1 Graduate Coursework in Liberal Arts Graduate Research in Interdisciplinary and Cross-Cultural Research Taught by staff across the Research School of Humanities and the Arts, including the Interdisciplinary Humanities Group, the School of Archaeology and Anthropology and the School of Art

2 Overview of Liberals Arts programs The Liberal arts program was developed by the previous Centre for Cross-Cultural Research (CCR) in Museum and Collections began in the Faculty of Arts in 2004 and moved to the CCR in 2005 (with the appointment of Kylie Message) to become the first stream in a broader Liberal Arts set of offerings. Initially developed as a collaboration with the National Museum of Australia. Streams in Cultural Environmental Heritage (with the appointment of Sally May in 2009) and Visual Cultural Research soon followed. The program is based on a hubs and spokes model. Liberal Arts now includes 5 streams (4 offered to Masters (Research level) and 1 to Graduate Certificate only) 2

15 Liberal Arts Internships Opportunities available (fieldwork, exchange, internships etc) Internships are available at national, state and international cultural institutions Internship of up to 12 units which counts towards the degree and offers an excellent way to gain work experience Internships are offered year-round, in semesters 1 and 2, and summer and winter sessions Students spend between twenty and forty days with a host institution Graduate outcomes (skills and employment opportunities) Skills Highly individualistic due to wide ranging projects carried out Employment opportunities Generally found in cultural institutions and government heritage agencies 15

17 Higher degree by research program Interdisciplinary and Cross-Cultural Research Convenor is Paul Pickering Research areas available include anthropology, digital humanities, visual anthropology, collection based research, history, indigenous studies, art history, literature, heritage and museum studies and the visual arts. Students are encouraged to adopt an interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives in their research. Examples of PhDs being undertaken Nature as Art: a comparative cross-cultural discourse on the art and aesthetics of Bonsai Imag(in)ing Australia: the construction of identity in newspaper and magazine photography, Comparative study of the inconography of prehistoric Indigenous rock art and contemporary indigenous acrylic art in the region of the Canning Stock Route, Western Australia 17

Mapping modernity: Cultural memory and the mythology of Istanbul in poetry of the Turkish Republic Explore the cultural changes that have occurred with the development of the sugar cane industry in Mackay, Queensland with a focus on Mia Mia from settlement to today To investigate the relationship between the five art print collections and the institutions of the Australian War memorial, Canberra and the Imperial War Museum, London 18
