2 General information The MSc course Material Science in Nanosystems (MSN) is run by the Department of Nanotechnology, one of the departments at the Faculty of Physics since The department is running postgraduate level courses targeted towards modern science and industry requirements. As well as running postgraduate level courses, the department is extremely active in research funded by the Russian Science Foundation, Russian Foundation for Basic Research and Ministry of Education in collaboration with partners in Europe, China and US. The course has been structured through discussions with the Russian Academy of Sciences and Industry Advisory Group working in the field of Nanotechnology and Microsystems with the aim to meet highest requirements. Two qualifications are offered to students: the research qualification and the engineering one, between which students can choose. In general, however, the programme is research-oriented. The aim of the course is to give graduate students a thorough grounding in the skills necessary for successful career in science or high-tech industries, in which the manufacture of multi-functional devices with dimensions in the micron or nanometre range is fundamental to wealth creation. The MSN Master programme is aimed at the study of material science and involves the acquisition of skills in nanomaterials synthesis and investigation of their properties that will enable to develop functional systems and devices. The MSN programme presupposes a harmonious combination of the theoretical education and the practical training, the latter involving the use of up-to-date equipment, both research and technological. In the course of studying, the students have an opportunity to carry out their work not only in the laboratories of the Nanotechnology Department, but also in the ones of Research Institutes of the Southern Federal University (SFedU). The Nanotechnology Department of the SFedU Faculty of Physics is the core unit of the Southern Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (the RAS SSC). The leading researchers of the RAS SSC deliver lectures to the students of the Nanotechnology Department and supervise their research work. One more advantage is that students can undertake their research training and internship at the RAS SSC. The courses of lectures, practical laboratory training and research programmes for students are based on the results of the various research projects that have been carried out by the staff of the Nanotechnology Department for a number of years. Long-term experience enables the staff to offer high-quality professional training in the area of nanomaterials synthesis by means of such physical methods as radio-frequency sputtering and pulsed laser deposition. All courses within the MSN programme are based on international standards. The staff of the Nanotechnology Department undergoes regular training in the laboratories of leading international universities, which enables them to transfer knowledge and share their experience with the students who carry out their own research. Due to such policy, the Nanotechnology Department can be proud its well-qualified teaching staff that assists students in becoming well-qualified professionals in the area of advanced technology. The MSN programme was developed in accordance with the standards of European universities that were adopted by the SFedU Nanotechnology Department in the process of collaboration with the several European laboratories and universities, such as the University Montpellier-2 (France), the University of Orléans (France), the University of Picardie (France), École Centrale de Paris (France), the University of Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico, the United States), 2

3 the University of Aveiro (Portugal), the University of Porto (Portugal) and the Swiss-Norwegian Beam Lines at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SNBL at ESRF) (Grenoble, France). In 2014 the MSN programme received international accreditation by ACQUIN agency (Bayreuth, Germany). Applicants to the MSN Master programme are required to have a bachelor degree in nanotechnology, physics, chemistry or applied physics. The training within the MSN programme is full-time. It is provided both on the statefunded basis (funded by government budget) and on the fee-paying basis (educational contracts are signed between students and the university under which all educational costs are fully recovered by students). The duration of the full-time Master programme is 2 years. No opportunities of part-time or extramural studies are provided under the MSN Master programme. All international students studying at the Faculty of Physics are provided with excellent accommodation in the residence located in the SFedU campus. The Faculty of Physics hosts the SFedU Centre for Interaction with International Students that functions as a consultation and support centre for international students. International students intending to study at Southern Federal University should take a one-year foundation course: General Russian language course, mathematics, physics, and engineering graphics. Students are taught the Russian language in small groups of 10; other subjects in groups of 16. Classes are held six days a week for 4-6 hours per day. Foundation Course duration: 1 academic year (2 semesters). More than 50% of the time is devoted to the study of the Russian language. At the end of the academic year all students take exams in the Russian language (First level certificate) and in the majors. Upon successful completion they ll be awarded with a certificate. This certificate is essential for admission to master course. Starting date for students of Foundation Course is September, 15. 4 Course description In accordance with the Federal Standard of Higher Professional Education, the duration of the MSN Master programme is 4 semesters. The academic year is divided into the autumn and spring semesters. Within the first year of study, the autumn semester lasts 18 weeks, and the spring semester 18 weeks. The second year of study begins with 12 weeks of classroom studies (within the autumn semester), which are followed by two practical internships: 14 weeks of pedagogical internship and 12 weeks of scientific research one. Four more weeks are given for completing the Master thesis and getting ready for the thesis defence. The table below demonstrates how the courses are divided between semesters. Graduates of the MSN programme are in demand and readily employed in Russian Academy of Sciences, Research institutes, industry and outside Russia as well. Several our recent graduates obtained PhD fellowships in Europe and already obtained PhD degree: O. Maslova (University of Orleans, France, 2014) and R. Shakhovoy (University of Orleans, France, 2015). V. Pushkarev is preparing his PhD Thesis in Prague (Institute of Physics, Czech Academy of Sciences). Two our graduates O. Konevtsova and D. Levshov obtained double PhD degree according to agreement with the University Montpellier-2 (France) and SFedU in Starting from 2014 two recent graduates I. Golushko and V. Trotsenko are unrolled in double- PhD-diploma courses at the University Montpellier-2 and at the University of Picardy (France), respectively. 5

6 Scientific research training is provided to the MSN students by the following laboratories of the Nanotechnology Department of the SFedU Faculty of Physics: Laboratory of Raman Spectroscopy Laboratory of Atomic Force Microscopy Laboratory of Scanning Electron Microscopy Laboratory of X-ray Diffraction Laboratory of Nanomaterials Laboratory of Ferroelectric Thin Films Within the laboratory training courses students are provided with an opportunity to get first-hand experience working with laboratory equipment and obtaining the experimental data themselves. The processing of the experimental data is always computer-aided. Within the MSN programme the following forms of course delivery and academic activity organization are used: lectures, seminars, written home assignments, practical tasks, laboratory tasks, supervised self-study (home-written test papers), the preparation and presentation of reports. Some of the lectures may be delivered in the English language. 6

7 All MSN Master students are provided with a broad range of practical and laboratory training opportunities, including the training on the sophisticated research equipment, and modern software (COMSOL multiphysics) which makes it possible to achieve the objectives of the MSN programme. Upon graduation, students are awarded with diplomas containing the supplement (the transcript) which shows their academic achievement and the workload in each particular discipline course. The supplement always contains the full list of the discipline courses studied within the Master degree programme where the exam and test results in each particular discipline course are indicated. In addition to that, the diploma supplement contains the list of all the practical training and research training courses undertaken by the student, as well as the title of the Master thesis and the grade awarded by the State Certification Committee upon the Master thesis defence. The European supplement will be attached to the Master degree diplomas apart from the Russian-language supplement, which will enable the MSN graduates to apply to foreign universities for postgraduate studies. 7
