Scope: This document defines the Modbus configuration, protocol and data configuration for the ADI Matrix Alarm Panel serial interface (Z-Card). Serial Communication: RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 (Select with jumpers on Z-Card) Baud Rate: 9600, 19200, 38400 baud (Select with DIP switch on Z-Card) Parity: None Stop Bits: 1 or 2 Data Bits: 8 Modbus Functions: Modbus Mode: Slave Modbus Address: 1-8 (Consult factory for other options) Transmission Mode: RTU LED Control: Function Code: 16 (10H) PRESET MULTIPLE REGISTERS Each display lamp (LED) or horn shall have 3 control bits. To control LEDs, these values are written by the host into a sequence of holding registers (4 references). Control Bit Functions: Bit 3 Bit 2 Bit 1 0 0 0 = LED Off 0 0 1 = LED On Steady 0 1 0 = LED Slow Blink (1 Hz) 0 1 1 = LED Fast Blink ( 2 Hz) 1 0 0 = LED Fire Alarm Pattern: Fire Alarm

1 0 1 = LED Supervisory Pattern: Supervisory 1 1 0 = LED Trouble Pattern: Trouble 1 1 1 = LED Gas Pattern: Gas Reading Switches thru the Z-Card: Function Code 2 (READ INPUT STATUS) Each switch shall have 1 status bit. These discrete inputs are 1 references. Function: Bit 1 0 = Off 1 = On

Additional Modbus commands supported: Function Code: 03 READ HOLDING 4 REGISTERS Function Code: 06 PRESET SINGLE 4 REGISTER Panel Status Bit: The ADI Matrix Alarm Panel controller (Z-Card) provides a status bit that toggles at a Hz rate while the panel controller is in an operational mode. This bit shall be at address 1x001 (the first bit in the 1 Input Register field). Lamp/Beeper Test: The lamp test switch on the ADI Matrix Alarm Panel shall provide an output status bit. This bit shall be at address 1x002 (the second bit in the Input Register field). Logic in a remote controller is required to decode this bit and activate all of the panel s lamps and beepers. System Health Lamp: The ADI Matrix Alarm Panel shall provide a lamp to monitor the operational status of the remote controller. The lamp shall be activated (ON) in the normal communication state and be extinguished (OFF) by the Z-Card if no messages are received from the host controller within ten seconds. This indicator is not addressable by the host and is not controlled by the holding registers.

The Z-Card has (40) outputs available on connector #2, and (40) inputs on connector #1. Each connector has two rows of (22) tabs, so the connectors are often referred to as "22/44" connectors. Switches and LEDs cannot be mixed on a single connector. Refer to the wiring tabulations for point assignments. The row of connector tabs with alpha designations is oriented on the top of the driver board, and the letters "A" and "Z" are marked on each board to indicate this orientation. Notice that the letters G, I, O, and Q are not used. The LEDs should be wired with a positive common, as shown on the typical LED schematic below. A current-limiting resistor must be wired in series with the LED. Most LEDs require an operating current of about 15 to 20 milliamps. A typical resistor for a dot LED, driven by five volts DC, would be 220 ohms. When using five volt power, a 1/4 watt resistor rating is sufficient. Higher values of resistors must be used when the LEDs are driven by voltages greater than five volts. For switches, notice that all inputs are connected to a scan bus that is an isolated line read by the Z-Card. Do NOT connect this line to positive or negative power supplies.
