Rodent Nutrition LABORATORY ANIMAL DIETS AND NUTRITION A laboratory animal s nutritional status influences its ability to reach its genetic potential for growth, reproduction and longevity and to respond to pathogens and other environmental stresses. This presentation aims to give an overview into research diets, their composition both in terms of nutrients and raw materials, and the effect processes such as irradiation and autoclaving can have. PHYTOESTROGENS IN RODENT HEALTH Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring environmental estrogens found in plants. There are 3 main groups of Phytoestrogens: Coumestans, Lignans and Isoflavones. Isoflavones are principally derived from soya and these phytoestrogens in particular have received a lot of attention. The interest has been generated in human health due to the increase of soya based foods and supplements and also in rodent health due to the inclusion of soya protein in many standard rodent diets. Studies into phytoestrogens present a mixed and often contradictory view, frequently resulting in confusion for the researcher. This presentation aims to give an overview of phytoestrogens, the studies and results, what this means for the laboratory industry and should we be looking at soya free or even a phytoestrogen free diet. It will also put some common claims under the spotlight to break them down into the fact, fiction, significance and relevance. Behavior, cagelife and handling of laboratory rats and mice A course about the natural behavior of laboratory rodents, and how we can provide an appropriate environment for them. We touch on senses and mouse/rat communication, including ultrasonic communication, and we discuss ways of improving the animal welfare through enrichment, appropriate handling, habituation to procedures as well as how to avoid stressing the animals and making them even more sensitive.
