A second, smaller reception room provides a cosier sitting area with a lovely outlook over the grounds and countryside beyond. The kitchen and dining areas are well proportioned and feature custom built units and solid wood working surfaces, a wonderful four oven oil fired Aga which provides hot water and has a stone lintel above. In Devon, the name Barton is reserved for a large and important farm which has served, since medieval times at least, as the demesne farm or homefarm of the Lord of the manor, this is it s meaning in the case of Hellions Barton. Dr George Carew bought the land in 1566 and we may assume that the house was completed by about 1570. Dr Carew became the Dean of Exeter in 1571. The present house retains many features to be associated with this date including a good Elizabethan doorway of oak with original fittings, hinges, lock and knocker. Here it is proposed to trace briefly the descent of the house from Dr George Carew onwards. He died in 1583 and left the property to his eldest son Sir Peter Carew. He died young and passed the property to his brother George Carew, who became the Earl of Totnes. He sold it to an East Devon squire Walter Yonge of Colyton on the 1st February 1615. The Yonges continued to own Hellions Barton for the next 177 years until 1792. It was bought by Richard Read in 1792 from Sir George Yonge. The Reads owned the property until 1896 and sold to Sir John Ferguson Davie of Crediton. In 1959 Sir Patrick Ferguson Davie sold to Adam West and the current family have owned Hellions Barton since 1989.
