Introduction to photography, painting and culture of the Lappish landscape. Aims:: To provide students with an orientation to culture, landscape and environment in the Lappish north through photography, painting and regional cultural history. Course content: The North presented via art of photography and painting, a cultural overview of the North in art and history. Method: Lectures, practice, critique. Materials: Digital camera (any kind), portable computer with simple or advanced imaging program, watercolors, lots of paper, brushes, pastels if desired but not required, attitude. Evaluation: Participation and critique. Grading: Pass/fail Requirements: A basic knowledge of photography. Timing: Autumn, usually at the end of August. UART1103 Art and Visual Culture in the North 3 cr. Aim: To provide students with an orientation to culture and environment in North through fine art, contemporary art and community art. Content: The North presented in fine art, North in the art, art in the North from the community art and environment studies perspective. Method: Lectures and seminars 21 hours, independent work 17 hours. Visits to the exhibitions in Arktikum, in Rovaniemi art museum and other galleries; discussions and an essay on exhibitions. Content: From the heritage of Finnish Art and Craft till functionalist movement until today's modern design products. The product culture in Finland is presented and discussed using Finnish architects, industrial, graphic, audiovisual, fashion and textile designers and their works as examples. Method: Lectures about Finnish design. In the final assignment students are asked to compare their own heritage and background to their new experiences as foreign exchange students in Rovaniemi and in Finland. The assignment can be writing an essay or to produce an artistic piece or a product according a theme discussed in the class. Teaching methods: Monthly seminar sessions reviewing the progress of each project as well as completed productions in accordance with the plans submitted. Prerequisite: In order to join the seminar and begin their work, students must draw up and submit a written plan for an artistic production. The work should fall within a field of visual art in which the student has completed basic and intermediate courses or has otherwise proven his/her ability to carry out the project he/she has planned.
