Day 1 of 3 Light Energy: Transparent, Translucent, Opaque Transparent Allows ALL light to pass through itself Translucent Allows SOME light to pass through, but not all light Opaque Allows NO light to pass though at all Examples: clear glass windows Examples: plexi glass plastic wrap/bubble wrap Examples: wood cardboard Day 2 of 3 What is Reflection? the bouncing back of light rays from a surface What is Refraction? the bending of light rays as they move from one material into another material 1
Transmitted: light can be transmitted through clear object transmitted light that bends as it passes through is refracted Absorbed: light is absorbed by objects ex: the red apple absorbs ALL the colors of white light (orange, yellow, gree, blue, indigo, and violet) except... RED (it's what we see!) Reflection Station 1: Mirror Mazes What did you observe: light travels in a line light can be bent and directed using mirrors What common technology do we use to demonstrate this? periscopes, telescopes, cameras 2
Reflection Station 2: Copy Cat CD What did this station teach you about light energy? light travels in straight lines, light can be reflected, and reflecting light can create optical illusions Reflection Station 3: Laser Tag What is it called when light bounces off an object? reflection What concepts about light energy did this station teach you? light travels in a straight line light can be reflected using a series of mirror and directed to a target 3
Reflection Station 4: Reflection Reactions What did this station teach you about light energy? light travels in straight lines light can be reflected reflecting light can create optical illusions Reflection Station 5: What's the Angle? Light will bounce off a mirror at the same angle that it hits the mirror this is called reflection. What did this station teach you about light energy? light travels in straight lines light can be reflected reflecting light can create optical illusions 4
produced when one form of energy is changed Form of energy travels in a straight line What is light? the light we see is part of a group of waves called the electromagnetic spectrum! can travel through empty space where is no air a vacuum travels in waves of different lengths outward from a source http://id.mind.net/~zona/mstm/physics/light/rayoptics/reflection/reflection1.html Reflections 5
Light Energy_Coelho.notebook When light passes through media/material of different densities the light can be refracted, or "bent." Concave lenses: thicker on the edges than in the middle and cause light rays to diverge (SPREAD OUT) used to MINIMIZE (make smaller) Convex lenses: thicker in the middle than on the edges and cause the light rays to converge (come TOGETHER) A convex lens in the path of light will spread the beam of light over a larger surface Convex lenses are used as MAGNIFIERS Light Refraction Station 2: The Broken Pencil How did the pencil change in the four different types of liquid? Why do you think the pencil appeared to change again? What do we mean when we say the light bent what do we call that? REFRACTING! How is this different from reflection? When light reflects, the light rays are sent back When light refracts, the light rays are either spread apart or pushed together to make the image appear different What does it mean to refract light? As light travels through different types of matter it spreads out or gets pushed together. This changes the way we see the images light is going through 6
Light Energy_Coelho.notebook Water Prism Draw and describe what happens: Prisms refract light. Prisms create rainbows of light as they split the light into its wavelengths. Create a technical drawing of a prism as it interacts with light...describe what happens the light as it passes through the sides of the of the prism: Do you know ROY G.
