How to access online journals and ebooks using EBSCOhost From NTC website - www.ntc.edu.au From the first opening page of the website click library tab The second page shows what the library offers online Click on Religion & Philosophy Collection or ebook Collection to access journals and digital books in pdf format. Now you see a new window, which is the EBSCOhost login page. It opened in a new window independent of NTC website. Bookmark the independent page for future easy access to the databases. - Note: At this stage the general ID and password are needed. Please contact the Librarian for login details. This general sign in detail is changed regularly. It is meant for enrolled students, Faculty members and lecturers. Please do not share. 1
The login opens to a choice: - EBSCOhost Research Databases for consulting online from desktop or laptop - EBSCO ebooks Mobile for mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets, etc. You need the EBSCO App from the App store (free). See annexe (p.9) on how to get ebooks on mobile devices. -- From desktop and laptop click EBSCOhost Research Databases. It opens the page below. -- There are three (3) choices. It is possible to go only to journals or only to ebooks. The option is yours. Just tick your option(s) and continue. - Religion and Philosophy Collection is for journal articles - The middle option, Ebook Collection (EBSCOhost), is where ebooks owned by NTC are found. For instance, some textbooks for NTC subjects. - The last option is the ebook Religion Collection with over 5,000 titles as of January 2016, and growing. It is possible to combine the databases: just tick all or just what s needed. - 2
Journals Once Religion and Philosophy Collection is clicked a new window opens for your research through journals. There are 300 journals to choose from. It is possible to search by title, author, subjects, journal titles, etc. Click on select a field and pick one. See example below In the example above only a subject word is indicated as keyword, which returned 25,446 results for culture. It is possible to narrow the search by adding more words. For instance, add theology on the second line. The search narrowed the results to 2,346 as shown below. Research can be a time consuming activity. The advice is to persist and try different options. 3
It is possible to search directly within a specific journal. For this click on Publications on the top left bar - Once in Publications you can access a specific journal by writing its title in the search bar, or by clicking on a letter to get a list to choose from. See below. Once a specific journal is open, the search is your choice. 4
Clicking a year takes you to issues. Pick, click and see the articles featured for a specific journal vol. and issue. When a student is consulting online journals and wishes to switch to ebooks or vice versa: Click on Choose databases Pick the database; in this case ebook Religion Collection (EBSCOhost) and click OK. This will open the ebook Religion Collection. Note: It is possible to combine the ebook databases. Just tick both before clicking OK. The same type of window as for searching journals is now open. The same options for titles, authors, etc. are available in the Select a Field (optional) or simply write a subject word as keyword as in the example below, which returned 13 items. 5
Again, the search is not always as precise as opting for specific titles or/and authors, etc. Try different subject words and see what comes up according to the topic being researched. Options for reading ebooks: - EPUB Full Text: open the book directly on the computer without having to download. - Download: Student needs personal sign in details in order to download ebooks (see) below for registration. - Table of Contents: With this option, it is possible to jump directly to a specific chapter within an ebook - Most relevant pages: Suggestions are available when you are not sure where to start within an ebook. -- By clicking on the ebook title, a new window opens detailing the content. The same options (on the left) explained previously are also available when the ebook details are open. Recommendation: click on options and see what s available and relevant; plus, it allows increasing familiarity with the database. From a detailed ebook window, pick Result list to return to the previous list or click on Basic search or Advanced search to begin a new search. 6
ebooks personal (sign in) registration To download an ebook, which is the same as borrowing a book from a library, the student needs a personal sign in. This is done after accessing EBSCOhost databases using the general sign in. This is a personal sign in, meaning that the details for user ID and password are the personal choice of the individual. Click on sign in and follow the prompts to complete this option. Don t forget to put your personal ID and password details in safe and accessible place as a reminder. The Librarian does not have access to this detail, so be advised. After clicking on sign in for borrowing (downloading), the page, below, will come up. First, create an account (follow the prompts) - afterward you will simply - In Folder are the books borrowed. The standard borrowing time is 7 days and there is no limit on the number of ebooks you can borrow, but it is always for a week; then the ebook becomes inaccessible on the computer or the mobile device. Otherwise, students can read, consult ebooks at any time without using the personal sign in for downloading the item. It is even possible to download some pages. This option, as to how many pages are downloadable according to copyright rules, is indicated within the details of an ebook. Please stick to the copyright rules, it s the law. Students needing to insert an ebook in a paper s bibliography can consult the Turabian/Chicago bibliographic style online. A link is accessible in Research Links on NTC website. 7
Note: If you don t have it already you must download Adobe Acrobat Reader software on your desktop or laptop and/or mobile devices, and register a personal Adobe account (Please place Adobe ID and password in a safe place for reminder). Annexe How to access ebooks on mobile devices - Get Adobe Acrobat Reader App - Get EBSCO ebooks App Free from the App store - Create a personal Acrobat account and put the details in a safe place for reminder (if you do not have one already). Note: if you already have an Acrobat account, all is needed is to put the App on the mobile device and use the personal Adobe account details (no need to register a new account) when opening the EBSCO ebooks App for the first time. Note: You need to sign in in Acrobat on EBSCO ebooks on your first use of the ebook App. (Acrobat sign in will come up automatically on EBSCO ebooks when you open the App on your mobile device for the first time). ---- To access (download) ebooks on mobile devices you absolutely need a personal EBSCOhost sign in (ID and password). Note: If you need a personal account for borrowing ebooks, create an account after the general EBSCOhost sign in It is located on the top right of the screen on computer. Note: The mobile device also has a create an account if an item is requested. You can also register a personal account from the mobile device. Please keep the personal sign in details in a safe place as a reminder. ---- NOTE: The first time you use the EBSCOhost App, a window will come up after putting your Acrobat login details. You have to locate the library from which you will download ebooks. Use Australia and Queensland (in Library locator ) and find Nazarene Theological College (in Libraries found). The general sign in page of EBSCOhost will appear. Put in the general sign in details (not the personal one at this stage). 9
Note: Once these details are in, Nazarene Theological College will have registered on your mobile device. This means that on subsequent visits, you will simply click on the College s name, which should appear automatically, to open the search ebooks page. Note: Once you have used the general sign in on a mobile device, that page will not reappear on subsequent visits. It is a onetime deal until the general sign in is changed by the Librarian. The search ebook page will come up If you click on the category Religion, it will take you to the full list of the Religion Collection (over 5,000 titles). It is the only ebook Collection NTC subscribes to at this stage. Rather, try to have a subject or title in mind, write it in the search bar and click - 10
The book requested will come up with a download icon on your mobile device. Click Download (you need a personal sign in for access to this option). Otherwise, it is here that you create a personal account if needed. After clicking Download, the personal sign in window will come up This is where you write down your personal ID and password to borrow ebooks (not the general login details) On the next page, click checkout & Download. Download will start immediately and the book image will appear on you device. A small window popups asking read later or read now. The choice is yours. The loan is for a standard 7 day period. It is possible to renew or download again after the ebook loan period has expired. Explore the possibilities offered with the device, such as underlining important passages, bookmarking pages, etc. - It is possible to return an ebook before the due time. Just follow the prompts on your device. The prompts are marked differently depending on the type of mobile device you own. On a tablet, the icon located on the right side on an ebook, is where to click to return an item.
