1. About This Guide This guide will help you install and get started with BitDefender Security for File Servers. For detailed instructions, please refer to the Administrator's Guide, which you can download from the Documentation section of our Support Center. The instructions provided in this document are for a local installation. You can also install and manage BitDefender Security for File Servers remotely using BitDefender Management Server. Documentation for this alternative, as well as other useful articles and video tutorials can be accessed by visiting the BitDefender Support Center. The guide consists of three parts: 1. Before You Install lets you know what are the prerequisites for installing the program. 2. Installing BitDefender Security for File Servers outlines the installation scenarios and describes the installation wizard. 3. After You Install helps you take the all-important first steps in using the program. BitDefender Security for File Servers 2

2. Before You Install There are a few steps to take in order to prepare the installation: Make sure the computer meets the system requirements. Log on to the computer as an administrator. Remove any similar security software from the computer. Running two security programs simultaneously may affect their operation and cause major problems with the system. System Requirements Software Requirements Operating System: Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 and Update Rollup 1 Version 2 Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 Microsoft Windows Server 2008 / Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Internet Explorer 6 Hardware Requirements 64-bit Any Windows machine (Intel or AMD) Minimum 1 GB of free space on the hard drive 32-bit Minimum Processor - Pentium III 500 MHz 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM, 512 MB recommended Minimum 1 GB of free space on the hard drive BitDefender Security for File Servers 3

3. Installing BitDefender Security for File Servers To install BitDefender Security for File Servers, you need the application installer. 32-bit and 64-bit variants are available, so make sure to use the one corresponding to the architecture of your system. You can get the installer on a BitDefender installation DVD, or you can download it from an online location, such as the BitDefender website. If you are installing the program from a DVD, insert the disc in the optical drive and use the graphical interface of the DVD to access its contents. The installation package contains other BitDefender Security for Windows Servers products besides BitDefender Security for File Servers. You should install all the products you want to use at the same time. If you install only BitDefender Security for File Servers, you will then need to modify the existing installation whenever other BitDefender products are installed at a later time. As a result of this action, some files may need to be replaced, which may temporarily interfere with the operation of the existing installed products. Depending on whether or not you already have products from the package installed on the computer, there are two ways to install BitDefender Security for File Servers: Fresh installation - no other product from the installation package is installed on the computer. Modifying an existing installation - at least one other product from the installation package is already installed on the computer. 3.1. Fresh Installation To begin a fresh installation, locate the installer and double-click it. A wizard will appear and you must follow its steps to complete installation. You can quit the wizard at any time by clicking the Cancel button. 1. Click Next to continue. Note After you click Next, BitDefender will check if your system meets the minimum requirements for the product and will inform you of any issues that might require your attention before installation can continue. 2. Please read the License Agreement, select I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click Next. Note If you do not agree to these terms click Cancel. The installation process will be abandoned and you will exit setup. 3. BitDefender can scan critical areas on your system before the installation to ensure the server is free of infections. The scan takes a few minutes. Click Scan Now to start the scan or Skip Scan to install without scanning. BitDefender Security for File Servers 4

Important It is highly recommended to perform the scan. Active malware could disrupt the installation and even cause it to fail. If a threat is detected, a reboot may be required in order to remove it. 4. Select BitDefender Security for File Servers, click the corresponding arrow and then click Will be installed on local hard drive on the shortcut menu. The default installation folder is displayed on the lower part of the window. To select a different installation folder, click Browse, locate the folder and then click OK to set the location. Note Click Next. You can also install other BitDefender products for Windows-based servers. Simply select them as shown before. Depending on the products selected, additional steps may be added to the installation process described in this section. 5. Configure product update options. Installing product updates regularly is essential to the security of your server. Depending on the level of interference with the server, there are three types of product updates: product updates that do not require stopping server traffic or to reboot the server product updates that require stopping server traffic, but do not require to reboot the server product updates that require to reboot the server To configure automatic downloads and installation for each type of product update, select one of the following options: Automatically Install Select this option and BitDefender will automatically download and install product updates. This is the recommended choice for product updates that do not require stopping server traffic or a server reboot. Install at a time I specify Select this option if you want BitDefender to install available updates at certain times. Select from the corresponding drop-down lists the date (day and time) when you want this to happen. This way you can configure BitDefender to perform product updates at times when it is least likely for interferences to occur with server activity (during night time, for example). Let me decide when to install Select this option if you want BitDefender to automatically download product updates, but let you decide when to install them. This is the recommended choice for product updates that require stopping server traffic or a server reboot. To disable automatic product updates, select No automatic product updates, even if it will make my server more vulnerable. 6. BitDefender Security for File Servers contains an incident management module that allows creating incident reports during product crashes. By agreeing to send BitDefender Security for File Servers 5

the incident reports to the BitDefender Lab, you agree to help us find quick fixes for our bugs. You could make a major contribution to the development of a stable product that satisfies your needs. The reports will only be used for debugging purposes. They will never be used as commercial data or disclosed to third parties. To send incident reports to the BitDefender Lab, select I agree to submit incident reports to the BitDefender Lab and specify your e-mail address. Click Next. 7. Click Install to begin the installation. 8. The setup takes a few minutes to complete. Detailed information will be displayed to help you follow the progress of the installation. Once completed, click Finish to close the installer. You may be asked to restart the system so that the setup wizard can complete the installation process. 3.2. Modifying Existing Installation In order to install BitDefender Security for File Servers when one or more BitDefender Security for Windows Servers products are already installed on the computer, you need to follow these steps: 1. Do one of the following: Double-click the BitDefender Security for Windows Servers installer. Follow the path: Start Menu All Programs BitDefender Security for Windows Servers Modify, Repair or Uninstall. 2. Click Next. 3. Click Modify. 4. You have reached Step 4 of the installation wizard. Follow the wizard to complete the installation. BitDefender Security for File Servers 6

4. After You Install BitDefender Security for File Servers can be configured and managed through a centralized, MMC-based management console. The management console provides access to all features and settings of BitDefender Security for File Servers. To open the management console, follow the path: Start Menu All Programs BitDefender Security for Windows Servers BitDefender Security for File Servers or quicker, double-click the BitDefender icon from the system tray. Whenever you need help, click the Help button located on the standard toolbar of the MMC or press the F1 key on your keyboard to open the Administrator's Guide. There are a few tasks you should perform after the installation. Enter Proxy Server Settings, If One Is Used Configure Scanning Exclusions Run a Deep System Scan Configure Quarantine Rescan Register the Product Enter Proxy Server Settings, If One Is Used By default, BitDefender automatically checks for updates every hour. New malware signatures are automatically downloaded and, depending on the update settings, product updates can be automatically downloaded and installed. If a proxy server is used to connect to the Internet, you need to configure BitDefender to use it for updates. To configure the proxy server settings: 1. Select Update in the tree menu and then the Locations tab. 2. Select the Use proxy check box corresponding to the location used for updates over the Internet and enter the required information in the fields provided. Configure Scanning Exclusions BitDefender Security for File Servers automatically excludes from scanning several files, folders and processes used by a number of Microsoft server solutions and other BitDefender products. This is done to improve performance and avoid interfering with the operation of certain applications. Depending on the applications running on the server and the exclusions recommended for them, you may need to add additional exclusions manually. To manually add items to be excluded from scanning, select Server Scan in the tree menu and do the following: Go to the Global Exceptions tab to view and manage the files and folders excluded from scanning. Go to the Process Exclusions tab to view and manage the processes excluded from scanning. BitDefender Security for File Servers 7

Run a Deep System Scan By scanning the system, any threats that might already be on the server can be detected and removed. To initiate the scan: 1. Select Server Scan in the tree menu and then the Scan tasks tab. 2. Select Perform Deep System Scan and click Start Scan. Optionally, click the corresponding Customize link before scanning to open the settings window where you can configure the actions to be taken on detected files and the notification settings. Note Avoid scanning the server when the server workload is at high levels, especially in the case of a thorough scanning. It is recommended to perform scans when the server is idle or nearly idle. Configure Quarantine Rescan The quarantine is a secure area where files detected as infected or suspicious during on-demand or real time scans can be isolated. BitDefender can repair and restore quarantined files by rescanning them with newer malware signatures. For this reason, quarantined files are by default rescanned every 30 days. For increased efficiency: Configure BitDefender to rescan the files after every signature update. Set an alternative location where repaired files can be restored, in case the original location is no longer available. To configure the quarantine settings, open the quarantine properties window: 1. Select Monitoring > Quarantine in the tree menu. 2. Click Properties... Register the Product You must register the product in order to continue using it after the trial period expires. To open the registration wizard, select Monitoring in the tree menu and then click the Register Now link. The wizard will also allow you to create a BitDefender account, which helps you stay connected to BitDefender. BitDefender Security for File Servers 8
