1 FOUR-YEAR CONCURRENT DEGREE PROGRAM LEADING TO A BACCALAUREATE AND A MASTER S DEGREE This program allows exceptionally capable students to combine their last year or two of undergraduate study with graduate study, resulting in the simultaneous completion of both a Baccalaureate degree and a Master s degree.* Students apply to the program during the junior year and no later than the end of their 6 th semester. Before submitting your application to the Committee on Academic Standing, it must be approved by the appropriate department and the Graduate Council, which may place additional requirements on admission to this program. Your application must then be approved by the Committee on Academic Standing, which will determine whether your academic performance has been both outstanding and sufficiently broad. If your application is approved, you must complete a minimum of 34 courses within 8 or 9 semesters and complete the requirements of both the baccalaureate degree and the master s degree. No more than 2 courses may be used to satisfy both baccalaureate concentration requirements and master s requirements. Requirements for Admission to the Concurrent Degree Program Students must have completed or be currently enrolled in courses that fulfill all program requirements at the time of petition. 1. Academic performance: You are expected to be in Good Academic Standing and to have compiled a very strong academic record, one in which two-thirds of your grades are A or S with Distinction. 2. Breadth of study: Your academic program must reflect the goals of a liberal education and particularly the expectation that you take courses that range across the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences. You must take at least 10 courses outside of your area of concentration (e.g., if your concentration is in the social sciences, then the areas outside your area of concentration would be humanities, life sciences, and physical sciences.) Within these 10 credits, you must earn a minimum of 2 credits in each of the three fields outside the area of your concentration. When the two degrees (A.B. and A. M.) are in different fields, the number of courses outside the two fields of specialization may be reduced; the extent of that reduction will depend on the relationship of the two fields, or the interdisciplinary aspect of the two fields. 3. Depth of study: While your concentration provides in-depth study of a particular field, you are also expected to explore other areas beyond the introductory level. In particular, you should develop a course of study that includes a sequence of courses or several courses exploring a particular subject or subjects from multiple perspectives. At minimum, you must earn two credits in one subject outside your area of concentration beyond the introductory level. *There is also a five-year option, which is administered by the Graduate School. This program allows a student, after completing a baccalaureate and graduating from the College, to continue at Brown for a master s degree and to use some courses taken as an undergraduate toward partial satisfaction of the master s course requirements. While the student must be an active undergraduate at the time of application, admission to the graduate program can be deferred for up to two years with approval of the department. Applications for this program are not reviewed by the Committee on Academic Standing. 1
2 APPLYING TO THE CONCURRENT DEGREE PROGRAM In the early stages of planning for the Concurrent Degree Program, you will need to discuss the guidelines and procedures described in this document with your faculty sponsor, undergraduate concentration advisor, and graduate advisor in the appropriate department(s) or program(s). You should discuss the relative merits of pursuing a concurrent degree as opposed to other options, such as completing an honors thesis or applying for the five-year Baccalaureate/Master s program. Prior to submitting an application, you must consult with the Chair of the Committee on Academic Standing (CAS) to discuss the particulars of the application process and the likelihood of receiving the approval of the Committee. The application and all supporting letters of reference should be presented to the Committee on Academic Standing by the end of your sixth term of enrollment. Please have all supporting letters sent to you, and submit your application and all supporting letters as one package to Room 205A, University Hall. Due dates for petitions each month are generally the last Wednesday of each month. Contact Ivone Aubin in Room 205A University Hall for specific dates. Your application should include the Concurrent Bachelor/Master s Application for the Graduate School, which is available on-line under Graduate School Forms on the Graduate School website at Your application will be forwarded to the relevant department for its consideration and approval. ****************************************************************************************** CONCURRENT BACCALAUREATE/MASTER S DEGREE PROGRAM PROPOSAL First Name Middle Initial Last name Banner ID Number Campus Address Address Cell phone # I am proposing the following concurrent degree program: An AB or ScB in and an AM or ScM in. Checklist: I have met with the chair of the Committee on Academic Standing to discuss the application process and, before proceeding with an application, to assess the likelihood of receiving the approval of the Committee. I have attached an explanation of my reasons for pursuing the concurrent degrees, a discussion of how this program will enhance my undergraduate education, and a description of the graduate program I will pursue, including a tentative description of the final research project for the master s degree (if any). 2
3 Student name Banner ID Checklist (cont.): All courses I have taken/will take are listed on the attached forms. (34 courses are required for the concurrent degree program). The graduate representative of the graduate department has signed the second page of the plan, indicating approval of both the general program and the research/thesis plan. I have completed and attached the Concurrent Bachelor/Master s Application for the Graduate School. I have attached the required letters of support as listed below. Letters of Support A faculty member may fulfill more than one of the roles described below. In such cases, the faculty member submits one letter. The department chair of your undergraduate concentration (or a designated representative) must submit an evaluation of your performance in the concentration and a statement of departmental approval. The evaluation must be detailed and review the quality of work done so far in your field of concentration. Your statement should indicate that the program, as outlined, is endorsed by the department. The faculty member who will supervise your master s thesis research or graduate program should submit a statement indicating approval of both the general program and the research/thesis plan. Three faculty members in your area of concentration who know your work from course participation. Two faculty members outside your area of concentration who know your work from course participation. 3
4 Student name Banner ID Concurrent Bachelor and Master s Degree Program Breadth Requirement Worksheet When reviewing petitions for entry into the Four-Year Concurrent Degree Program, the Committee on Academic Standing looks for evidence that students have chosen courses across the curriculum that are consistent with a liberal arts education. Some courses offered by Brown do not fit within the spirit of this requirement and therefore will not be accepted. In the physical sciences, for example, CAS accepts courses in Math, Physics, Geology, and Chemistry because the disciplines are part of the traditional liberal arts curriculum. Students are strongly advised to consult with the Chair of CAS to ensure that the courses they are taking to fulfill the breadth requirement will meet Committee expectations. The breadth requirement stipulates that students must complete at least ten courses outside of the concentration and a minimum of two courses in each of the major divisions of the College. In order to apply for the Concurrent Bachelor s/master s Degree Program, you must satisfy the program s breadth requirement by the end of your sixth semester of enrollment (spring semester of junior year). Use the sheet below to track your progress toward meeting this requirement. If you are accepted into the program during your sixth semester and do not complete the breadth requirement, you will be withdrawn from the program.
