SBAS is providing improved accuracy wrt GPS being widely available in real time SBAS is providing accuracy to the meter level in stand-alone mode without a need of Differential-GPS or RTK techniques in real time. Open Service and EDAS are the suitable EGNOS services for mapping and surveying

SBAS is highly suitable for mapping Mapping is the use of GNSS to plot maps/charts containing locations of PoIs. For many mapping applications, meter level accuracy given by SBAS is enough. The use of GPS for similar or lower accuracy levels requires additional infrastructure increasing substantially the costs (e.g., equipment, SW, services) All mapping applications demanding meter level accuracy can benefit from SBAS: o thematic mapping for small and medium municipalities, o forestry and park management, o surveying of utility infrastructures.

SBAS is also usable for surveying Surveying seeks to maximise the accuracy of measurements and signal availability in harsh environment. SBAS alone cannot currently reach the centimetre range of accuracy needed. But SBAS can optimize survey operations and provides a fruitful co-existence with other land measurement technologies, such as laser scanners and photogrammetric cameras. Surveying challenges: In Europe, the use of EGNOS for Surveying will be complemented with Galileo to provide benefits for more demanding applications and cope with cm level accuracy range need High productivity requirements Limited line of sight visibility Multipath in urban canyons Operations in Northern latitudes Expensive highly sophisticated equipment

SBAS enablers in Europe SBAS is an effective option for a wide range of mapping applications where meter accuracy is adequate. EGNOS is widely accesible: covers the majority of Europe, with no white spots. EGNOS does not require installation of hardware. Most new GNSS devices are EGNOS-enabled. Keeping costs on effective level EGNOS permits real time positioning. EGNOS corrections, thanks to EDAS, can also be received by terrestrial COMM means, such as internet or cellular networks. EGNOS provides system integrity, supplying information on the reliability of GPS signals. EGNOS is immune to SV error/failure EGNOS is able to co exist with other land measurement technologies

Table of Contents EGNOS added value Enablers of the use of EGNOS Current use of EGNOS

EGNOS is being used Most of the devices in Europe used for mapping are SBAS-enabled. There were 190,000 shipments of GNSS receivers in 2014. One third in Europe (55,000) 83 % of these are SBAS-enabled: 158,000 EGNOS is gaining grounds for main users: utilities and municipalities GIS applications Measuring for farm registers and field boundary measuring Forestry measuring Street furniture measuring Asset management (EDAS) The emergence of new GNSS constellations and multiple frequencies along with decreasing device prices will 1. open up the SBAS market of Mapping and Surveying. 2. allow increased user performances based on SBAS

EGNOS is gaining grounds for main users: farmers, utilities and municipalities

Cadastral is the largest application of GNSS in surveying Cadastral surveying involves the physical delineation of property boundaries in parcels and the determination of dimensions, areas and certain rights associated with properties. Is performed to: o Land taxes are frequently paid according to this determination of parcels. o subdivide parcels, o re-establish physical boundaries, o facilitate the transfer of the property title in accordance with the national land laws. The GNSS-based cadastral surveying market is expected to experience major growth and develop much faster out of Europe or North America due to o a higher level of construction activity. o there are no alternative legacy systems and dense geodetic ground networks to support surveys.
