Setting up your laptop to print to the student lounge printer Click on the system you are using: 1) MacOS X 10.2 2) MacOS X 10.3/10.4 3) Windows 2000/XP 4) Windows 7/Vista 1) MacOS X 10.2 In order to print to a Social Work printer from your laptop, you will have to be on the network via ethernet or wireless. You will also need to be logged in as a member of the root group. Adding a Printer 1. Log on to your machine as you usually would. 2. Open Print Center from Applications/Utilities on your hard drive. 3. From the Printer List dialog click Add.
4. Select IP Printing or LPD/LPR. 5. Enter socialwork214a-ninja.atg.columbia.edu for the printer address. 6. Make sure not to leave Queue Name blank and enter public for the queue name. 7. Select the printer model. Even though the printer is really a Laserjet 9000, the 5Si Mopier PS driver will work fine. 8. Click Add. Printing Your File
Once you have configured a printer you must still choose it as your file's destination when printing. Any files you print will be sent to the printer you choose under an application's Print Setup, which is normally found under the File drop down menu. 1. Open the file that you plan to print. 2. Select Print... from the File menu. 3. Pick the printer you wish to print to from the drop down printer name menu. You may also select other options such as Duplex here. 4. Once the print dialog box disappears, you may go to the NINJa printer station and pick up your document. If You Also Have a Local Printer... If you also have a local printer connected to your PC, you may switch between the local printer and the NINJa printer at any time simply by changing the printer setting under the application's Print Setup dialog usually found under the File drop down menu. 2) MacOS X 10.3/10.4 In order to print to a Social Work printer from your laptop, you will have to be on the network via ethernet or wireless. 9. In the window that pops up, put a check next to Duplex Unit and then click Continue. 10. Printer successfully added

Choose the appropriate setting for the Two-Sided option and print. Long-edged binding is the preferred choice for most documents. 3. Once the print dialog box disappears, you may go to the NINJa printer station and pick up your document.
If You Also Have a Local Printer... If you also have a local printer connected to your PC, you may switch between the local printer and the NINJa printer at any time simply by changing the printer setting under the application's Print Setup dialog usually found under the File drop down menu. 3) Windows 2000/XP To print to a Social Work printer from your laptop, you will have to be on the network via ethernet or wireless, and logged in as a member of the Administrators group. Adding Print Services 1. Choose Control Panel from the Start menu.
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs. 3. Select Add/Remove Windows Components. 4. Make sure that Other Network File and Print Services is selected and click Next.
Adding a Printer 1. Choose Control Panel from the Start menu. 2. Double-click Printers and Faxes. 3. Select Add a printer. 4. From the Add Printer Wizard click Next.
5. Make sure that you are adding a Local Printer from the Add Printer Wizard and click Next. 6. Select Create a new port. Select LPR Port for the Type of port and click Next.
7. Enter socialwork214a-ninja.atg.columbia.edu for the server name. Enter public for the print queue name. Click OK. 8. You will be asked to choose a printer driver for this printer. Even though the printer is really a Laserjet 9000, the 5Si/Si MX PS driver will work fine. Select the Manufacturer and the Printer and click Next.
9. Enter a printer name that you would like to use and click Next.
10. Click Next and then Finish to complete this part of the setup. 11. To allow double-sided printing, Right-click on the newly created printer and select Properties
12. Under the Device Settings tab, set the Duplex Unit to Installed. Click the OK button to complete the changes. 1. Choose Control Panel from the Start menu. 2. Double-click Programs and Features. 3. Select Turn Windows features on or off from the menu on the left. 4. In the Windows Features window that appears, click on the + sign in front of Print Services and check the box for LPD Print Service and LPR Port Monitor. Click the OK button. Adding a Printer 1. Choose Control Panel from the Start menu. 2. Double-click Printers. 3. Click on Add a printer in the menu bar. 4. Click on Add a local printer. 5. Select Create a new port. Select Standard TCP/IP port from the drop-down menu and click Next. 6. The Host information is socialwork214a-ninja.atg.columbia.edu. The Port name field will automatically complete. De-select the checkbox for the Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use option and click Next.
7. Windows will now detect the remote host, this could take several minutes
8. You will now be prompted to configure the TCP/IP port Select Custom and click Settings... to open the configuation dialog. 9. Select LPR as the Protocol and provide the Queue Name from step 6; check the LPR Byte Counting Enabled option, and make sure that SNMP Status Enabled is
unchecked. Click OK
10. Pull the latest printer drivers from Microsoft by first selecting the Windows Update button before selecting a printer model.
11. First select the HP under Manufacturer then HP Laserjet 9000 PS, click Next
12. Enter a printer name that you would like to use and click Next. 13. Click Finish to complete this part of the setup.
