Getting the Most out of ATI What is ATI? ATI is an online resource that will be used throughout the nursing program to help you learn about nursing practice as well as help prepare you to take the NCLEX. You will have several assignments that must be completed in ATI, but there are so many other resources available to you to use to enhance your learning throughout the nursing program. Setting up an ATI account Follow the instructions given to you by your instructor of your first NUR course in the nursing program. You will need the Product ID for your specific cohort in order to access your resources in ATI. This Product ID will be given to you by your instructor(s). Assignments in ATI The majority of your assignments from ATI are located in the Tutorials section. You will be assigned a specific tutorial to complete, such Vital Signs. You will take a pretest to see your base of knowledge, then work through the tutorial which is a series of videos and interactive readings and then you will take a post test. Most of classes will require that you print a copy of your transcript from ATI in order to be able to enter the lab. Plan to spend at least minutes in most of the tutorials. You will get more detail about this process in your individual courses. Added ATI Resources Utilize ATI Plan-Getting Started with ATI o The first time you log in to ATI you should plan to spend about an hour in the system getting oriented to the site. A great place to start is under the Tutorials section. Look for the tutorial titled ATI Plan Getting Started with ATI. This walks you through how to use the program. Utilize the Nurse Logic Tutorial o This tutorial gives you practice with learning how to answer NCLEX style test questions which are very different from the style of questions you have had in other classes. It teaches you how to read a question, make clinical judgments, use nursing concepts to answer questions, and set priorities. This is a very valuable tool to prepare you for nursing testing format! Utilize Learning System RN Tutorial o This is a series of Practice Tests based upon content area. This is a great tool to use as you are studying for a specific content area for an exam. It has a great feature in the upper right and corner of the screen titled hint. If you click on this hint button it will show you the key words in the question (highlighted in blue). Also, anything highlighted in red is a term that you can click on to get the definition. This is really important for you to learn about picking out key words because this is a necessary step in answering the question correctly. You should ask yourself what are the key words in this question then click on the hint button to see if you picked out the key words correctly. You can also click on the Critical Thinking Guide which will give you some tips about how to read the question for what it is asking and how to pick out the correct answer. Once you have selected the answer(s) you will be able to see the rationale for the correct answer as well as a rationale for why the other answer options are incorrect. Click on the puzzle piece icon next to each answer option to access this information. It is vital that you understand the rationale behind the correct answer(s) as well as the incorrect answer options.
Utilize Remediation Templates o These templates are great study tools as you work through the program. Click on the Integration Resources section of the ATI Home page and then scroll down until you see Remediation Templates. Click on the plus sign (+) next to the templates for a list of all of the available templates. o The Systems Disorder template is a great one to use when you are learning about caring for a client with a specific disease process. It is an interactive PDF document that you can enter your own data into and then print out to use as a study tool. The act of creating this document is where most of your learning will take place. (HINT: Make sure to save the blank pdf document before you start typing into it and then use save as to save your completed document) o The Medication template is an excellent tool for your Pharmacology course. You will focus on the nursing care for a patient taking a certain type of medication. This really helps you take all of the information from your Pharmacology course and make it real to a client situation. Review your transcripts after an ATI Proctored Assessment o You will learn more about this in your classes. Once you have completed the assessments you will be able to access a report about how you performed in the exam. It will provide you with information about key concept areas that were missed. You must go back and review those content areas in order to succeed in future classes. If you do not reach a specific competency level on an exam this will be required, but even if you reach the baseline competency, you should still review the areas you missed to give you an idea of where you need to further study.
General Study Tips Give your full attention when studying focus on application of the concepts NOT memorization Don t cram for a test study on a regular basis throughout the week Organize your study materials by concepts Use mnemonic devices a rhyme, song, picture, etc. Take a concept read about it, write about it, then stand up and explain it Build connections link what you re learning to something you already know Visualize the information make pictures or charts with different colors Teach concepts to your study groups Spend extra time on difficult concepts and try to look at these concepts in many different ways Change up your study routine to prevent boredom
Study Tips Based on Learning Styles Visual Learners ~ learn through seeing & picturing words or images in one s mind Tips To Enhance Learning During Class ~Sit at the front of the class You can see the body language & facial expressions of the instructor Clear line of site to the instructor & any visual aids used Lessens visual distractions in your line of sight ~Take detailed notes during class to help in later study ~Take notes in a colorful outline format or flowchart & draw maps/diagrams of all concepts to go beyond memorization to true comprehension and application Tips to Enhance Learning During Study Times ~Create colorful outlines for all important concepts ~Draw maps, diagrams, and/or pictures to represent key concepts Easier for visual learner to understand Learn connections while creating the pictures and diagrams so learning is taking place that is vital for nursing practice (all about connections) ~Study in a quiet area where focus can be on the words and pictures ~Underline, highlight, or circle in different colors when doing readings ~Watch videos to give another type of mental image of procedures ~Color code your notes ~Create your own illustrations to remember important material ~Develop visual metaphors to associate relevant content ~Write out explanations in your own words to explain difficult concepts (color code to help in making connections)
Study Tips Based on Learning Styles Auditory Learners ~ learn through talking & listening Tips To Enhance Learning During Class ~Record classes to listen to them again later ~Write your thought responses during lectures & discussion into your notes ~Ask a lot of questions during class ~Participate in class discussions Tips to Enhance Learning During Study Times ~Listen to the recorded classes Allows you to hear intonation of instructor s voice during key concepts Listening again reinforces learning ~Read text and notes out loud ~Record yourself reading your notes out loud and then listen to it again, write down your thoughts, and then read those out loud ~Develop word association to remember key information ~Explain concepts and connections out loud with eyes closed (if you tape this you can listen to it again later to reinforce learning) ~Avoid auditory distractions while studying focus in on your voice and what is being studied ~Develop songs, rhymes, or chants to go with important information ~Join a study group! (This is of the greatest benefit to auditory learners) Opportunity to hear others explain the concepts and make connections Opportunity to speak and explain these concepts to others which helps your learning ~Write out order of priorities in sentence format and then read it out loud
Study Tips Based on Learning Styles Kinesthetic Learners ~ learn through moving, doing, & touching Tips For Enhancing Learning During Class ~Sit near the front to avoid distractions ~Take notes in written word and picture format ~Write how you will apply the information received in class ~Record lectures and listen to them again while exercising ~Actively participate in discussions (even stand and use gestures and body language to explain points during discussions) Tips For Enhancing Learning During Study Times ~Study in short periods to avoid getting distracted ~Study in groups where you can role-play and act out what is being learned ~Make up rhymes and chants to help remember key concepts ~Use memory games and flashcards to learn knowledge concepts and then develop a model with the flashcards that shows the connections ~Trace pictures, diagrams, charts, etc with finger/pencil to solidify understanding of concepts ~Use computer programs, ATI, and textbook resources to reinforce concepts via touch and action on computer ~Listen to music while studying to allow body to move with the rhythm while learning new concepts ~Study in a comfortable position (this may be lying on the floor, sitting outside, standing, etc) ~Review material while exercising ~Hold book in your hands while reading it rather than setting it on the desk ~Take notes while reading/studying to put an action with the concepts
Tips for using the Angel Classroom 1. Every time you log-in to Angel check the announcements for the course. This is a great place to get any updated information about the course. 2. Go to the Classroom Tab then click Syllabus to review the syllabus for the course. a. Important Fact about Nursing Classes: A module number does not necessarily refer to a week number. You may cover module 5 in the second week of classes so your module 5 assignments would then actually be due in week 2. The best place to check for actual due dates is in the course calendar posted by each individual instructor. 3. Review the course calendar (This is usually located in a special folder that the instructor creates for the course or it can be found under the classroom tab. Your instructor will direct you to the location of the calendar for his/her individual course.) 4. Go to the Classroom Tab then Canyon Connect tab. Here you will find all of your reading assignments. The courses are web-enhanced so reading assignments may consist of journal articles, websites, videos, discussion boards, interactive media, etc. 5. Most classes will also have a Questions for Instructor forum. This is the best place to post general questions because everyone in the class can see the instructor s responses. You should be checking this forum regularly as you may find the answers to your questions here without ever having to the instructor. 6. Check all of your addresses at least once every 24 hours. You will have a my.gcu.edu address and an in the Angel classroom. You are expected to check both of these at least once every 24 hours. 7. Save EVERYTHING before you submit it into Angel and DOUBLECHECK that the document was actually submitted! 8. Utilize your resources in the Student Success Center a. From the Angel classroom you just click on the Student Success Center tab b. Click on The Writing Center tab for information about APA formatting (NOTE: All nursing classes require use of the 6th edition of APA formatting) i. Scroll down to the APA 6th edition style resources and you will find links for: the style guide, a template for putting your paper into APA format, and a PowerPoint to help you learn about citations and references in 6th edition APA formatting. c. Click on Support Services (you will need to be on the Student Success Center homepage again) i. Access support services for the library, technical support, and tutoring services 9. Utilize your resources in the Library a. From the Angel classroom you just click on the Library tab. i. Click the link to view the full library site. On the left column you will see a list of resources. Click on the Tutorials link (it is under the help section) ii. Scroll down to Tutorials and click on the link for Library Walk Through. This will guide you through how to use the GCU library.
