17 th CEO Summit R ö j t ö k m u z s a j, S z i d ó n i a M a n o r H o u s e ( W e d n e s d a y - F r i d a y ) M o d e r a t o r : D r. G y ö r g y B ő g e l, C E U IS THE FOG CLEARING? CRISIS AND RECOVERY Economic crises have both short and long term effects. The first reaction is usually the emergency measures: you have to get money, prop up the instable buildings, and salvage whatever you can. In the first phase of any crisis, the fog is too thick; the only thing the driver sees is that the others are braking and hooting so he also steps on the brake and tries to twist the steering wheel. Once you managed to avoid the bigger trouble, the next task is to find your way, a way-out, a new path on which you can switch up to the fourth and fifth gear again. The 17 th CEO Summit will focus on the following two topics: What were the results of the first responses given to the economic crisis? Did we manage to avoid the bigger trouble and what are the consequences of the crisis management decisions made? What are the things that need to be changed permanently? Can we identify the tasks necessary for our adaptation? Are there any new strategies and visions? According to our traditions, the Summit will start with a political and economic policy analysis. The latter will focus on the 2009 budget: how different is it from the previous ones; can we assess its first implications; can it guarantee the necessary equilibrium; is there sufficient political support for its implementation; can we handle the social tensions that it may bring about; what is provisional and what is permanent in its goals, structure and key figures; and can we really avoid the traditional logics of preelection budgets as it was promised? Industrial reports and analyses are going to play a more important role at this year s Summit. We plan to hold a series of round table talks about the energy sector, the gas industry, the IT-communications market, the financial and investment sector and the fast changing industry of consumables. In view of its importance, special attention will be paid to the situation of companies in the export sector, to the opportunities for encouraging exports, to Hungary s potential for attracting capital investment as well as to the investment and development policies of multinational companies. As usual, in addition to the industry-specific round tables, there will also be presentations dealing with topical issues of corporate management. With a history of eight years, we believe that the CEO Summits are becoming increasingly important forums for representatives of the business and social sectors. Therefore, at the seventeenth event we will make an effort to enable all the participants to formulate and express their opinion about the country s economic situation and the strategy to be followed. 1
