Lesson Plan Course Title: Principles of Information Technology Session Title: Identifying File types, Purposes, and Extensions Lesson Duration: 4 hours Performance Objective: Upon completion of this assignment, the student will be able to identify a file type by its extension, choose an application to open the file, and identify the purpose of the application chosen. The student will be able to organize files within folders according to file type and purpose. Specific Objectives: Define application software Identify a file type by looking at its extension Identify the type of application software needed to open a given file Identify the use for a given application software Demonstrate how to create, name, organize, copy, move, and delete files and folders Preparation TEKS Correlations: 130.272 (5) The student demonstrates knowledge of the different software associated with information systems. The student is expected to (F) demonstrate understanding of file extensions and the purpose of file types across software products; (H) identify appropriate use of application software; (L) demonstrate proper file management techniques such as creating, naming, organizing, copying, moving, and deleting files. Identifying File Types, Purposes, and Extensions Test KEY Materials Needed: Copies of Notes Organizer, instruction sheets, and test Equipment Needed: Computer and projector for presentation Computers for individual student use Learner As a class, have the students organize themselves into like groupings (examples: male and female; grade levels; age). Then, have the students organize themselves into subgroups (example: main group is age, subgroups male and female). Note: the objective of this exercise is to help the students understand the need for organization and that there are several ways to organize the same information. Introduction MI Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): ASK, Have you ever gone to your computer to complete something you were working on and not been able to find where you saved it? ASK, You can t remember what you named it and you end up starting all over again? SAY, That s why it s important to establish a good folder and organizational system for your files. SAY, Have you ever opened a file and it was just a bunch of symbols? That s because you used the wrong software to open the file. Outline MI Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructor Notes: I. Students define and give examples of application software (slide 4) II. Students identify a file type by looking at its extension (slides 6-9) Instructor should use a computer and projector to display the presentation: Identifying File Types, Purposes, and Extensions. III. IV. Students identify the type of application software needed to open a given file (slide 10) Students are shown how to create, name, organize, copy, move, and delete files and folders (slides 11-15) Speaker notes are provided in the presentation to aid the instructor with the content of the slides. Hand out the Identifying Files Types, Purposes and 2

Extensions Notes Organizer, 1 per student, to aid them in note taking during your presentation. Activity #1: Also listed in guided practice below Reinforcement activity in which students identify file type and extension Hand out the Activity #1 Worksheet, 1 per student. Allow 15 minutes to complete. Review the correct answers and let students grade their own work. NOTE: Prior to this activity, create a folder containing various blank documents. Activity #2: Also listed in guided practice below V. Demonstrate how to create, name, organize, copy, move, and delete files and folders Hand out the Activity #2 instruction sheet, 1 per student. Answer key provided in lesson documents. Students will complete the review activity listed below in the Summary section. Place the students in pairs or groups of three for this activity. Application MI Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Activity #1: Students will practice by completing a worksheet identifying file extensions and types. They will also identify the file name and extension. Activity #2: Students will complete the tasks necessary to create, name, organize, rename, copy, move, and delete files and folders. They will take a snapshot of the screen, paste it into a word-processing document, and print for instructor feedback. MI Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Activity #3: In Part One, students will identify file applications, purpose, and types. In Part Two, students will open their folder location. They will create, edit, save, rename, and make copies of their files. They will take a snapshot and paste that into a wordprocessing document. They will print and submit to instructor for grading. Summary MI Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): In pairs, have students ask questions of each other from the lesson note organizers they filled out at the beginning of the lesson. Identifying File Types, Purposes, and Extensions Activity #2 1. Open the My Computer icon. 2. Navigate to the drive/folder where you save your student work. 3. Create a new folder named Your First Last Name. 4. Inside this folder, make another folder named Folder Activity. 5. Press the Print Screen button on the computer keyboard. 6. Open your word-processing software. 7. Press the paste button. a. A picture of the screen should appear on the document. b. Resize this to easily read the folder names. c. Save this to your student file as Folder Activity. d. Create a header with your first and last name. 8. Navigate to the drive/folder according to the instructor. 9. Copy the files from this folder into your Student Name folder. 10. Pick one file and create three copies of it (inside this same folder). 11. Pick a second file and create a copy of it then rename it ALL MY CLASSES. 12. Pick a third file and create a copy of it. Now delete the original file. 13. Hold down the ALT key and at the same time press the Print Screen button on the computer keyboard. 14. Navigate back to your document, and paste this screen snapshot in it. 15. Save your changes. Print one copy and submit to your instructor for grading. 13

Identifying File Types, Purposes, and Extensions Activity #3 Instruction Sheet 1. Open the My Computer icon. Navigate to the drive/folder where you save your student work. Create a new folder named Computer Class. 2. Using your word-processing software, open the Activity #3 Student Data File. 3. Save this inside the computer class folder as ACTIVITY3. 4. Open the built-in drawing software on your computer. 5. Create an image of a red circle. Click on File, Save As. Save this inside the computer class folder you just made, with the name MyDrawing. 6. Click on File, Save As, and change the Save As Type option to jpg or jpeg. Change the filename to MyCircle. Save this inside the computer class folder. Close the drawing software program. 7. Download a short video clip from a free Internet website. Save this as MyVideo to the computer class folder. NOTE: If you do not have access to the Internet or cannot otherwise produce a video, omit this step. 8. Open the music folder on your computer. Select one of the sample music files. Save this as MyMusic to the computer class folder. 9. Create copies of each file: Activity3, MyDrawing, MyCircle, MyVideo, and MyMusic. 10. Rename the originals to be YourActivity3, YourDrawing, YourCircle, YourVideo, and YourMusic, where Your is your first and last name entered without spaces. 11. Take a screen snapshot of this window (using ALT + PrtScrn). Paste the snapshot into the ACTIVITY3 document beneath the heading PART TWO. Resize and/or crop the snapshot to easily read the text. 12. Save your changes. Print one copy and submit to your instructor for grading. 14
