4 The Challenge Railway infrastructure assets are subjected to varying rates of deterioration & change from the frequency & tonnages of above rail operations, adverse weather events, preventative & corrective maintenance activities. 4

5 The Challenge A result of a continuously changing asset there is a very large challenge to ensure the infrastructure is planned & maintained to an optimal condition The key is ensuring the accuracy of asset data is maintained 5

6 The Solution Aurizon Network is currently developing a Network Asset Management System (NAMS) to assist in managing the Central Queensland Coal Network (CQCN) that it owns and manages. 6

8 Before NAMS Aurizon Network inherited many legacy systems that maintained asset data These include multiple spreadsheets & databases that are business unit & region specific Based on the core disciplines of Track & Civil, Signalling, Traction Power & Telecommunications Very difficult to get access to information across disciplines & regions End result - a fragmented approach with multiple sources of truth 8

9 NAMS Project Overview Commenced February 2013 PFS & Feasibility Key enabler of Asset Management Improvement Program (AMIP) Intent is to transform business processes, systems & people to enable asset management & asset maintenance to further mature Includes the deployment of SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system for managing track & civil assets which includes a mobile solution 9

17 Master Data Management Changes to asset data - trigger alterations to a range of ancillary documents, diagrams & systems, commonly referenced in MDM The quality of asset data can deterioration quickly if changes from maintenance & renewal activities are not recorded in the system Leads to a lack of confidence in the system & alternatives being developed A well-defined MDM strategy includes: processes, roles & requirements, governance, monitoring & reporting, to ensure ongoing data integrity is sustained 17

18 Asset Data Collection First Approach Consolidated all asset data & cleansed the information Manual survey of the Newlands System (213km) to assess the practical aspects of verifying the consolidated asset information Manual survey was time consuming & introduced an unacceptable degree of safety risk to personnel Second Approach Undertook an assessment of technologies available to address asset validation e.g. aerial surveys & video based methods 18

19 Asset Data Collection Solution provided by a UK based company called Omnicom Engineering Limited OmniSurveyor3D was chosen as it has a successful record of being used to update other rail system asset registers and underlying track databases (e.g. the entire UK Railway Network) Other factors included cost, availability & ease of use 19

23 Survey of CQCN Four HD camera array, laser and positioning system fitted to the roof of the vehicle Data logging equipment and generator fitted to the flat bed of the vehicle Positioning system combines 6 axis inertial measurement unit with dual frequency Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) capturing data up to 2000Hz and post processed with GNSS base station data enabling OmniSurveyor3D to produce very accurate track centre line data even in areas of poor GNSS coverage 23

24 Survey of CQCN A comparison between OmniSurveyor3D data and independent quality control points differ by an average of 20cm in X and Y and 5cm in Z The laser scanner is synchronised with the digital images and enables the creation of an accurate point cloud of the network that can help with clearance assessments and provide measurement accuracies of ± 1mm The laser scanner has a range of 119m and rotates up to 12,000 rpm capturing million pixels per second and has a resolution of 0.1mm The laser data and digital imagery are linked, giving the user additional context when viewing the point cloud data 24

25 Survey of CQCN The files created from the processed data are assigned with the route/track definition making them compatible with the network being mapped Spatial data is attributed to client specific network definitions Survey of the Aurizon Network infrastructure was completed in 48 days Generated approximately 40 terabytes of raw data Final delivery of 24 terabytes of data both images and laser 25

26 Putting the Data to Use Asset Capture OmniSurveyor3D gives users the ability to extract accurate location information of an asset and enables accurate and quick collection of asset data without having to go on or near the track. 26

27 Putting the Data to Use Measurements Users can take measurements of any feature visible in the camera views and across multiple camera views. Measurements can be taken of the direct distance between points but also the width or height of an asset. 27

28 Putting the Data to Use Navigation Users can easily and intuitively navigate to a location using distance, height profile, market posts and assets. Signal Sighting Users can assess signal sighting placement based on distance/time to signal depending on line speed. Data Overlay Users can overlay third party data, such as rack geometry, that has a geographic location or linear location in the imagery. 28

29 Putting the Data to Use Object Placement Users can place virtual objects from an extensive3d model library, for constructability assessments, safety briefings and stakeholder management. 29

30 Putting the Data to Use Data Management Users can save objects and measurements to a database that can be exported in an open format that can be used by industry GIS or CAD software such as MicroStation, AutoCad, ArchInfo, MapInfo and Google Maps. 30

31 Putting the Data to Use Laser Data Users can undertake automatic clearance assessments using the laser tool, extract clearance profiles and take measurements to a tolerance of ± 0.1mm between objects. The data can also be used to create a 3D model of the entire network 31

33 The One Source of Truth The use of the OmniSurveyor3D tool sets enables improved safety, reduces site visits and reduces costs. The centralised database will enable more effective planning and more efficient use of asset knowledge. 33
