Start semester: Optional Teaching language: English Programme responsibility: Peter Haugseth and Per Møller Introduction Bachelor of Northern Studies (BNS) is an international BA programme with special relevance for northern students and those seeking knowledge of northern nature, resources, environment, politics, peoples and cultures with a special focus on indigenous peoples of the north and sustainable development of the region. UIT - The Arctic University of Norway is a member institution of the University of the Artic, a network of universities in the circumpolar north. Uarctic has developed seven core courses on the Circumpolar North. These units have been taken in use by UIT - The Arctic University of Norway, further developed and are forming the core courses of our Northern Studies degree programme. This bachelor programme can be taken online or as a combination of online courses and on site taught courses. The core courses are all offered online, while three of the four optional advanced emphasis programs of the programme at UIT - The Arctic University of Norway, are offered on site and linked up to exchange scholarship programmes, North2North and Barents Pluss. A fourth option is offered online. The advanced part may also be taken at other institutions if applied for and accepted by UIT - The Arctic University of Norway. The remaining credits (90) for the bachelor degree are made up of electives. The major of the bachelor programme consists of five core courses (60 ECTS), three advanced emphasis courses (30 ECTS), leaving 90 credits (ECTS) for elective courses. The number of credits for electives allows the candidates to include another major in the bachelor programme. In this way they will have access to more master programmes according to the chosen disciplinary profile of the supplementary major (minimum credits) taken as part of their BA study programme. The credits given for the core circumpolar courses are tailored to fit into the credit and degree system of UIT - The Arctic University of Norway, corresponding to the European credit transfer system (ECTS). The Bachelor of Northern studies is also offered as a double degree BA programme for students enrolled at other universities/colleges, of which 90 ects can be used as electives for the BNS diploma. Target group and admission requirements: The programme is designed for students who want to develop a multi-disciplinary competence on the High North with special reference to social sciences, politics and governance, indigenous peoples, environmental issues and sustainable management of natural

resources. Admission requirements are general competence for admission to higher education and the ability to read and write in English.. Expected learning outcomes: By the completion of the programme students have acquired knowledge and skills as to: an inter-disciplinary approach to Northern issues knowledge on essential features of land, ecology and environment sustainable management of ecosystems knowledge on peoples and cultures, politics and governance issues entrepreneurship, innovation and community development use of local resources for local and regional development insight and knowledge on High North politics and Barents cooperation knowledge and skills in inter-cultural communication Choice of optional AE programme is determining knowledge and skills beyond what has been gained through completed core courses. The program is an answer to the growing demand for inter-disciplinary insight and knowledge in public and private management and local and regional development. Choice of the advanced emphases part of the BA programme would also influence your competence for special jobs in the public or private sector. Students with a disciplinary study background are increasing their career opportunities by completing and qualifying for the double degree BNS diploma. Access to MA programmes is also a possibility in Canada, Norway and Iceland. Study programme content, structure and organization: The major of the BNS program consists of five core courses (60 ECTS) and advanced emphasis courses (30 ECTS). The following core courses, are all available online: BNS 100 An Introduction to the Circumpolar World ( 10 credits/ ECTS) BNS 115 Land and Environment of the Circumpolar World ( 15 ECTS) BNS 120 Peoples and Cultures of the Circumpolar World ( 15 ECTS) BNS 131 Contemporary Issues of the Circumpolar World I ( 10 ECTS) BNS 132 Contemporary Issues of the Circumpolar World II (10 ECTS) The international secretariat for undergraduate studies at the University of the Arctic (Uarctic) offers the same content online, organised as seven six credit courses and with reduced syllabus required. These courses can be combined with our extended BNS courses, but

students will then have to compensate for lacking credits with more courses or to write a Northern Studies bachelor assignment (10 ECTS).. The advanced emphasis courses of the bachelor programme are forming a one semester programme and students can choose among three options: Management of Local and Regional Development, being offered every spring semester. This programme is focusing on developing insight and competence in local enterprises and community development. Excursions to local communities, public and private organisations, form an important part of the programme. North American Studies and Intercultural Communication is an AE program of special relevance for students taking an interest in language and North American culture. It is being taught by the section of English language and is also optional for students studying English language and culture. Arctic Innovation and Entrepreneurship, being offered every autumn semester and made up by three courses titled Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Enterprise Innovation Practice and Project Management. This program has a special focus on innovation and international economic development, suitable for students seeking building competence within this field of study. A fourth option is to work online with the High North Politics, Inter-Cultural Communication and Barents Cooperation. This advanced emphasis program consists of two online courses in the autumn semester and one course in the spring semester. One course could be dropped and replaced by a written assignment. The two online courses offered in the autumn semester are focusing on comparative Nordic and Russian government and intercultural and cross-border communication. A third course is offered online for the spring semester focusing on High North Politics and the Barents Cooperation. Some intensive teaching could be included, but these courses are designed to be taught online by the use of Fronter. The alternative course is a research paper, empirical or as a literature study, with some tutoring. This assignment, BNS 200 Northern Studies Assignment, may be handed in during the following spring semester, realizing that 30 ECTS could be rather demanding for students who are doing the BNS degree program as a double degree program. Autumn semester 1., 2. og 3. year BNS 100 An Introduction (10) BNS 120 Peoples and Cultures.. (15) Elective course (5) BNS 131 Contemporary Issues I, Economy (10) Electives (10) Electives (10) or Ex. fac. Optional advanced emphases programmes or courses (30 ects): Arctic Innovation and Entrepreneurship (onsite taught 30 ects) High North Politics, Inter-Cultural Communication and Barents Cooperation (online taught 30 ects) ( autumn and spring semester) Spring semester 1., 2. og 3. year BNS 100 An Introduction (new starters) BNS 115 Land and Environment..(15) Electives (5-15) BNS 132 Contemporary Issues II, Politics (10) Electives (10) Electives (10) or Ex. Phil. Optional advanced emphases programmes or courses (30 ects): Management of Local and Regional Development (onsite taught 30 ects) North American Studies and Crosscultural Communication ( onsite taught 30 ects)

The above suggested study progress plan is meant for those doing 180 ects at UIT - The Arctic University of Norway. If you are doing the programme as a double BA degree, you are allowed to study in your own pace. Generally, all of the core courses should be completed before you take on the advanced emphases ones, or preferably four of them. Teaching and learning methods: The BNS core courses are taught online by the use of the virtual classroom programme Classfronter (Fronter). Three advanced emphases programmes (courses) are taught on site by lectures and seminars. Excursions are included as part of two of the onsite learning programmes. One advanced emphasis program is also taught online (autumn semester) and with the option to hand in an assignment in the following spring semester. Final assessment: The students' academic performance for the core BNS courses will be assessed through Answers to given module questions. The answers have to be approved by responsible teacher before the students are allowed to do the final exam. A final written home based exam The mentioned exam form may differ for the advanced emphasis courses, and some of these courses are also including term papers, presentations and folder exams as assessment forms. The completed Northern Studies degree programme qualifies for a Bachelor of Northern Studies diploma, which is delivered with a diploma supplement according to the common European standard. Grades: The grading scale is A to F, of which F means not passing the exam. Syllabus: Syllabus is included in the course plans presented to the students at the start of the semester. Degree composition The major in Northern studies, minimum of 90 credits, can be combined with any other major or electives of 90 credits/ects. This implies that courses and programmes according to the student s own preferences may make up the remaining credits. If students do the BNS degree programme as a double degree program, any credits from the home university will be accepted. If students have to do 180 ECTS, we advise that these credits are used to include a major in another subject to widen the opportunities for available master programmes within the Uarctic network. Students having completed some six credit circumpolar core courses (BCS) at other networking institutions, are allowed to combine these with our ten credit version of the courses. They will in this case have to send transcripts and fill up missing credits with electives/ a bachelor assignment. UIT - The Arctic University of Norway will encourage the students to take this opportunity to build competence on circumpolar issues and to make use of the University of the Arctic and its member institutions.

Internationalization Other member institutions of the Uarctic network are offering optional advanced emphasis courses. Further information is available at the Uarctic home page/ or by contacting the programme lead. Students taking advanced emphasis courses at a networking Uarctic institution, have access to a special scholarship program (Nort2North). In this case the responsible programme lead has to confirm that the chosen courses will be accepted as part of the Bachelor of Northern Studies degree program at UIT - The Arctic University of Norway. The optional advanced emphasis programmes can be taken by exchange students. Location UIT - The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Finnmark, Campus Alta, has close to 2000 students and is located to the city centre of Alta municipality. Alta is the biggest municipality of Finnmark County, the northernmost county in Norway, bordering Russia and Finland. This part of Norway is known for its amazing natural beauty, offering excellent possibilities for outdoor recreation and experiences of a lifetime. UIT - The Arctic University of Norway is known for its excellent learning environment and its variety of student activities. Student accommodation is located close to campus, and is guaranteed to foreign students. International students are served by an International Office, which will assist with practicalities and in making your stay an interesting and a pleasant one.
