Second Grade Orientation Packet Herod Elementary 2013-2014

ND Graders are Jet-tastic! Parents, Welcome to Second Grade! I am thrilled to be teaching second grade this year and working with you and your child. This is a very special year in your child s school career. Second grade is a time to experience important transitions and acquire new skills. While

first grade was spent learning to read, our second grade focus is reading to learn. I hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child s years of schooling! It is important that we all work together to ensure the success of your child. As a parent, you are a vital part of the learning experience. Thanks, Mrs. Logue

Mrs. Logue s Class Schedule 7:45-8:25 Morning Work/Spelling 8:25-8:55 Writing 8:55-9:45 Reading 9:48-10:41 Specials 10:45-11:25 Workstations/Social Studies 11:30-12:00 Morning Work/Spelling 12:00-12:20 Writing 12:20-12:50 Lunch 12:50-1:20 Recess 1:20-2:20 Reading/Social Studies 2:20-3:00 Workstations 3:00-3:10 Pack Up

General Information Arrival: School begins at 7:45 a.m. Students need to be ready to begin class at that time. Arriving promptly begins responsibility for being punctual and helps your child feel prepared for the day instead of starting behind. If a student arrives early (before the first bell at 7:45), they are to report to the cafeteria where they will monitored and then released to class when the first bell rings. No students should be in the hallways before class begins for safety concerns. Breakfast: Students will have the option to eat breakfast in the classroom from 7:45-8:05 a.m. If your child arrives after 8:00, they may not be served breakfast. Lunch: Our lunch from 12:20-12:50. Adults are welcome to join students for lunch. Please check in at the front office and meet your child in the cafeteria. If your child purchases lunch from the cafeteria, please keep their account updated. Reminder notes from the cafeteria of low accounts will be sent home if needed. Please try to pay the front office directly.

Birthdays: All children like to be invited to a party. To avoid any hurt feelings, we cannot allow any birthday invitations to be delivered in class unless all of the students are invited. Feel free to send birthday snacks such as cupcakes or cookies, to share with classmates. Classes have approximately 25 students in each. Toys: Those backpacks hold a lot of things! Please remember that toys from home are not allowed at school. We have plenty of things to keep your child busy all day! Toys found out during class time will be taken up from students and returned at the end of the school year. Supplies: Please make sure that your child comes prepared with all needed materials according to the supply list. Your child will also need a water bottle. As the year progresses, your child may need additional pencils, folders, glue, or crayons. A small reminder note will be sent home when this is necessary. Homework: Homework is not intended to last all night-only about 30 minutes + 20 minutes of reading including filling out the book list. Please check over homework to ensure quality work. Homework should return to school correct. Spelling lists will be copied into their spelling spirals. Demonstrating responsibility is an expected behavior and being irresponsible could result in a

lesser conduct grade. Please send a note for excused homework. Spelling: Spelling will be different in 2 nd grade this year. Your child will receive a new patterned list every two weeks. The test will be on the 2 nd Friday after the list is passed out. The test will include some list words as well as other words that follow the same spelling pattern. Book Bags: This year students will be permitted to bring home a book bag containing books at their reading level for athome practice. Your child should reread what we read in class and not go ahead of the assigned chapter, if that applies. If books are lost or damaged, there will be a fee to replace the books. Please remind your child to be responsible and treat the books with care.

Graded Work/Communication Papers: Please help your child develop responsibility by getting it returned on time. This is a good way for parents and school to communicate. Every Tuesday you will receive a graded work packet, which needs to be signed and returned by Friday. Please go over incorrect answers and have your child correct them with a marker. All of the signed packets will be sent home at the end of the 9 week period. School communication will go home on Thursday. Please take the time to review all items in the folder. Please also sign any necessary school items and return them promptly. Please remind your child to empty his/her folder when he/she returns to school. Recess: We wish for all students to have a safe and enjoyable time on the playground. Encourage your student to follow playground rules and treat others kindly during playtime. There might be a time that children may have to walk due to behavior issues, inability to play safely, or follow directions on the playground. We try to keep this to a minimum and explain it to the children as a lack of free choice play as a consequence. They are still getting physical activity. Homework will be completed at this time if not turning it in is a repeated issue.

Absences: Notes are required for absence of any reason by the registrar. Hot pink absence forms were sent home in the first day folder and extras can be found in the front office. Please use the new hot pink forms when your child is absent to be turned into the registrar. When your child is absent they will be given an allotment of time, based on the days missed, to complete assignments missed. Change in Transportation: If your child has a change in the way he/she will be going home, we need to have the change in written form, via note or email. If we do not receive a written note or email, we will send your child home as usual. If you need to make a change during the day, do so by 1:00 p.m. This is to help your child get home safely. Please help us! Conference Time: Our conference time is from 9:48-10:41 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. As much as I would love visiting with you, it is very difficult to do this during arrival and dismissal of students. If there is something I need to know concerning your child, please write a note or schedule time to meet with me. I am also available before and after school.

Switch Classes: In 2 nd grade we switch classes between two teachers. I teach Reading, Language Arts and Social Studies. Mrs. Heller teaches Math and Science. You will find a calendar that tells which classes your child begins with in their take-home folder.
