Research Interests - Characterization of novel magnetic multifunctional nanoparticles using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Atomic/Magnetic Force Microscopy (AFM/MFM). The magnetic nanoparticles are scientifically notable as Contrast Agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and as possible vectors for local pharmacological treatment (drug delivery), as well as for hypertermic treatment on tumor molecules. - Studies of magnetic properties on molecular magnets and low-dimensional magnetic clusters using NMR and Muon Spin Resonance. Systems contain a core of metallic ions (till 30) magnetically isolated one each other by an organic shield. This structural property allow fundamental studies of single molecule (single molecule magnets, SMM, or molecular nanomagnts, MNM) using bulk quantities of sample. MMM/SMM materials are interesting because they put togheter the macroscopic properties of a bulk magnet and the quantum properties of nanoscale systems opening novel possibilities for technological applications (qubit, magneto-caloric effect, etc.). The fundamental magnetic properties of these materials are deeply studied in order to give 2

suggestions for the synthesis process of new materials with proper characteristics for the technological applications. - Visualization, morpho-dimensional characterization and supramolecular organization of heterologous membrane proteins in Xenopus laevis oocyte by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), in particular proteins as possible targets for pharmacological therapy (GAT1 e CFTR). Conformational changes of these protein complex in physiological conditions were studied for correlating these changes with the biological model. - Development of novel magnetic highly-sensitive biosensors for applications in the Health Science (for instance for the detection of biological marker in everyday medical analysis) and Environmental fields. The study of the problems related to the biosensors realization (the type of analyte, magnetic nanoparticles, etc.) and the sensitivity of the detection method of the MFBs (magnetic field biosensors) using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and SQUID magnetometry was undertaken. In the past structural, morphological and phase transition studies on macromolecular systems for advanced applications were my research interests. A contribution to an improved comprehension of the molecular organization and the structural order of materials in the solid state was the purpose of research work. Wide Angle X-ray Scattering on powders, fibers and single crystals and Small Angle X-ray Scattering on thin films and bulk are the main techniques that were used. These X-ray diffraction techniques were supported by molecular modeling and also 13 C-NMR-MAS spectroscopy and optical and electronic microscopy data were used, obtaining results otherwise unachievable. The polythiophenic systems, the syndiotactic-1,2-polydienes systems and the polyolefins-layered silicate nanocomposites were investigated.
