Key Ideas and Details Reading Standards for All Text Types K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details within all types of text, including informational and religious text to discover the Truth. EXAMPLES: Stories from the Bible (REL K.1, REL K.2, i.e., Creation Story Gen 1:1-2:4; Gen 2:6-25) including stories about Mary, Jesus and St. Nicholas (REL K.1, REL K.5). K.2 With prompting and support, retell familiar stories within the Bible and religious texts (RELK.1, RELK.2, i.e., Noah s Ark Gen 9:13) identify the main topic and retell key details within informational and religious text, including stories about Mary, Jesus, St. Nicholas and other saints (REL K.1). K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings and major events in a story. EXAMPLES: Stories in the Bible (RELK.1, RELK.2, i.e., God s Promise to Abraham Gen 22:8, 13-14) describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas or pieces of information within informational and religious texts. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas K.6 With prompting and support, name the author and illustrator of a story or text and define the role of each in telling the story or presenting the ideas or information. Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity K.9 With prompting and support, compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar literature and Bible stories. Identify basic similarities in and differences between two informational and religious texts on the same topic (EXAMPLES: in illustrations, descriptions, or procedures; REL K.1 and REL K.5 picture book of lives of Saints, Mary and Jesus). K.10 Actively and respectfully engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding. 1

Print Concepts Reading Standards: Foundation Skills K.1 Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. EXAMPLES: using the Bible, religious texts and prayers locate the basic features. (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.6). K.1a Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page. K.1b Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters. K.1c Understand that words are separated by spaces in print. K.1d Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. Phonological Awareness K.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds (phonemes), including the readings and homily at Mass, and the recitation of the Angel of God prayer (REL K.7). K.2a Recognize and produce rhyming words. K.2b Count, pronounce, blend and segment syllables in spoken words. K.2c Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words. K.2d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.* (This does not include CVS ending with -l, -r, or -x.) K.2e Add or substitute individual sounds (phonemes) in simple, one-syllable words to make new words. Phonics and Word Recognition K.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words, found in all text, including Bible stories, religious text and prayers (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.6). K.3a Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondence by producing the primary or most frequent sounds for each consonant. K.3b Associate the long and short sounds with common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels. K.3c Read common high-frequency words by sight (EXAMPLES: the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does). K.3d Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ. Fluency K.4 Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding. (EXAMPLE: Using a children's Bible or other appropriate religious text). 2

Text Types and Purposes Writing Standards K.1 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which the writer tells a reader the topic or the name of the book about which he/she is writing and state an opinion or preference about the topic, book or Bible story (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.6 i.e., My favorite book is, My favorite Bible story is, My favorite saint is ). K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which the writer names his or her topic supplies some information about the topic, including the life of Jesus and the lives of the saints (REL K.1 - i.e., write three facts and draw a picture of St. Nicholas; REL K.3 timeline of religious events in own lives). K.3 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, including Bible stories and the lives of the saints, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred and provide a reaction to what happened. (REL K.1 life of Mary, Jesus or the Saints; REL K.2 the Creation story; REL K.6 the Birth of Jesus, Luke 18:15-17). Production and Distribution of Writing K.5 With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed using Bible stories and stories of the saints. (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.6). K.6 With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers using Bible stories and stories of the saints. (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.6). Research to Build and Present Knowledge K.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects. EXAMPLE: explore a number of books about a favorite saint or by a favorite author, and express opinions about them. K.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. EXAMPLES: an experience at Mass, (baptism, wedding, funeral, weekly Mass) a Bible story or a life of a saint (REL K.6 Jesus with the children Luke 18:15-17). Range of Writing 3

Speaking and Listening Standards Comprehension & Collaboration K.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts (using Bible stories, stories about angels, the lives of the saints, personal experiences being Catholic) with peers and adults in small and larger groups. (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.3, REL K.5, REL K.6, REL K.7). K.1a Follow Virtuous Behavior Formation expectations for discussions (EXAMPLE: listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion). K.1b While being respectful and remembering that everyone is a child of God, continue a conversation through multiple exchanges. K.2 Confirm understanding of a text read aloud (EXAMPLE: Bible stories, prayers) or information presented orally at Mass or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood. (REL K.2, REL K.5, REL K.6) K.3 Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood. Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas K.4 Describe familiar people (EXAMPLES: priest, deacon, religious), places (EXAMPLES: school, church, adoration chapel, prayer corner) things, (EXAMPLES: rosary, Bible, sacramental) and events (EXAMPLES: baptism, wedding, funeral, Mass, holy day or feast day activities) and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail. K.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional details about Bible stories or the life of Jesus and the lives of the saints (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.6, REL K.7). K.6 Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly. 4

Conventions of Standard English Language Standards K.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. All of the skills (L.K.1a-1f) can be applied within the practice and teaching of any Bible stories, lives of saints, Mass readings or universal prayers of the Church (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.5, REL K.6, REL K.7). K.1a Print upper- and lowercase letters. K.1b Use frequently occurring nouns and verbs. K.1c Form regular plural nouns orally by adding -s or -es (EXAMPLES: dog, dogs; wish, wishes). K.1d Understand and use question words (interrogatives) (EXAMPLES: who, what, where, when, why, how). K.1e Use the most frequently occurring prepositions (EXAMPLES: to, from, in, out, on, off, for, of, by, with). K.1f Produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities. K.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. All of the skills (L.K.2a-2d) can be applied within the practice and teaching of any Bible stories, lives of saints, Mass readings and universal prayers of the Church (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.5, REL K.6, REL K.7). K.2a Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I. K.2b Recognize and name end punctuation. K.2c Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds (phonemes). K.2d Spell simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships. Knowledge of Language K.3 (Begins in grade 2) Vocabulary Acquisition and Use K.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on kindergarten reading and content. All of the skills (L.K.4a-4b) can be applied within the practice and teaching of any Bible stories, lives of saints, Mass readings and universal prayers of the Church (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.5, REL K.6, REL K.7). K.4a Identify new meanings for familiar words and apply them accurately (EXAMPLE: knowing duck is a bird and learning the verb to duck). K.4b Use the most frequently occurring inflections and affixes (EXAMPLES: -ed, -s, re-, un-, pre-, -ful, -less) as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word. K.5 With guidance and support from adults, explore word relationships and nuances in word meanings. All of the skills (L.K.5a-5d) can be applied within the practice and teaching of any Bible stories, lives of saints, Mass readings and universal prayers of the Church (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.4, REL K.5, REL K.6, REL K.7). K.5a Sort common objects into categories (EXAMPLES: shapes, foods, items found in a Church) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent. K.5b Demonstrate understanding of frequently occurring verbs and adjectives by relating them to their opposites (antonyms). K.5c Identify real-life connections between words and their use (EXAMPLES: note places at school that are colorful, people participating in the Mass). K.5d Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs describing the same general action (EXAMPLES: walk, march, strut, prance) by acting out the meanings. K.6 Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, responding to texts (EXAMPLES: Bible stories and the lives of saints), and participation in Mass (REL K.1, REL K.2, REL K.5, REL K.6, REL K.7). 5
