4 Cyprus Cyprus is a member state of the European Union (held the presidency of the Council of the European Union, July-December 2012) It is the third largest and third most populous island in the eastern Mediterranean Cyprus is a major tourist destination in the Mediterranean Cyprus has a sub-tropical climate, with very mild winters and warm to hot summers The total population of Cyprus is 1,103,997 4

5 Cyprus (continued) Population: Greeks 17.3%, British 14.8%, Russian 13.6%, Filipinos 10.7%, Romanian 4.8%, Bulgarian 5.4%, other EU countries 4%, other non-eu countries 12% etc. Official languages: Greek and Turkish; English is widely spoken on the island and both Russian and Chinese have become fairly widespread in recent years due to the influx of immigrants and investors from Russia and China Tourism, financial services, and shipping are significant parts of the economy Excellent transportation infrastructure - Available modes of transport are by road, sea and air 5

11 The Confucius Institute The Confucius Institute for the teaching of the Chinese language and Chinese culture has been established at the University of Cyprus with Chinese universities in 2013 (Beijing Institute of Education) Offers numerous Chinese language and culture courses The Confucius Day Festival will be held for the first time in Cyprus, on 27 th September 2014, celebrating the 10 th anniversary of the Confucius Institute 11

13 Distinguished Faculty Nobel Prize winner in Economics (2010) Professor Christopher Pissarides, School of Economics and Management Professor Pissarides is the Chairman of the National Economic Council of Cyprus Recently, a 2.2 million euro research project was awarded to Professor C. Pissarides, to investigate employment issues in Europe 13

14 Recent Achievements - Examples The University of Cyprus has had, since 2007, the Presidency of the Network of Universities from Capitals of Europe (UNICA) The President of UNICA is the former Rector of the UCY, who was re-elected as President for the term of office UCY is the first university in Cyprus and Greece to receive the HR Excellence in Research Award from the European Commission The 2013 INFORMS Technology Management Best Paper Award was awarded to Professors of the Department of Business and Public Administration 14
