Development of Big Day was informed by a team of expert researchers and practitioners, led by Dr. Anne Cunningham. Big Day prepares preschool children for kindergarten through intentional and engaging learning opportunities that build the necessary foundations in essential learning domains. The promotion of social-emotional development is integrated into the curriculum, helping children build social competence skills, improve self-control, and develop relationships with their teachers and peers. Big Day provides a full- or half-day curriculum, an extensive collection of classic and contemporary children s literature and nonfiction text, intensive language and early literacy development, technology that connects children, teachers, and families, and 100% equity in English and Spanish. The curriculum is designed to ensure children acquire knowledge, skills, and understanding each day through hands-on experience, purposeful play, and teacher-led instruction. The learning experiences include social-emotional development, oral language, literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, art, and physical development. The organizing features of the curriculum are the Big Experiences Circle Time and Story Time that integrate learning domains and provide an anchor for conversation, play, and learning. Each Big Experience is accompanied by activities that provide opportunities to solidify and extend learning and provide responsive instruction. Small Group Instruction targets essential literacy and math skills, allowing teachers to provide focused instruction, guidance, and feedback in key skills and reteach using alternative procedures or modalities. Learning Centers time provides children with the opportunity for intentional play, social interaction, and independent exploration. Flexible implementation for both full- and half-day PreK Big Day for PreK provides everything needed to create and manage a purposeful and fun early-learning environment: Teacher Welcome Kit: Essential tools for getting started 8 Big Theme Boxes include resources for planning and teaching Big Wall charts for building oral language Big Books and Lap Books for sharing Big Learning Box: materials for building language and content-area knowledge Online resources for teachers, children, and families Scholastic is committed to partnering with schools and districts to support a strong implementation of Big Day for PreK early-learning program. In-person implementation training is available, during which prekindergarten teachers and administrators will learn how to effectively use Big Day for PreK in the classroom. Big Day for PreK utilizes the power of technology to enhance learning. Teacher Space provides anytime, anywhere access to innovative resources for PreK classrooms. BookFlix: an online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks from Westin Woods with theme-related nonfiction ebooks from Scholastic. Big Day for PreK incorporates BookFlix ebooks in daily lessons, and all features are accessible on a computer or from an Interactive Whiteboard. Technology Watch the Story! Engage children with award-winning animated versions of classic books. Read the Book! Aired with each video storybook is a theme-related nonfiction ebook. Children can read along with the nonfiction ebook independently, in small groups, in Story Time, and at home. Extend Learning! Interactive educational games, author biographies, and carefully selected links to age-appropriate websites reinforce learning. BookFlix includes additional features and supports such as o Animated Video Read Along to allow children to follow along with the story with highlighted captions o Highlighted vocabulary words with audio supports to help build word recognition and fluency Interactive Wall Charts: provide a theme-related background with relevant images and vocabulary words to enhance Whole Group and Small Group Learning on an Interactive Whiteboard.
