ASTON ALL SAINTS CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS LETTER SPRING TERM 2017 A HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our families! Dear Parents, I hope you have all enjoyed the Christmas holidays with time to relax with family and friends even though it is such a busy time of year. Thank you to everyone who attended our various Christmas events during December, I hope you all enjoyed them as much as the children and staff did. I am sure you will agree that the concerts were excellent this year due in no small part to all the hard work of the children and staff! Thank you also to everyone who very generously donated gifts for our hamper raffle and of course bought hamper raffle tickets. Along with the sale of concert tickets and the fund raising afternoon, 2,013.00 in total, was raised for school funds. Thank you too to the members of our Friends of Aston group who helped organise the Christmas afternoon, as well as the sale of Christmas cards and tea towels. As always a huge thank you to our team of teaching assistants who help organise the Christmas concert costumes and the hamper raffle too. Crossing Patrol Parents will remember that last year Rotherham Council announced that they were considering ceasing funding crossing patrols for some Rotherham Schools. Our school was one of these schools and in November 2016 we were informed that, from the end of March 2017, the council will no longer fund the crossing patrol on Lodge Lane. We are told that there is not enough traffic to warrant a patrol. However, I am

sure parents will be relieved to know that, the Governing Board have agreed that school will fund this from the beginning of April 2017. The Governing Board feel strongly that without this patrol, children s safety could be compromised. The patrol will continue to be manned at the same times at the beginning and end of the school day from April 2017. Do you read with your child? Please could we remind all parents how important it is to read with your child every day; it is part of every child s homework, every week. All children have a home school reading record which parents can write in when they have listened to their child read. This only needs to be for a short time each evening; listen to your child read and then ask them some questions about what they have read it is vitally important that the children understand what they have read. Reading is the key to ALL learning in school! Why not make it a new year s resolution to read with your child for just a few minutes every day this is not just important for the Foundation and Key Stage One children but for every child all the way up to the end of Y6. Help with reading in school We recently sent a letter home to see if any parents or grandparents are interested in listening to children read in school. If anyone would like to volunteer to do this, please contact the school office. Thank you ABACUS MATHS We recently purchased a new maths scheme which is web based. All children have received a log in so that they can access the website at home. Teachers allocate games and activities for the children to do on the website; this is in addition to their homework. On the Abacus website teachers have noticed that some children have not yet accessed the

website and if parents are having difficulty with the log in process please chat to your child s class teacher who will be able to help you. SCHOOL DRESS As soon as the weather begins to improve our thoughts will [eventually] turn to summer clothes and I always like to give a reminder about our school dress code in the spring term news letter. This is as follows: Burgundy sweatshirt Burgundy fleece Burgundy cardigans White or yellow polo shirts Black or grey trousers or skirts or shorts in the summer Yellow, green or burgundy checked dresses for the girls in the summer [not blue or purple] Thank you for continuing to support our school uniform. The order forms for school uniform are on the parent notice board in the Foundation classroom and in Infant Centre Bay and on the school website. Reminder!!! PLEASE ensure that all school uniform is clearly labelled with your child s name! We still have lots of uniform where we are unable to trace the owner because there is no name. School book bags and back packs are available from the school office and usually do not need to be ordered. PE shorts and tee shirts are available from the school office; please make sure that your child has PE kit in school every week so that they can take part in all PE lessons. Please also make sure that they have suitable footwear for outdoor PE lessons. ATTENDANCE Each week we display weekly attendance figures in classrooms so that parents and children are aware of attendance figures for each class. Well done to those classes who gained 100% attendance for a full week in the autumn term. We have just received a reward from Rotherham Council congratulating us on exceeding our attendance target for 2015-16; our attendance last year was 96.8%. Well done to all our school families for helping us to achieve this keep up the good work this year! The award is displayed in our entrance.

If parents need to request leave of absence they need to complete a leave request form. These are available from the main notice boards in Infant Centre Bay and Foundation classroom and on the school website. Thank you to all those parents who have made a determined effort to take holidays during the school holidays. Here is a reminder of the current criteria agreed by governors. Head Teachers are now no longer able to grant any absence in term time except under exceptional circumstances. This is unlikely, however, to be granted for the purpose of a family holiday. Governors at Aston C of E Primary School have also agreed that where a request for leave of absence is deemed to be in exceptional circumstances, permission will not be granted: If the child has an attendance level that falls below 96% for the previous three terms should the leave go ahead. If the student is due to take any examinations or SATs during this period. [SATs 2017 will be week commencing 8 th May] Requests for leave of absence must also be made to the school in advance. DfE regulations do not allow any absences to be authorised after they have been taken. Leave of request forms are available from the school office or the school website. DfE have also stated that parents can be fined by the local authority for taking their child on holiday during term time without consent from the school. Further information about this can be found at www.dfe.gov.uk Also to help with the planning of holidays, the dates of holidays for the coming year as well as the INSET days are published on the school website in the annual calendar and timetable. If parents do not have access to a computer or printer, please contact the school office and we will happily provide a hard copy. If your child cannot attend school because they are ill please contact the school office as early as possible. There is usually someone in the school office from 7.30am each day to take messages. Alternatively, parents could email the message to the school email; emails are checked regularly. aston-cofe.junior-infant@rotherham.gov.uk Here are the attendance figures for the autumn term, along with Local Authority figures where they are available

haven t requested one, please call in to the school office and we will be happy to provide a copy. Dance lessons This term we are very excited that dance teacher, Louise Wells, will be working again with all classes in school; she will be teaching a wide variety of dance, based on the current work being followed by each class. As parents are aware all schools receive funding for PE; Sport Premium, to develop different aspects of PE in school. For the spring term we are using our sport premium money to develop dance. Curriculum Week for parents week beginning 30 th January All parents will shortly receive an invitation to attend lessons during our spring term curriculum week. Letters will follow shortly. Friday 27 th January All the children in school will be attending a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk in the school hall. This will be performed by a professional theatre group and the cost will be funded totally by school. WHITBY WEEK Monday 13 th March to Friday 17 th March As many parents know, Rotherham Council closed Habershon House near Filey at the end of 2016. As a school we were greatly saddened by this as we have used this as a residential stay for our children for many,

many years. We have, however, been able to book a hotel in Whitby and I hope all the children in Y5 have a fantastic week there. I am really looking forward to spending the week with them on this new residential experience for Aston C of E! Mrs Mottershaw, Mrs Gazda, Mrs Melia and Mr Davies will also be accompanying the children. Parents of children in Y5 should have already received an invitation to a meeting about this residential on Thursday 26 th January. MUSIC WEEK week beginning 20 th March Children will be taking part in special music activities to which parents will also be invited information nearer the time. Parents will also be invited to join their child s music lesson. During the following week there will be two music assemblies Wednesday 29 th March for Key Stage Two and Thursday 30 th March for Foundation and Key Stage One; both assemblies will start at 9.15am and as usual parents will be invited to stay for tea and coffee afterwards. Wednesday 29 th March - Open Evening for all classes. Some teachers will also hold an open evening on Tuesday 28 th March. Letters will be sent after half term Wednesday 29 th March, Wednesday 5 th April and Thursday 6 th April there will be an orchestra practice please don t forget those instruments!
