Master's Degree Helmut Dispert, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Germany Joe Luca, Edith Cowan University, Australia MInT Master of Innovative Technology International Master's Degree Program An Approach to Providing Key Research and Development Skills in Industry Growth Areas

Outline Introduction Master of Innovative Technology Institutional Advantages Distinguishing Features MInT and the BSOU Baltic Sea Open University Summary Questions

Introduction The Status The convergence of communications, information, entertainment, commerce and computing, as a result of advances in technology through the internet, interactive TV and mobile technology are laying the foundation for the development of an "Information Society". Innovative technologies and multimedia are emerging fields with boundless opportunities for application development in streaming technologies, interactive TV, interactive games., mobile media and devices, E-learning, Virtual Reality, and many others.

Introduction Key Questions Can universities continually produce graduates that have current and relevant skills to keep up with changing industry requirements? Do we keep writing new units? Or, should we try harder to collaborate with other Faculties, universities and industry to provide targeted skills?

Introduction MInT Master of Innovative Technology The MInT Idea: Reverse Engineering course structure, through project focus on industry growth areas Use of experts by leveraging key skills and expertise from appropriate Faculties and collaborating universities with required expertise Multi-disciplinary approach by encouraging innovative project development across disciplines, universities and countries Mobility - local, national and international Inter-cultural awareness

Introduction Innovative course, aimed at producing graduates that can easily move into new technology positions. Specifically students will graduate with: An understanding of multi-cultural issues related to working in different countries and how it specifically affects innovative technologies Skills in specific technology areas Skills in research design and methodology Skills in scope and conceptualising a research project proposal Ability to use correct tools and techniques in the chosen field of speciality An understanding of and the ability to apply processes of decision-making and team management in innovative technology development

Consortium Master's Degree Program with International Solutions A consortium of international universities, each providing expertise will service the course by providing a specific theme. Proposed themes and collaborating universities include: Edith Cowan University, Australia - E-Learning Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Germany Information Technology, Multimedia Programming Texas A&M University, U.S.A. Information Technology Coventry University, UK Serious Gaming University of Vaasa, Finland Mobile Media Technical University of Graz, Austria Information Technology Jönköping University, Sweden Game Design University of Aveiro, Portugal Interface Design

MInT This strategy will enable students to graduate with state of the art skills leveraged from international experts that will give them an advantage in a rapidly changing employment marketplace. International collaboration and mobility will be promoted by encouraging students to travel overseas for one or two semesters. It is also envisaged that staff mobility will be also be promoted to help gain skills in new specialist areas, as well as cultural experiences.

MInT Structure Course structure Semester 1 Semester 2 Semester 3 Semester 4 7,5 cps Globalisation, Innovation and Culture Diversity 7,5 cps Research Methods and Project Management Elective Units (50% of the course) 60cps 15 cps Research Project and Thesis Preparation 30 cps Project/Thesis Unit Half of the course of study is based on elective units and negotiated between the student and the Master of Innovative Technology coordinator. This process of customising the elective units helps address immediate industry and community requirements, uses expert skill from different faculties/institutions, and promotes awareness of inter-cultural and globalisation issues.

Joint Master's Degree Course structure Unit Globalisation, Innovation, Cultural Diversity Research Methods and Project Management Research Project and Thesis Preparation Project/Thesis Unit Elective Units Total European Union 7,5 7,5 15 30 60 120 Australia 20 20 20 60 120 240

Joint Master's Degree MODE OF STUDY The course is available by full-time, or part-time mode. MODE OF DELIVERY This course is available in the following modes of delivery: On-campus, and Off-campus.

Learning Agreement Learning Agreement Core Units (25%) Electives (50%) Thesis/Project (25%)

Learning Agreement Learning Agreement Requirements for Electives Clear focus on skill development for project/thesis identified as innovative, required, or interesting area of research Represents a coherent set of skills Negotiated with coordinator, supervisor and collaborating Faculties/Universities

Flexible delivery For maximum flexibility, the structure allows the elective units to be made up from different weightings. For example (using the EU points scale), a student could do: 3 units from Edith Cowan at 10cp each = 30cp 4 units from Kiel at 7.5cp each = 30cp Or: 4 units from Vaasa at 7.5cp each = 30cp 4 units from Kiel at 7.5cp each = 30cp etc any combination of units to make the required credit points

Development Current Developments: MInT comes in different flavors, so far available are: E-Learning for Specific Learning Difficulties Intelligent Materials & Their Application Information and Internet Technology - IIT Multimedia - MM Renewable and Wind Energy Further Example Scenarios (Edith Cowan University and selected international partner institutions): Game Design Serious Gaming and Real Time Simulation Preventive Health Communications Business Process Visualisation Game Design for Geriatric Dementia Care Designing for Manufacturing Materials Intelligent Materials and Their Application Technical Illustration Aviation Journalism

Joint Master's Degree Possible future development: Dual-Badge Degrees: Dual Degree Joint Degree Problems to be solved (in Germany): 50% / 50% - Rule Accreditation: MInT is accredited in Australia, can this accredidation be recognised in Germany?

Summary The Master of Innovative Technology bridges the industry/education nexus by identifying industry and community growth areas, and then supports students in customising the course structure to suit these needs, as well as their own aspirations. Also, the multidisciplinary approach enables innovative projects to be developed that source expertise from a range of disciplines, including: New Media, Communications and E-learning Information Technology, Software Development Hardware Development Business Solutions & Entrepreneurship Health and Wellness Other areas identified by industry or community This approach enables students to perform project work, and gain expertise in areas that are clearly in need of new skills, and in which specific courses haven t yet been developed. New growth areas include animated modelling, mobile technology content creation, serious gaming, 3D modelling, new information media for journalism and interactive TV.
