It displays major fields experiencing the most growth in wages as a percentage change from year to year. Purpose This report provides information on the earnings of employed college graduates bd on the area of their college major. For college graduates (aged 25 or younger when they received a Bachelor s degree from a Texas public 4-year college), the report displays the number and quarterly wages of those employed. Employment data and earnings are as reported by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The quarterly wages as reported by TWC are from the fourth quarter of the calendar year after each student s graduation year. Data are provided for four years of earnings, so trends might be identified in terms of employment and/or earnings for college graduates bd on the area of their college major. Also included are lists showing the top 15 college major areas ranked by the number of employed graduates and the top 15 college major areas ranked by the highest median fourth quarter wages of graduates for 2012. Data in this report are reported at the statewide level. Data Source Data in this report come from the Texas Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS), the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), and the Texas P-16 Public Education Information Resource (TPEIR). Employment and quarterly earnings data are from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). For more information about the TWC data, visit their website at http://www.twc.state.tx.us/. Data Elements The Texas Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes are used to identify college degree and certificate programs, courses, and declared majors on reports from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The codes are similar to those in the Classification of Instructional Programs taxonomy published by the National Center for Educational Statistics. For in-depth information about the Texas CIP codes, visit the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board website at http://www.txhighereddata.org/interactive/cip/. For this report, the college major area category is not displayed if there are fewer than 10 graduates reported over the four-year earnings period. 5

College Graduation Year Earnings Calendar Year Number of Employed Graduates Academic year that the Bachelor s level degree was earned from a Texas public college. The calendar year after the college graduation year. The number of college graduates who are 25 years old or younger when receiving their Bachelor s or Baccalaureate-level Certificate degrees (from a Texas public 4-year college) and who have earnings data as reported to the TWC for the fourth quarter of the calendar year after their graduation year, are included in this report. In addition, only college graduates who were enrolled in the Texas public school system at some time during 7 th through 12 th grades are included in the data. Average 4 th Quarter Wage Average (or mean) total wages paid during the fourth quarter of the earnings year as reported to TWC. Median 4 th Quarter Wage Median total wages paid during the fourth quarter of the earnings year as reported to TWC. Percentage Change in Number of Employed Graduates The percentage change in number of graduates is calculated as the number of Bachelor s degree graduates employed in the current earnings calendar year minus the number of Bachelor s degree graduates employed in the previous earnings calendar year divided by the number of Bachelor s degree graduates employed in the previous earnings calendar year. Percentage Change in Median Fourth Quarter Wages The percentage change in median fourth quarter wages is calculated as the median fourth quarter wages in the current earnings calendar year minus the median fourth quarter wages in the previous earnings calendar year divided by the median fourth quarter wages in the previous earnings calendar year. 6
