1 DEGREE PROGRAMME IN MEDIA Studies in English Spring semester 2012 Flash Basics, 5 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Film and Television) The students will learn: - how to produce graphics and animation with Flash CS5 - how to create interactive web banners and flash-based portfolio - how to use sounds in Flash - how to export and publish flash web site - Introduction to ActionScript 3.0 programming language Digital Illustration, 3 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Film and Television) The course of Digital Illustration gives some useful tools and tricks to create vector- and pixel based illustration by using Adobe PhotoShop and Illustrator programs. Via many exercises such as creating figures and portraits using the collage technique, some useful and important rules of illustrating are brought up. Works and styles of some great illustrators will be explored and there will be a few short lessons on simplifying, figure anatomy and metaphors. Storytelling and visual constructions, 5 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Film and Television) Course designed for making films with Visual Video manipulations. Course involves the entire process of film making The students will be able to - construct his or her storyboard - how to construct visual manipulation - how to use Blue Screen - how to use multi-images when you are building one compiled image - how to cut and paste pieces from images onto other scenes - how to using AFTER EFFECTS or FINAL CUT - how to put sound design to the image Package design, 3 ECTS to 5 ECTS The course covers limits and requirements set for a package by logistics, marketing, advertising, consumers and environment. This course will provide the student with information and an overall picture of different factors which have an effect on packaging design; especially those connected with marketing and advertising. Coursework includes lectures, tutored assignments and feedback. Illustration and Book Graphics, 6 ECTS Upon completion the student knows the main features of illustration. The student masters illustration and basics concepts and rules of book design. He/she is able to create small-scale illustration tasks for different books and publishings. Requires the use of Adobe InDesign Life Drawing, 3 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Film and Television) Upon completion the student will have basic knowledge of human proportions, movement and plasticity. - the student is familiar with the basic rules when comparing 3-dimensional observations and 2- dimensional surfaces - the student masters several drawing techniques - the student is familiar with the idea of a persistent drawing process and self-evaluation. Course contents - student explore different methods when transposing a 3-dimensional observation onto a 2- dimensional basic surface - basics of human anatomy - basics of different drawing techniques - advanced studies in model drawing and croquis Basics of Photography, 2 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Film and Television) Objectives The student can use digital SLR camera in different situations. He/she can use camera in full manual mode and is able to optimize exposure. He/she knows the basics of Raw format and Photoshop program. Content The basics of the digital photography and the studio lighting. Photoshop program from the photographers point of view.
3 Photography Genre Workshop, Personal project, 6 ECTS Objectives The student is able to develope his/her professional and artistic expertise in project work. He/she utilises his innovative expertise in project planning and is able to estimate results and re-develope the project. Content Project definition, planning and finishing. Presentations during the project obligatory. Qualifications Sufficient amount of professional studies. Basic Photography. 4 DEGREE PROGRAMME IN FILM AND TELEVISION (Hämeentie 161) Courses for incoming exchange students, spring 2012 Finland Close-Up, 3 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Media) A Peep behind the Scenes of Finnish Culture, Media and Politics The course gives an insight into contemporary and past Finnish culture in all its forms and expressions (high culture, sub-culture, multi-culture, Finnish, Finnish-Swedish and Sami culture etc.), media and politics as well as design. Writing for Web, 5 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Media) The students will learn how to use the new media applications in journalism. The students will learn the essentials of journalistic writing for web. The students will produce and publish journalism based content for Metropolia s web-publication Taajuus. Course contents: the new forms of the media and the connections to the traditional media production processes in the new media journalistic writing skills the new media project reflecting the learned skills Technical Exercises, 3 ECTS Objectives: Cultivating students technical skills in video, audio and editing Content: Filming and editing exercises 3 days audio, 3 days video, 3 days editing / approx. 60h contact weeks 2, 3 & 4 Technical Fundamentals of Radio Production, 6-9 ECTS (available also for exchange students in Media) a) Basics of radio 1,5 ECTS The students will investigate central contents and practices of the public radio and the commercial radio. The students understand the work methods of broadcasting as well as the used technical solutions. Weeks 9-10 b) Radio pre-production 1,5 ECTS The students will prepare recorded programmes for student radio broadcast. The students learn the central concepts of sound expression. The students learn to manage different forms of the radio story. weeks c) On-Air work 3-6 ECTS The aim of the course is to master both the content and the technology of the production process on the student radio channel. The students will operate a radio channel for four weeks. During weeks 14-16
