2 IIT AND IIT CENTERS IN THE WORLD Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a research institute that adopts the organizational model of a private law foundation. IIT is overseen by Ministero dell'istruzione, dell'università e della Ricerca and Ministero dell'economia e delle Finanze (the Italian Ministries of Education, Economy and Finance). The Institute was set up according to Italian law 326/2003 with the objective of promoting excellence in basic and applied research and fostering Italy s economic development. 2

3 IIT RESEARCH PROGRAMS The scientific activity is divided into 11 research programs. 5 FUNDING MECHANISM (last update: December 20 th 2015) PUBLIC FUNDING Yearly public funding amounting to 96 million approx. (89% of which goes to research, 11% to support activities) to support activities 89% to research 11% INDEPENDENT FUNDING From 2006 onwards, the foundation has received private and no-profit funding for more than 130 million euros thanks to successful application to competitive projects and industrial partnerships. Between the main projects there is Graphene Flagship (European project for the development of graphene and two-dimensional materials), the joint lab with INAIL in rehabilitations and 11 ERC grants (European Research Council). From 2005: 18 european projects, 17 national and international funding projects, around 60 industrial projects (for a value of 22 million euros). M M

8 FIELD-WEIGHTED CITATION IMPACT The absolute number of publications is not significant in itself to make a comparison of the products released by research institutions as it depends on the number of researchers and the institution s longevity. Thanks to Scopus data one of the greatest databases for the collection of abstracts and scientific citations - the FWCI (Field-Weighted Citation Impact) has been defined.
