Griffith Journalism.

My communications degree was broad enough to offer a taste of all things media related, yet still included the opportunity to develop hands-on skills via the expertise of experienced industry professionals and work experience. Natasha Jobson. B105 newsreader. Griffith Journalism graduate. Access all areas of the media with Griffith Journalism. At Griffith Journalism we recognise that today s news media are increasingly diverse and dynamic. As such, our tailored program has been specially designed to give you access to as many areas of the media as possible, so that when it comes time to begin your career you have the skills necessary to succeed in any workplace. The Griffith Journalism program offers an exciting combination of classroom-based courses and practical experience to fully prepare you for job placement in a fastchanging, contemporary media arena. In addition to learning about the more traditional forms of news media such as newspapers, radio and television news, as a Griffith Journalism student you will be introduced to online and converged media throughout your degree, providing you with a broad skills set that is a priceless asset in a competitive employment environment. Griffith Journalism specialises in preparing students for employment in major mainstream news organisations, as well as in community and alternative media organisations, for non-government organisations and for the many hybrid media companies that offer a converged news service (including online, audio, televisual and visual journalism). That means as a Griffith Journalism graduate you will have greater access to a wider range of career opportunities, which we think is vital to your success. Griffith Journalism. Access all areas.

Access the Griffith Journalism internship program. A standout feature of the Griffith Journalism program is our hugely popular third year internship program, which offers more industry internships than any other university. This innovative program is offered in both first and second semesters and gives students at our Nathan and Gold Coast campuses access to internships with a wide range of industry partners in the mainstream and alternative media, as well as with key community organisations. Each year we offer more than 70 internship opportunities with industry partners, such as ABC Radio, ABC TV and ABC Online, Channels 7, 9 and 10, The Courier-Mail, Q-Weekend, Quest Newspapers, The Sunshine Coast Daily, Scene Magazine, Time Off and Amnesty International. This invaluable industry experience allows you to take the skills you have learnt throughout your degree and put them into practice in a serious workplace situation. On internship you are expected to behave as if you are an employee of your host organisation and should expect to write or produce stories that will, if good enough, be published or broadcast as part of the organisation s regular news or current affairs output. Some students do so well on internship that they are invited back by their host organisation as either freelance contributors or as paid staff. The Griffith Journalism internship program also prepares you for life as a working journalist in ways that traditional classroom-based study cannot, helping you to develop a strong portfolio of work and industry contacts along the way.

Access Griffith Journalism student feedback. Our students love our internship program. Here s what some of them had to say: I scored a full-time cadetship with the Albert and Logan News during my final semester at university. It was during a work placement organised through Griffith that I first came to Albert and Logan News and was able to make an impression. After two weeks there I was asked to leave my resume and within two months I was back, hired on a full-time basis as a cadet. Stephanie Masters. Bachelor of Journalism. Internship with Albert and Logan News, Quest Newspapers. My internship was undertaken at Scene Magazine. The staff there were incredibly helpful and supportive especially since the editor himself started there as a Griffith intern. My first day saw me interviewing an experienced hip hop artist and writing an article that got published the very next week. Over the weeks I adapted my writing to their style and wrote a number of articles that got published, making great additions to my portfolio. Although the internship is over, Scene has kept me on as a contributing writer. I am now branching out to write for other magazines. The highlight of my studies was being able to go into working news rooms and experiencing how the industry worked... I knew after completing an internship at News Queensland that it was where I wanted to work... And I was lucky enough for my goals to become reality. Kris Crane. News Ltd general reporter*. Griffith Journalism graduate. Nathan Martyn. Bachelor of Communication majoring in Journalism. Internship with Scene Magazine. * Kris Crane completed internships with The Courier-Mail and mx through the Griffith Journalism internship program before successfully applying for the News Ltd graduate program. He received one of only eight such positions available in Queensland.

Access talented teaching staff. Griffith Journalism gives students access to a team of talented staff who have a wealth of experience working for a range of mainstream, alternative and community media organisations. In addition to their industry experience, our staff members have international reputations for their research into important media areas such as community broadcasting, news media and democracy, Indigenous media, media and terrorism, and humanitarian media. Our full time staff members are complemented by a selection of industry-based professionals who work part time as tutors and lecturers, sharing with students their individual experience and first-hand advice about life as a working media professional. The combined skills of our team ensure our students develop a critical understanding of all aspects of the contemporary media industry, which prepares them for their own exciting media careers. Griffith Journalism gives you access to a broad range of industry experienced staff, teaching across radio, television, print and online journalism. Professor Stephen Stockwell. Former ABC Four Corners journalist. Griffith Journalism lecturer.
