PASTORAL TUTORS Applications are invited for this new pilot scheme providing the opportunity to work full-time or substantial part-time, term-time plus 2 weeks. The pilot exercise would initially be available from 27 th August 2013 until 23 rd May 2014, when it will be reviewed. Substantial training will be provided. Job Purpose Working as members of the Tutorial team the successful candidates will be pastoral tutors to groups of students (likely to be predominantly in their second year), ensuring that they have excellent attendance and academic progress, supporting their social and personal development and performing a number of administrative duties Pastoral Tutors will be responsible for both administrative and pastoral matters relating to the students in their group. They exercise a degree of supervision over the academic progress of students working in close collaboration with their Head of Year. The effectiveness of the tutorial system depends to a great extent upon the quality of the relationship between student and tutor and between tutor and tutor group. Tutors meet once a week with their tutor group for registration for purposes of general communication and to work to a programme of tutorial activities. The Tutorial Programme The Tutorial Programme has, to date, been delivered by teaching staff in addition to their subject teaching. This new pilot aims to introduce support staff as Pastoral Tutors to implement the Tutorial Programme initially alongside teaching staff. Working time The hours will be worked in allocations of 4 hours per tutor group, each group consisting of approximately 30 students. Within each allocation the Pastoral Tutor will have contact time of up to one lesson (65 minutes) to deliver the tutorial programme, the remainder to be used flexibly for consultation, communicating on a one-to-one basis with students, their parents and teachers, and completing administrative duties. It would be desirable for the successful candidates, if part-time, to commit to carrying out their duties over 5 days, though these would not need to be full days, in order to maintain continuity when dealing with pastoral issues. The successful candidates would be expected to attend parents evenings and Tutorial team meetings. Where these take place outside of contracted working hours they would be taken as lieu time or, where this was not possible, paid as additional hours. They would also be expected to spend some time contacting or meeting with parents after the end of the College day where this proves the best method of contact. PASTORAL TUTORS Terms of Employment General Conditions of employment for support staff are as agreed between the Sixth Form Conditions Colleges Association and staff representatives at national level in addition to terms agreed at local level. Dates Status Hours of work 27 th August 2013 to 23 rd May 2014 subject to review of the pilot scheme Temporary, full-time or part-time posts in the College s Support Staff structure. A full time member of support staff will work 37 hours per week, term time plus 2 weeks, Monday - Friday: 8.30am 4.25pm (4.20pm on a Friday), including a half an hour lunchbreak. A part-time Pastoral Tutor will work 4 hours per tutor group (see full details under the Working time section at the beginning of this document), term-time plus 2 weeks equivalent. Pensions Holidays Support staff will be automatically brought into the Local Government Pension Scheme, administered by Worcestershire County Council. Where the contract of employment is for less than 3 months, there is the opportunity to opt to join by completing an application form. As a term-time employee, the leave entitlement is paid as part of salary and all annual leave is taken during College holidays. Full year employees receive 25 working days plus 8 public holidays. There is an entitlement to an additional 5 days holiday after 5 years continuous service.

PASTORAL TUTORS Terms of Employment Pay Salary will be based on the Sixth Form Colleges Support Staff Pay Spine points 22-24, currently 17,614-18,832 per annum for a full-time, full year post. The actual commencing salary will be pro-rata for full-time during term-time plus 2 weeks and for part-time. For example: 24 hours for 6 tutor groups: 10,023 OR Full time: 15,451 Appointment will be to point 22 unless the applicant has considerable relevant experience. A term-time factor isused to calculate salary, which is spread equally throughout the year. To discuss any change to a student s Programme of Study having consulted with teaching staff and ensured that the student is aware of the implications of such a change and then to pass this information on to the relevant Head of Year. 4. To ensure that all students are aware of their rights, responsibilities and methods of communication, and complete other necessary important administration including Learner Agreements, Statements of Examination Entry, Questionnaires. 5. To keep an electronic Student record on the College Gateway of relevant issues, such as those relating to absence in line with the College's Attendance Policy and Procedures. 6. To ensure excellent levels of student attendance through proactive monitoring as well as responding to concerns about student attendance, consulting parents and teaching staff as necessary and following these up, referring matters to the Head of Year or Assistant Principal (Student Support and Progression), if necessary. 7. To review with students on a regular basis their progress in academic work, progression, enrichment and extra-curricular activities and to take steps to ensure high levels of student achievement, including through developing their skills of independent study. 8. To counsel students with problems and difficulties that arise in their programmes of study or in their lives outside College and which have a bearing on their progress and to refer students to appropriate sources of information, guidance and support. 9. To refer to the Protection team serious concerns regarding tutees personal safety 10. To inform subject teachers (and Heads of Year if necessary) where problems exist which have, or may have, an influence on a student's work and to establish appropriate courses of action.

11. To advise about and monitor students' applications to employment, further education or higher education, referring students on to Student Services and outside advisors as necessary. 12. To prepare draft and final references for all students in the tutor group. 13. To provide appropriate learning opportunities in tutorial time on topics identified by those responsible for the tutorial programme or by the tutor him or herself. 14. To inform SRO staff of any changes in a student's circumstances including home address and parent contact address and telephone number, and to supervise the checking of information held on the College Database. 15. To participate in procedures to develop and improve tutorial policy, and ensure the quality of the programme. 16. To keep abreast of best practice in tutorial policy and undertake training necessary to develop skills and awareness. 17. To undertake any other duties commensurate with this post as the Principal may from time to time decide. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
