Coburg Special Developmental School 1 August - 12 August 2016 Principal s Report Dear Coburg SDS Community It has been another great week at Coburg SDS. We had our Olympics Day events on Wednesday and all of the students had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting activities. I have been heavily involved in discussions surrounding the building works that are to be conducted over the months to come. During the works some of our classes will need to change classrooms temporarily. The short term disruption will lead to a much better learning environment for our students with better toileting facilities and better outdoor play space. Some of the works will involve the installation of new playground equipment which is currently in the planning stages at the moment. The cost of the works are being funded by the Department of Education and Training and will not involve using local school funds. Coburg SDS 1 August - 12 August 2016 Volume 5, Issue 14 Inside this Issue: Principal s Report 1 Victorian Premier s Reading Challenge ^ Fundraiser 2 Our staff have been undertaking a number of professional development sessions all year. The most recent have included sessions surrounding autism and the use of picture exchange cards to support our student s choice making. It has been great to see our staff s dedication to continue their own professional learning to support the work they are doing in the class room with our students. Café Coburg - Parents Welcome 3 Book Week - Dress Up Day 4-5 Baseroom News 6-7 Book Week is coming up, it commences on the 22/08. There will be plenty of festivities over the week. Coburg SDS is famous for its fancy dress events and I am sure this year s Book Week festivities will see plenty of our favourite literary characters making a visit to the school. If you can make it to one of our events or to the Book Fair we would love to see you here Parent Sessions/Calendar 8 Parents Resource Hub 9 Important Information 10-12

Café Coburg - Parents are Welcome Café Coburg Review 4/8/16 Café Coburg was running on less than usual school staff this week, which meant that they did not open their café, but delivered their delicious meals to staff and parents. Two parents took up the opportunity to have lunch from our café and were very pleased with their meal. It would be great to see more parents have lunch at school next time we open the café to parents. The meal costs $5 and the students are so proud of their efforts. The dish of the day was lasagne again and it was perfect! Justin said it was better than his mum s! Well done Room 8 Sally Smith Café Coburg Review 11/8/16! Café Coburg did a fantastic job today! Lauren was away, but with the help of Liz, Marilyn & Anshula, a great delivery service was offered to staff for their lunch. The dish of the day was Chicken and noodle stir fry. People kept on popping into my office while I was eating my meal because they could smell it, and it was delicious! Victor and Alex delivered the meal to my office and Ryan and Victor cooked the meal. It was so delicious I forgot to take a photo until I had nearly finished it. Well done Room 8. The book fair will open on Monday 22 nd August and close on Friday 26 th August. We are looking for some parents to help us run the Book Fair during the day. If you can help please ring the school and let Angelina or Sally know. Students and families will be able to buy books at the fair. This will be a great time to stock up on birthday and Christmas presents. Each class will be visiting the Book Fair during the week. If students see a book they are interested in, they will bring home a wish list to let you know. If you want to buy the book, just sent in the wish list with the payment. We hope you all take the opportunity to visit the Book Fair and stock up with some great books. 1 August - 12 August 2016 Page 5

Baseroom News Hi welcome to Room 9 at the baseroom. Our students are learning lots of things and have done many interesting and fun activities this year. The students have written about some things they have done and wanted to tell you about. All the work on this page has been written by the students [with some spelling corrections] Students who are unable to write have used PECS to make their comments. LITERACY Every morning I do writing and spelling in my folder. I always use my writing checklist and I sometimes read a book. I really like to do puzzles but I have to finish my work first. My favourite activity is drawing a picture about my writing. I have also written two books. Krystal I like to use the thesaurus to find really interesting words. I wrote a book about Pokemon because I like Pokemon. The best part about writing the book was typing it. I also like reading about space and I have done a space quiz of interesting facts for everyone. Iman Iman s space quiz 1 How many earths could fit into the sun? 2How long does it take the sun to orbit the earth? 3 What are the four largest planets? Every day I do writing and spelling I am getting much smarter at spelling. My mum is pleased. I am going to read a book to Sylvia s class. Sedef I like the ipad Truth I like the ipad Nawaal [with PECS] I like the big puzzle Star I like the ipad Emin [with PECS] I like Daren [with PECS] EXERCISES Every morning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we do exercises with Sue. We play follow the leader and then do step ups and then running. I am always the fastest. Sue comes last. I love running. Krystal THE HEALTHY EATING CAFÉ On Friday we have a café we set up special placemats and put the open sign outside. Room 9 and 10 are the customers. We give them fake money. They choose from the menu Sedef is the waitress and I say the specials. We make the food. It should be healthy but sometimes it is not especially the chocolate cake which is popular but I like strawberry best. The students can bring toys to play while they wait. Krystal is the chef. She likes to be the chef. Cheryl watches to see how we go. Nina watches and sometimes helps. The best part is the end because we all go to room 10 and Nina and Toni clean up. Iman 1 August - 12 August 2016 Page 6

Baseroom News Cont... THE FIREMANS VISIT Last Wednesday the firemen came to talk to us about firemen so we will know all about firemen. They told us they save animals to.
