Acquisition of Satellite Imagery

Advantages of satellite images - Worldwide coverage - High temporal coverage - Large scale and detailed analysis possible - Satellite images can see more than human eyes (e.g. infrared) - Combination of different sensors

Limitations to work with satellite images - Limited number of available satellite imagery within a certain time frame - Weather constraints for optical data (clouds, haze, etc.) - Spatial resolution versus large scale coverage - response time (new acquisitions) - Costs

Limited number of available satellite images

Weather constraints

Spatial resolution versus large scale coverage IKONOS: 13 x 13 km coverage 1 m spatial resolution SPOT: 60 x 60 km coverage 15 m spatial resolution LANDSAT: 160 x 160 km coverage 30 m resolution Bangladesh

Increasing demand for satellite based crisis information - In the field of - Natural disasters - Technical accidents - Conflicts / humanitarian crisis - Civil security - Earth Observation satellites can provide information for - Disaster management - International humanitarian relief efforts in field - Political decision makers - Security of the citizens

ZKI - Center for Satellite-Based Crisis Information Founded in 2004 (initiatives since 1999) Acquisition and provision of satellite based crisis information Generation of user-driven information products in case of a disaster during all phases of a crisis 24 hours / 7 days on-call duty Established contact points in Germany and Europe as well as in international institutions Extensive Research and Development Training and Exercises (national, EU, international) www.zki.dlr.de

What are Satellite and GIS based information of ZKI? Satellite imagery Geo-Information Systems (GIS) data

DLR ZKI s mapping activities within the crisis cycle Stadium Area, Germany Tsunami risk, Indonesia Preparation/ Prevention Alertness Risk Analysis Disaster Refugee camp, Sudan Reconstruction Transition Phase Relief and Reconstruction Emergency Relief Flood situation, Pakistan

What does DLR ZKI in the field of health mapping? Cooperation between MSF and DLR Study: Geospatial patterns of Buruli Ulcer (BU) in Cameroon Study area: mainly arrondissement Akonolinga, Cameroon Study summary: Showing distribution of BU cases in geographic maps Analysis of spatial patterns by correlating BU case data with environmental factors, e.g. land cover, temperature, soil moisture, precipitation, topography Field data: Case data of infected persons treated at the MSF center (gender, age, home, ): 1131 cases near Akonolinga from 2002 to 2012 Satellite and GIS data: Satellite images for land cover analysis and elevation; Infrastructure data: villages, roads, rivers; Topographic map from 1978

Geospatial patterns of BU in Cameroon Work in progress distribution of BU cases

Geospatial patterns of BU in Cameroon Work in progress - land cover analysis - Land cover analysis using satellite images Clouds Settlement Dense forest Medium/low density forest Agricultural land Bare soil Woodland/Shrubland Wetland Water - Use geo-information, e.g. land cover classification, DEM, population distribution estimation to apply risk factors from literature to study area and indicate certain risk areas

What are the plans of DLR in supporting health care in case of crises? - Support for health care logistics Which roads are accessible (during rainfall period)? Categorization of accessibility Which airstrips are accessible? @ MSF, Comte Food security Crop estimation in fields Precipitation monitoring crop estimation @ MSF, Comte Mapping of spatial patterns in epidemiology Disease distribution Disease dispersion in time (days to weeks)
