Major and minor subject The student s major subject is comprised of three degree programme modules: basic modules completed in connection with the Bachelor s degree and the subsequent intermediate module as well as the advanced module of the intermediate module. There is only one major subject per degree. The basic module and its intermediate module form the minor subject. The major subject must include at least two studio courses worth at least 9. There must be at least one studio in the minor subject. The Intermediate Module in a Major Subject 30 Intermediate Module in a Minor Subject or special module student s choice of subjects is confirmed in his/her personal study plan. The Master s degree programme may also be completed without a minor subject. Instead of a minor subject intermediate module, the student completes a personal special module. The student may choose a special module from other degree programmes or another domestic or foreign university, provided that it has been approved in his/ her personal study plan (HOPS). If a Landscape student chooses Urban Planning and Design to be his/her major subject, he/she will not be able to have a special module his/her minor subject must be in Landscape. The student s major and minor subject cannot contain the same modules. Methodological Principles The methodological principles module is comprised of scientific method studies, whose purpose is to support the student in completing his/her Master s thesis. The School has confirmed a scientific method course catalogue for all students, who must choose studies worth at least 3. The Licentiate of Science (Technology) degree takes an estimated two years to complete and the Doctor of Science (Technology) degree takes 4 years. Degree Programme in (ARK) Head of degree programme: Päivi Väisänen The objective of the Degree Programme in is to educate architecture professionals, who are well equipped to perform practical design work and possess a broad understanding of the multidisciplinary cultural and artistic field of architecture. The degree programme prepares the student for independent and creative design in various architectural fields and provides him/her with sufficient knowledge and skills to work in co-operation with designers, engineers and developers as well as the users of built environments. The academic objective of the degree programme is to provide theoretical and methodical skills in information retrieval necessary in design work and its critical application as well as the ability to do research, engage in post-graduate study and serve in an advisory capacity. Even though the core expertise of the architect profession remains intact, new skill sets are being introduced to meet future challenges. Changes in broader society and, in particular, the demands of sustain-able development and energy issues, will affect course content and goal-setting. Factors related to sustainable development, such as understanding processes that affect the environment, require multidisciplinary approaches. Challenges involving demographic changes are, particularly with regard to ageing, health and well-being as well as multiculturalism. Use of state-of-the-art information and communications technology will increasingly become part of design, especially data modelling and, in the future, using augmented reality. Basics and Theory of Initially, attention is given to architectural expression, the language and purpose of art as well as experience, memory and imagination as the foundation for artistic influence. The aim of studies is to expand the student s worldview and inspire interest in the various fields of art as well as cultural and human phenomena. The goal is to awaken a critical curiosity as well as an inner uncompromisingness and sense of quality. Another goal involves an understanding of the status and responsibility of architecture in society, the interplay of tradition and innovation and outlooks for sustainable development. Basics of guides the student toward an experimental and inquisitive work approach that makes use of all the senses. Handcrafting and having direct contact with the materials are key. Instruction is primarily given in departmental workshops. Basics of introduces the student to thinking and conceptualisation methods used by architects, focusing on the meaningful content of environment, buil- 56 dings and objects.
