leads to the Gunpowder Tower and the Tappeinerweg Trail. On the opposite bank of the Passer River, the Gilf Promenade connects with the Summer Promenade. Since 1997, the Gilf Promenade features verses of well-known poets (e.g. Christian Morgenstern, Rainer Maria Rilke, Ezra Pound, Giuseppe Conte and Antonio Manfredi) inscribed onto the wooden benches lining the walking path. Four large-scale plant figures can be admired at the Golf Gorge, with the depiction of Atlas holding up the celestial sphere deserving special mention (see page 14). / 20 / / 21 /
Finally open to the public: The Poloplatz (polo field) area of the Merano Racecourse The racecourse is one of Merano s landmarks and one of the town s main sports and entertainment venues. A part of the racecourse s premises (known locally as Poloplatz) will be open to the public for the first time this spring, during the afternoon hours (except for racedays). Between the tracks where normally horses and jockeys train, there is a spacious meadow surrounded by a circular hurdle. To give the area a colorful and dynamic look, flowerbeds were planted in some parts of it. A circular path leading round the area invites to take a stroll or maybe do some jogging or Nordic walking. In the coming years, the polo field will be equipped with further amenities. It is a quiet haven in the heart of town, an ideal place for families and for those seeking relaxation. Sports enthusiasts can indulge in some physical exercise there whilst enjoying the spectacular mountain scenery surrounding Merano. The access to the area is in Via Enrico Toti. Collecting Merano The illustrated children s book Collecting Merano Every year, the Merano Spring event s varied program includes the publication of an illustrated children s book, followed by workshops and performances directly inspired by the book s plot and presented by itinerant pop-up ateliers. Horseracing at the Merano Racecourse The Merano Racecourse is widely considered one of Italy s most important venues for hurdle racing, and the country s most important for steeple chases. The season generally runs from May to the end of October. On Easter Monday (this year on April 17), the Merano Racecourse hosts the traditional Haflinger Country Horse Races.» Full season schedule and more information at www.meranogaloppo.it Collecting Merano was written and illustrated by Steven Guarnaccia. It is the third in a series of books published for the Merano Spring project, with support from Merano s illustrated children s book archive Ópla. Each year a different author is asked to provide his or her own interpretation of Merano s extraordinary landscape through the format of the illustrated children s book. The American Steven Guarnaccia follows British illustrator Harriet Russell, who designed the book Eleanor and the Eagle for the 2015 Merano Spring festival, and German artist Katrin Stangl, illustrator of last year s tale Luca at the Museum. Both books will be reprinted this spring. In Harriet Russell s book, a little girl named Eleanor flies to Merano on the back of an eagle. She explores the town with her new friend and enjoys Merano s clean air and lush vegetation, its magnificent surroundings and rich local tradition. A small creature named Luca and living with a bunch of friends along the Gilf Promenade was the main character of Katrin Stangl s tale, which took the reader to different locations - from the aforementioned Gilf Promenade to the scenic alleys of Merano s town center and to the Palais Mamming Museum. Where to buy Collecting Merano:» Merano Tourist Office, Corso Libertà 45» Merano Town Library, Via delle Corse 1» Palais Mamming Museum, Piazza Duomo 6» Centro per la Cultura/Kulturzentrum, Via Cavour 1» In various shops in the town center The book will be sold in three monolingual editions (Italian, German, English); Price: 10.00. / 22 / / 23 /
Collecting Merano The pop-up ateliers The story Ava and Otto are cousins. However, while Ava is from Rome, Otto is from Berlin. Both are passionate collectors: Ava collects the leaves of rare plants and whistles, whereas Otto is always searching for seashells, bottle caps and small reproductions of churches. They meet in Merano and decide to pursue their hobby together. The reader follows Ava and Otto through Merano, getting to know major tourist attractions like the Palais Mamming Museum and the Tappeinerweg Trail with the Gunpowder Tower. Several workshops for families that are directly inspired by the book Collecting Merano will take place in different locations. Itinerant pop-up ateliers, accompanied by a mobile cart, will set up entertaining, experimental and highly creative performances. Steven Guarnaccia will present a workshop in Merano on April 7. The archive for children s books Ópla The author: Steven Guarnaccia Steven Guarnaccia is an illustrator and designer, and Associate Professor of Illustration at Parsons The New School for Design, where he was the director of the Illustration Program from 2004 to 2011. The Meran007 video mapping show Merano s 700 th Anniversary Year In 1317, Merano was granted the status of town by Henry of Carinthia. The 700 th anniversary of this historic event is marked all year - under the overall coordination of the Merano Municipality - with a richly varied program of events. The program titled 700xM was planned and created for locals and visitors alike. It comprises conferences, concerts, musical performances, exhibitions and much more besides. Merano s schools, clubs and institutions all made active contributions to the program. Entente Florale Europe 2015 Merano wins the Gold Award in the 2015 Entente Florale Europe contest Wide green spaces, well-groomed promenades, and artfully designed flowerbeds are a distinctive feature of Merano s urban landscape. Moreover, with the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, the town boasts the International Garden of the Year 2013 and one of the world s most beautiful attractions of its kind (see page 26). Merano s green heritage has strongly contributed to the town s renown and has increasingly garnered praise internationally. In September 2015, Merano won the Gold Award in the Entente Florale Europe, the highest honor bestowed in that international competition. A prestigious accolade, given that the contest rates towns and small cities throughout Europe by taking into consideration a multitude of factors (e.g. measures taken to reduce air pollution, the management and maintenance of the local green spaces, the educational efforts made to raise awareness for environmental issues). The Entente is organized annually by the Association Européenne pour le Fleurissement et le Paysage (AEFP). Merano was eligible to participate in the Entente after winning the national Comuni Fioriti competition in 2014. The positive verdict reached by the AEFP s jury during a two-day stay in Merano in July clinched the town s entry into the final stage of the contest for Italy and, ultimately, its win of the Gold Award.» Find out more at www.700xm.it Meran007 - Music Light History Presented at Merano s Puccini Theater, the Meran007 video mapping show vividly evokes the most thrilling moments in Merano s 700-year history. The audiovisual performance is accompanied by an original soundtrack, written expressly for the Meran007 project. During the thirty-minute show, the spectators witness the first settlements on today s Merano area and experience devastating catastrophes from up close. However, the audience also witnesses the many positive moments in Merano s history, the way in which the town and its population managed to overcome all sorts of difficulties and setbacks. Local products: Only locally grown or handcrafted goods may be sold at the Merano Market. The market actively encourages farmer-to-consumer direct marketing. The range of goods on sale at the Market Market includes seasonal farm products, smoked bacon (Speck) and meat specialties, wild berries, wine, spirits and bread. Handcrafted items made of wool and felt, lace and jewelry, glass objects, and aromatic herbs are also available there. MM - The Merano Market Seasonal variety: A section of the market is reserved for infrequent market vendors next to the stalls for regular vendors (those present every market day). This ensures a diversity and variety of products which change depending on the season and the individual s rate of production. Quality: The stall holders selection by a specially appointed committee was based on a set of criteria defined in the market guidelines. Regular controls and assessments will ensure a high level of quality. Held under the motto Local by nature, the Merano Market runs every Saturday from March 25 to October 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on the section of the Passer Promenade leading up to Ponte della Posta (until May) and on the pedestrian section of upper Corso Libertà (from May). Design: The market stalls were designed by Martino Gamper, a designer born and raised in Merano, who has since made a name for himself internationally - in 2014 he was named Icon Awards Designer of the Year. His design concept for the Merano Market creates a dialogue between an urban context and South Tyrolean traditions. The Merano Market provides locals and guests with a highly attractive shopping experience. It is set apart by the following features: Also weekly: the Farmers Market The traditional farmers market with freshly harvested South Tyrolean produce also takes place every Saturday (8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon) on Via Galilei. / 34 / / 35 /
The following personalities were chosen for depiction in 2015: Franz Kafka (1883-1924) writer; artist: Urs Lüthi (Switzerland) Antonio Manfredi (1912-2001) poet and painter; artist: Aron Demetz (South Tyrol/Italy) Emma Hellenstainer (1817-1904) tourist pioneer in Tyrol; artist: Stephan Balkenhol (Germany). Human Shapes The Human Shapes project was started in 2015 and embraces a wide temporal arch. It draws back to the theme of the plastic representation of the human shape, although it supports a free interpretation through contemporary art s expressive means. The sculptures that consciously tear down classic plastic forms become the site of memory and take on a symbolic meaning. The Human Shapes project has given life to an (as yet unfinished) open-air art gallery that unfolds along the Passer Promenade, in the stretch between Ponte Teatro and the iron railway bridge. A total of ten personalities from the past, who made a significant contribution to Merano s cultural life during the course of their lives, will be depicted for the project. Three new artworks were created last year by as many contemporary artists: Silvius Magnago (1914-2010) politician and father of South Tyrol s autonomy; artist: Tony Cragg (Great Britain) Piero Richard (1899-1967) businessman and fervent promoter of the Merano Racecourse; artist: Wil-ma Kammerer (South Tyrol/Italy) Rina Riva (1922-2010) artist and professor of experimental graphic art; artist: Walter Moroder (South Tyrol/Italy) A further enlargement of the gallery is planned for autumn 2017. The new sculptures will be dedicated to the Russian musician and composer Natalie Prawossudowitsch (1899-1988), to local filmmaker Bruno Jori (1922-1970), to the graphic designer and painter Franz Lenhart (1898-1992), and to Czechoslovakia-born artist Gina Klaber Thusek (1900-1983). The Human Shapes project has been conceived to have a long-lasting impact in Merano and to provide inspiration and fill gaps in the town s collective memory. Trails and hikes in Merano The Passer Promenade The Passer Promenade is named after the river that crosses the town, dividing it in two. The old Kurpromenade, the area between Ponte della Posta and Ponte Teatro, forms the upper half of the route. Outdoor cafés, palm trees, plant sculptures and the splendid Art Nouveau Kurhaus give this main esplanade a breezy, carefree air that harkens back to the turn of the century when spa tourists soaked in the sunshine and fresh air right here in this very spot. The lower half of the promenade stretches to a railway bridge, towards the confluence of the Passer and Etsch rivers; on the way, there are several historical buildings including the Lutheran church Christuskirche and the sculptures of the Human Shapes contemporary art project (see pages 36-37). The whole Passer Promenade is manageable with a stroller. Beyond Ponte della Posta, the Passer Promenade connects with the Winter Promenade and, thereafter, with the Gilf Promenade (see page 21). Sissi s Path This evocative route leads past Austrian Empress Elisabeth s favorite spots in Merano. The charming Habsburg sovereign, affectionately nicknamed Sissi, came to Merano four times in the second half of the 19 th century for health treatments. The trail named in her honor leads to the town center from the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, past eleven sights and tourist attractions. From the castle that towers over the botanical garden, the path reaches Pienzenau Castle and Rubein Castle, the Reichenbach residence and Piazza Fontana, then Rottenstein Castle and the Bavaria Hotel, eventually descending towards the Passer River and crossing it on the Stone Footbridge, before continuing on the Winter Promenade to the Wandelhalle arcade; on the opposite side of the river there is the Elisabeth Park with the Sissi Statue. Sissi s Path is manageable with a stroller. An information leaflet about the route is available from the Merano Tourist Office (Corso Libertà 45). The Tappeinerweg Trail The Tappeinerweg Trail runs above Merano from east to west. In addition to excellent sunlight, the path offers sweeping views of the town below, the Merano Valley Basin and the Etsch Valley. Franz Tappeiner (1816-1902), a spa doctor and medical researcher from the Vinschgau Valley, created the promenade and donated to Merano. The four-kilometer-long path splits off from the Gilf Promenade and follows the curve of the Küchelberg mountain until it reaches Gratsch. In addition to typical local vegetation, Mediterranean and exotic plant species (e.g. eucalyptus, lotus, pine, various species of palms and bamboo, cactus, agave, magnolias and olive trees) are planted along the path. There are numerous access points from Merano s town center: the steps leading up from behind the St. Nikolaus cathedral, the Schlehdorfsteig slope on Via Verdi, a winding path from the Gilf Promenade (leading past the Gunpowder Tower) and from the Gratsch district. The whole trail is manageable with a stroller. The Prince s Castle Another access point to the Tappeinerweg Trail is a winding path on Via Galilei, by the valley station of the Merano-Tirolo Chairlift. Located in close proximity to it is one of South Tyrol s best preserved castles, the Princes Castle, which houses valuable furnishings and exhibitions. The Prince s Castle will be open to the public from April 11 (Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; on Sundays and holidays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). / 38 / / 39 /
The Maiser Waalweg trail Merano is surrounded by a dense network of Waalweg trails, which run alongside man made water channels designed for irrigation. These paths are easily reachable from town and offer spectacular scenic views. Strolling along a Waalweg trail is quite relaxing since the grade is rarely very steep. One of the most scenic Waalweg trails is the Maiser Waalweg which connects Obermais and Saltusio/Saltaus, a village located at the entrance to the Passeiertal Valley; the channel runs along the left bank of the Passer River. The starting point for this Waalweg trail is at Planta Castle (at the intersection of Via Planta and Via Belvedere); the path gradually heads into a forest of dense and broadleaved trees along rocky hillsides. About two thirds of the way in, there is the little Waalerhaus hut, the water wheel of which signals the smooth flow of water. The trail ends at Torgglerhof Farm. Most of the Maiser Waalweg is flat and nicely shaded; it is an especially nice place for a summer stroll because of its proximity to the cooling river. Length: 8 km. Walking Time: about 2.5 hours An information brochure about the Waalweg trails is available from the Merano Tourist Office, at a price of 2.50. For kids: playgrounds in Merano Named South Tyrol s most child-friendly locality of the year 2017, Merano has plenty of public playgrounds where kids can let off some steam. The playgrounds are located in Elisabeth Park on the Summer Promenade, on the Passer Promenade across from the Merano Tourist Office, in the park behind the Lutheran church Christuskirche on the Passer Promenade, in Maiser Park in Merano s Maia Alta/Obermais district, in Rosegger Park on Via San Giorgio in Maia Alta, next to the parish church in Maia Bassa/Untermais, in Merano s Texel Park on Via Monte Tessa and on Via Marlengo, near the gardening shop.» Info: Merano Tourist Office, corso Libertà 45, tel. +39 0473 272000, www.merano.eu Bike paths in and around Merano A dense network of bike paths radiates outwards from Merano. There are ideal routes for recreational cyclists and families, while serious cyclists will find challenging tours for road bikes and mountain bikes alike through mountain passes and along mountain slopes. The Vinschgau Valley and the bike & train combination Starting from Merano, cyclists can explore the Vinschgau, a sun-kissed valley located west of Merano, while taking advantage of a beneficial combination: bike and train. The Vinschgau Valley Line, known as the Vinschger Bahn in German, offers a spectacular landscape. At the terminal station, located in Malles/Mals (56 km from Merano), one can pick up a bike at the local Südtirol Rad rental point, and then ride all the way back to Merano on a well-maintained bike path. Should the return journey prove too long, cyclists can return the bike at any Südtirol Rad point along the way and continue their return journey to Merano, relaxing on the train. Bike points are available at the train stations in Spondigna/Spondinig, Silandro/Schlanders, Laces/ Latsch, Naturno/Naturns and Merano. Transport of private bicycles: An additional bike-transport ticket must be secured in order to transport your own bike on the train. Regional trains, however, are only equipped to transport 15 to 18 bicycles. If the available spots are already occupied, boarding of additional bicycles may be denied. At the train stations in Merano, Marlengo/Marling and Lagundo/Algund, boarding the Vinschgau Valley Line with a bicycle may not permitted from May to October (at certain times). Info: Tel: +39 0473 201500 Other tours: The Etsch Bike Route from Merano to Bolzano/Bozen (Distance: about 30 km; altitude gain: negligible; offers the possibility to make the return trip by train) and the Passeiertal Valley Route from Merano to San Leonardo/St. Leonhard (Distance: about 20 km; altitude gain: 370 m). Free use of bicycles: There are two points in town where bicycles are available to use free of charge, both of which are open daily from April 13 to October 14 (hours of operation are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). There are mountain bikes available, as well as road bikes for women and children, at the pick-up points on Via Piave beside Merano s Thermal Baths and near the train station. Safety helmets and child seats are also available. Use of bicycles is free of charge: all that is required is a valid ID card and a security deposit of 5.00, which is refunded upon return of the bicycles. The bikemobil Card combines two different offers: unlimited travel on all of South Tyrol s means of public transport (buses, regional trains, participating cable cars) on one, three or seven consecutive days and a day trip on a borrowed bicycle. The bikemobil Card is available at all points of sale for South Tyrol s public transport system (train and bus stations), at tourist offices and bike points. It costs either 24.00, 30.00 or 34.00 depending on the card s validity.» Find out more at www.bzbga.it and www.suedtirol-rad.it / 40 / / 41 /
Hiking options in Scena On the Maiser Waalweg trail to Merano The starting point for this hike is the village center of Scena. From there, the route continues on the Katnauweg and the Leiterweg, the latter footpath leading past the Innerleiter hotel - just above Ofenbaur Restaurant - to the Maiser Waalweg trail. This mostly flat trail continues south to Planta Castle. Via the Schönblickstraße road, one can hike all the way to Merano s town center on the Vergilstraße and the Lazagsteig. Walking time: about 1 hour Scena/Schenna The Höfeweg hike in the Schennaberg area The Höfeweg trail above Scena connects several farmhouses. Along the trail, hikers get a firsthand impression of the cultural life and everyday work on these secluded mountain farms whilst enjoying splendid views of Merano and the surrounding mountains. A road (the Oberverdinserstraße) runs from Verdines/Verdins to the Gasthof Hasenegg inn, before leading past five farm houses (Vallplatz, Holzner, Zmailer, Rast and Salfgut) to San Giorgio/St. Georgen. Walking time: about 2 hours; altitude gain: 300 m The Spring Bench at the mausoleum of Schenna Castle The village of Scena/Schenna has created a bench for the Merano Spring event titled Spring Bench. It is a throwback to the benches with armrest bars once popular on horse-drawn carriages. The colors used for the bench are reminiscent of those of the blueish-grey Austro-Hungarian army uniforms that were worn with black boots. From Scena to Trauttmansdorff Castle This easy hike leads from Scena to the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle on Merano s eastern outskirts. The trail s first segment runs past Goyen Castle to Vernaun Castle, on the paths marked no. 3 and 3A. At Vernaun Castle, the trail branches off to the right, running along the Naifbach stream to Labers Castle. The main road then leads south past Rametz Castle, all the way to the lovely Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle (see pages 26-27). Walking time: about 1¼ hours The bench and some chairs will be positioned by the mausoleum of Schenna Castle, on the most exposed edge of the church hill, amidst a flowering sea of tulips and spring vegetation, inviting the visitor to sit down and contemplate the awakening of nature in spring. The location chosen for the bench also offers sweeping views of Merano and Environs. Another sight to behold is the colorfully planted bench created by the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle (see pages 26-27) on display in the village center of Scena. Both benches are part of the Artbank project started in 2011. The eight benches hitherto created by local artists can all be found in Scena. / 42 / / 43 /

Hiking options in Tirolo The Falkner Promenade This lovely, one-kilometer long promenade runs below the village center of Tirolo to Tyrol Castle. Excellent sunlight and spectacular views of the Etschtal Valley account for the trail s popularity. The quiet footpath was created in 1972/73 by Hans Norman Falkner (1906-1988) and redesigned in 2016. In a Mediterranean-style setting of olive trees, cypresses and rosemary, walkers can since enjoy sweeping views of Merano and the Etschtal Valley. Walking time: about 15 minutes Tirolo/Dorf Tirol Walking from Merano to Tirolo Tirolo is accessible from Merano via the Tiroler Steig. The starting point for this route is behind St. Nikolaus cathedral (Piazza Duomo), where steps lead up to the Tappeinerweg Trail. The Tiroler Steig branches off at Saxifraga Café and runs all the way to the Segenbühelweg. Thereafter, the main road leads to the village center of Tirolo. Walking time: about 50 minutes The Panoramaweg trail This trail offers sweeping 360 views of the Passeiertal Valley, of Scena and the Etschtal Valley. Its starting point is Tirolo s tourist office; from there, the main road descends to the Gartner Hotel. There the route continues on the Segenbühelweg to the Friedenskapelle chapel, and thereafter on the Knappensteig to the Zenoburg volunteer fire department. On the right, the Zenobergstraße then leads to Küchelberg Haus. Below Küchelberg Haus, there is an access point to the Tappeinerweg Trail on the right. A (rather steep) slope winds to the Segenbühelweg from there, before meeting the main road to the village center of Tirolo. Walking time: about 90 minutes The eagle sculpture in Tirolo From early April to the end of 2017, the village center of Tirolo will feature a privet topiary eagle set in front of the tourist office. The depiction of a landing eagle has an impressive wingspan of 3.5 meters. The eagle has historically been a symbol of Tyrol: The Dukes of Tyrol residing at the eponymous castle used it for their land s coat of arms. An early depiction of the eagle is preserved in the chapel of Tyrol Castle. The village s coat of arms equally features a red eagle. In addition, the Bird Care Centre on the hill upon which Tyrol Castle is perched is a refuge for owls and other birds of prey (including eagles), which can be watched from a close range during daily flight demonstrations (see page 49). The Kulturweg trail The starting point for this trail is Tirolo s tourist office, with the route s first segment running to the Knappenloch tunnel via the Kirchplatz square and the Schlossweg trail. At the foot of the earth pillars (Erdpyramiden), a short and rather steep slope leads up to a kiosk. Tyrol Castle is located to the left; the route, however, continues to the right, past Leisterhof farmhouse and on a narrow footpath to a fork in the trail. The Jausenstation Weißgütl inn is accessible from there via the Schneeweisshof driveway. 300 meters past Obertzbauerhof farm, a small forest path leads to Ötzbauerhof farm, where the hike continues towards Thurnstein Castle. On the short ascent to the Schlossweg trail, the route leads past St. Peter to Tyrol Castle. The return hike follows the Schlossweg and the Falkner Promenade. Walking time: about 2 hours / 46 / / 47 /
The Weinweg trail The trail s first section leads from Tirolo s tourist office on the main road to the mini-golf facility and the narrow Keschtngasse alley. Road signs then point the way up to the Falkner Promenade and the Doss overlook. From there, the Schlossweg footpath runs to the village center; there, the main road leads back to the trail s starting point. Walking time: about 45 minutes Tourist attractions in Tirolo Tyrol Castle Tyrol Castle is the most historically significant castle in South Tyrol. Its owners, the Counts of Tyrol, reigned over the eponymous land for almost a millennium. The castle s origins stretch back into the late 12 th century. The Herrschaftsweg trail This magnificent hiking route offers sweeping views of the Etschtal Valley and runs above Tyrol Castle to the Farmerkreuz. From Tyrol Castle, the path marked no. 26 leads to Vellau (past the Schneeweisshof Jausenstation inn) and branches off to the right at the fork in the Herrschaftsweg trail. The next segment ascends through mixed woodland to an altitude of 850 meters, where sweeping views of Merano and the surrounding mountains are offered. After about a kilometer, the route continues to the left, on the path marked no 23A, leading over steps to Innerfarmerhof Café. Below the Culinaria im Farmerkreuz restaurant, the way no. 23B leads back to the starting point through mixed forest und orchards. Walking time: about 3 hours The castle houses artworks and objects of high historical and artistic value, such as marble portals dating from the Romanesque period, early-gothic wall paintings, an altar built in the Gothic style and Tyrol s oldest glass painting. Tyrol Castle now houses the South Tyrolean Museum of History. Its permanent exhibition offers an overview of South Tyrol s eventful history, from its beginnings to modern times.» Info: www.castel.tirolo.it The Bird Care Center The Bird Care Center is located on the hill upon which Tyrol Castle is perched. It offers a perfect environment for the care of injured birds of prey. The raptors are kept in special aviaries until they are healthy and ready to be released back into the wild again. Flight demonstrations are organized twice a day, at 11:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., giving visitors the chance to watch these fascinating predators in flight.» Info: www.gufyland.com» Info: Tirolo Tourist Office, Via Principale 31, I-39019 Tirolo Tel. +39 0473 923314, www.dorf-tirol.it / 48 / / 49 /
Hiking options in Naturno The 1000-Stufen-Schlucht (Gorge of 1,000 Steps) on the Merano High Mountain Trail The starting point for this hike is the mountain station of the Texelbahn Cable Car in Parcines/ Partschins. After leading up a few meters in altitude to the Gasthof Giggelberg inn, the route continues west on the Merano High Mountain Trail (path no. 24). In this segment, the trail runs at an average height of 1,500 meters. There is a significant altitude gain involved, however, when descending the two gorges after the Hochforch inn, i.e. the Brunnental and the Lahnbach-Tal with the 1000-Stufen-Schlucht. Naturno/Naturns Iron and wooden stairs, as well as steps hewn into the stone, lead down into the gorge. Ascending it requires a good physical condition. Beyond the Hofschank Pirchhof inn, the rest of the trail to the Linthof is flat. There are several inns en route. The path no. 10 leads to the mountain station of the Unterstell Cable Car in Naturns/Naturno. After a cable car ride to Kompatsch, the hike continues either on the main road or past the church and the Lindenhof Hotel on the St.-Zeno-Straße, and through the Feldgasse alley to the village center of Naturno. Walking time: about 3¾ hours; altitude gain: about 300 m; length: about 9 km The farmhouse hike (Höfewanderung) on the Naturnser Sonnenberg Starting on the Schlossweg path, the trail then branches off towards Schwalbennest and runs past a small cable car to the Höfl and Unterstell farmhouses. The latter farmhouse is also easily accessible with the Sonnenberg Cable Car. The route then continues on the paths no. 10A and no. 10 to Patleid, and further up to Lint. There the trail branches off to the right and connects with the Merano High Mountain Trail (path no. 24) to reach Innerforch, Galmein and Grub. The 3 Mountain bikers plant sculpture in Naturno As its name suggests, this artwork depicts three life-sized mountain bikers. It was expressly created for the Merano Spring event and installed in the roundabout at the eastern village entrance of Naturno/Naturns. Its subject matter refers to the many popular bike routes in the Naturno area, running across the valley floor or along the mountain passes above the village. The sculpture is meant to encourage drivers to explore the many cycling options Naturno offers. The farmhouses, which line this particular walk, are just a few of the fifty-six mountain farms located in the Naturno area. Most of them are working farms as well as inns. The farms owners offer hikers the opportunity to see how they live and work. Visitors are welcome to watch the women bake bread, to help with the haymaking or to learn how to mill flour. The final section of the Höfewanderung is rather challenging and descends on path no. 6 from the Grubhof farm down to Naturno. Walking time: about 4 hours; altitude gain: 1,481 m; length: about 12,9 km The three cyclists were created by the Tuscany-based topiary business F.lli Baldi. Three evergreen privet shrubs of the Ligustrum genus (Ligustrum ionandrum) were planted and, once they started to grow, their foliage was clipped and trimmed to develop the shape of the three cyclists. The topiary will be on display in the roundabout until early June; after the Merano Spring event s end the artwork will be installed in various green areas in Naturno. / 50 / / 51 /
The Stabener and Tscharser Waalweg trails The starting point for this hike is the Tschars bus stop. From there, the path no. 3 leads to the Tscharser Waalweg trail, with the route s first segment leading on the Waalweg to the Sonnenhof inn. The path no. 1A continues from there to Juval Castle, the summer residence of wellknown mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The castle is well worth a visit and houses an extensive collection of exhibits from Tibet, a gallery full of paintings of mountain scenes, a collection of masks from all over the world and many more items of interest. A paved road leads down from Juval Castle to the Schlosswirt farmhouse, which offers a cozy Stube (i.e. a traditional wood-paneled living room), a wooden-beamed attic with enormous paintings of the Yao gods and a further unique collection of art from Tibet. The farmhouse also has a cellar cut from the rock of the mountainside. After a short rest, the hike can be continued up towards the Tscharser Waalweg, which leads to the Sonnenhof farm. After a short descent, the path no. 1 connects with the Stabener Waalweg trail, leading to Falzrohr and, past the Himmelreich Guesthouse, back to Tschars. Walking time: about 5 hours; length: about 15.3 km The Rittersteig trail This trail s first segment leads on the Bahnhofstraße from the village center towards the sports ground and then up towards the Jesus Besinnungsweg, a meditation path. The path marked no. 1 thereafter follows the Rittersteig to reach Waldheim near Dornsberg Castle, and continues through the Hilbertal Valley to the Alpine-Well-Fit-Parcours in Plaus. This keep-fit route has five newly equipped relaxation areas and is the perfect place for a few open-air fitness exercises. The route then continues along the Gröbenweg to reach the center of Plaus where wellknown local artist Luis Stephan Stecher has created a series of eighteen colorful paintings on the walls of the village cemetery. The easy walk back to Naturno leads along the banks of the Etsch River. Walking time: about 2½ hours; altitude gain: 376 m; length: about 11 km Bike routes around Naturno The cycle tour Naturno-Merano From the village of Naturno, the Etsch Bike Route leads on the 2000-year-old Via Claudia Augusta to Merano. This Roman road runs north to south, past orchards and cultural attractions, offering cyclists a pleasant way to get to Merano. Until Tel, the bike path is mostly flat; afterwards it descends all the way to Merano via Lagundo and the Trauttmansdorff Throne (an observation deck overlooking the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle). The Bike Highline Meran/o The Bike Highline Meran/o connects the pastures on the Nörderberg mountain, allowing cyclists to cross it at an altitude of 1,450 to 1,900 m, from the west to the east and vice versa. One reaches the Bike Highline Meran/o through various uphills, or by using either the Aschbach Cable Car or the shuttle service. Starting from the Bike Highline Meran/o there are various trails descending into the valley. The section between the Tablanderalm and the Mauslochalm mountain pastures is the most technically challenging; all other routes are easily manageable.» Info: Naturno Tourist Office, Via Municipio 1, I-39025 Naturno Tel. +39 0473 666077, www.naturns.it / 52 / / 53 /
