The Institute was established at the onset of independence in 1947 to satisfy the growing need of marine engineers in India. It was founded in 1949 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET) with headquarters in Calcutta and a branch at Bombay, under Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). It was renamed as Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1995. It started with an initial intake of 60 cadets and today about 286 young and highly motivated Marine Officers are passing through her hallowed portals. 67 years since its inception, MERI is regarded as an acclaimed Institute around the world for Maritime education. Indian Maritime University, Kolkata Campus is offering two leading maritime courses, 4 years B Tech in Marine Engineering, and 2 years MBA in International Transportation and Logistics Management. Besides, IMU, Kolkata Campus also conducts various STCW courses for its own cadets and MEO Class-I Preparatory Course. Guidelines for admission by Lateral Entry into Second Year of B.Tech (Marine Engineering) Programme: Eligibility Criteria: (i) The Candidates should have Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (or) Diploma in Marine Engineering from Institution approved by AICTE with at least 60% marks (**) overall and should have completed the Diploma within the stipulated period of 3 years, (ii)the Candidates should have secured 50% marks in English in 10 th Standard or in 12 th Standard, (iii) Age Limit- 18-25 years as on 1 st Aug 2016 ( 5 years relaxation for SC/ST candidates). ** In case of SC/ST candidates there will be a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks; however it will not apply to English marks.
